Shane Lowry makes a bit of a dog's dinner of the 17th.
The Irishman misses the green with his iron at the par five and then hits a wild chip from a spot near the spectators which skims across the green.
His fourth shot leaves him a tricky putt of around 11 feet which he misses by a couple of inches.
Cue a bit of cursing before he taps in.

Incredible! Sam Burns finds himself in the greenside bunker on the tough 18th but he's only gone and holed it for a 62!
This is just amazing - that's just the third ever 62 recorded in the Open Championship - they've all come at Royal Birkdale and two have come inside about half an hour from each other.

The wind has really picked up out there and it perplexes Rory McIlroy at the par-four 16th. In prime position just 158 yards out, he comes up woefully short with his second.
He'll take two putts from way downtown and he gives it a decent run, but makes the tiddler coming back.
Xander Schauffele's second took a wicked bounce off the mound and scampers away from the green but his short-game work is tidy and he remains bogey-free today.
Matt Fitzpatrick can only make a four so he probably needs to finish eagle-birdie to keep his hopes of making the weekend alive.

Oh no! Patrick Reed misses a tiddler on the 18th to cap a pretty miserable finish to a round that promised so much earlier on.
He's finished with three fives, which means two bogeys either side of what should be a birdie hole on the par-five 17th, so he'll go on and be possibly the grumpiest player ever to sign for a round of 66.
As Reed turned in 30, just two shots worse off than Lucas Herbert, and after two quick birdies after the turn he was sat on six under for his round and could easily have been on for a 64 at worst and possibly a 62/63 with the par fives to play.
However, a scrappy finish cost him the chance of something special, but he'll have to try and remember that at two under he's not out of the contest just yet.

Amid all that excitement over Lucas Herbert, we need to check back in on Bob MacIntyre and Alex Fitzpatrick.
They've just got through the eighth and nothing's changed scoring wise.
MacIntyre currently one over for his round and yet to really get going today.

After back-to-back bogeys Collin Morikawa manages to stop the rot from setting in as he edges closer to the finish at Royal Birkdale.
The American birdies has an eagle chance from 13th at the 17th hole but seems fairly happy with a birdie to go back to four under.
Meanwhile, Nicolai Hojgaard's cause looked forlorn at four over heading into the final two holes, but all of sudden an eagle leaves him with a chance of making the cut.

Not to be for Cameron Young who has a long birdie try on 16 but again he can't send it home. This is kind of a nearly group, as Ludvig Aberg, despite back-to-back birdies earlier, has not found too much on the greens despite hitting plenty of good looking efforts.

Incredible scenes around the 18th green a short while ago.
Not many of these spectators would have arrived at Birkdale expecting to follow Lucas Herbert.
But word spread quickly and they queued for a glimpse of history.
The Australian looked understandably frustrated after finishing with a bogey, but it did little to dampen the reception.
Plenty of young fans were waiting for an autograph from the man who had lit up the course.

Rory McIlroy chuckles with disgust at his effort at the par-three 15th. It misses the green left, but he chips up to five feet and keeps his nerve to save par and maintain momentum.
He needs a couple of late birdies though. Speaking of, Matt Fitzpatrick is heading for an early exit after making par.
Three holes left and currently four shots outside the cut mark.

Oh no!! Lucas Herbert can’t believe it. Neither can Birkdale given its groan.
Herbert stoops over with his hands on his knees. Then he averts his gaze away from the hole. He can’t bear to look at it.
After holding his pose for what feels like an eternity, he stands tall and hugs his caddie Nick Pugh.
Despite the obvious disappointment, they seem to quickly take stock of the bigger picture - which is very rosy indeed.

Huge drama on the 18th as Lucas Herbert just misses out on becoming the first man to shoot 61 at a major by a few centimetres.
His five-foot par putt slides by for a first dropped shot of the day.
It's not the score he would have wanted but Herbert emulates Branden Grace, who became the first man to shoot 62 at a men's major championship at Birkdale in 2017.
Three others have done it since but Herbert came so close to besting them all.

We've all been rightly focusing on Lucas Herbert, but Sam Burns has been quietly ripping up Royal Birkdale as well and after a seventh birdie of the day he's now seven under for his round and has the chance to quickly emulate Herbert just minutes later.
Burns is on for a 63, but a birdie on the last would see Burns follow Herbert and also equal the men's major record with a 62.
It's not too likely as the 18th is the hardest hole on the course today, but you never know....
