It was a great round of golf from Rory McIlroy. I think he'll be frustrated as he'll feel he left a few shots out there.
The driving performance was majestic so his score should have been lower. He hasn't hit it close enough or holed enough putts.
But it's solid, it's moving up the leaderboard, it's creating momentum and it's got him into red figures.

In the last major Sam Burns was brought to his knees as he came up just inches short of possibly a play-off or even winning the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
He ended up finishing second, one shot behind winner Wyndham Clark, but had two glorious chances on the final two holes - missing two putts by a combined nine inches.
As one of the best putters on the PGA Tour he probably should've made the one on 17 from inside 10 feet, and while his 16-footer on the last was tough, he missed by just four inches.
As he dragged himself to his feet he was fighting back the tears as he trudged off knowing he'd come up just short of a first men's major title. But can that hurt fire him on to a quick redemption story at Birkdale?

Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau have to play their second shots at the first from the wispy first cut of rough. They both find the heart of the green with outside chances for birdie.
Tyrrell Hatton, from the fairway, also finds the green but he's about 20 feet from the hole. His birdie attempt is on line but pulls up about three inches short of the cup.
Pars to start for this three-ball.

I dont know what's been missing this week for Matt Fitzpatrick. He just doesn't look like he's been on it.
A few too many loose shots, too many mistakes and it's just thrown him.

The 18th is one of the toughest holes you'll find on the entire Open Championship rota, but we've seen several players peppering the pin with their second shots over the past hour or so.
Xander Schauffele follows suit. After that six on 17, he produces a sparkling approach to set up a closing birdie. And he makes it to finish level - it certainly looks as though he'll keep his major cut streak alive.
Rory McIlroy hit a horrible pull with his second but dazzles with the wedge, bunting his third on to the green. It rolls a couple of feet past the cup and he tidies up for par.
Much better from the Masters champion today, with just one bogey. But considering we've seen a couple of 62s, he may be disappointed that he didn't make a more substantial move.
Matt Fitzpatrick cards a second successive 72 and he will miss the cut, which nobody saw coming given his outstanding form this year. A week to forget for the 2022 US Open champion.

Here we go then, Tommy Fleetwood tees off in his second round - he wasn't pleased with how he played yesterday but more than pleased with shooting 69. That was probably the very best he could score.
Jon Rahm was in the opposite camp as he played nicely but missed a few putts so should've been a couple better at least.
2017 Open champion at Birkdale Jordan Spieth needs some serious improvement.

Steady stuff on the front nine from Im Sung-jae.
A birdie try on the ninth from 18 feet doesn't drop but he has made one birdie to go alongside eight pars to go out in 33.
Playing partner Dan Brown is out in a one-over 35, that double bogey on the seventh hole a big blemish on his scorecard.

A triumph for perseverance in this group as Cameron Young and Ludvig Aberg had no real luck on the greens but they've kept plugging away and finish with very handy rounds.
Young kept on going until the end and made birdies in the last two holes to shoot 67 and finish on six under, which currently is good enough for second place.
Aberg played brilliantly in general with seven nbirdies in his round of 66 that ghets him right into contention - but if a few more putts had dropped he could well have been another one challenging that 62 mark!
US Open champion Wyndham Clark finished like a train but it's all a bit too late to make the cut.

Just the four birdies across 11 holes for Bob MacIntyre, Alex Fitzpatrick and Rickie Fowler as the trio pocket another bunch of pars.
They all had outside opportunities at that hole, but ultimately stay as they were.
Slightly stuck in neutral at the moment.

Unfortunately for leader Lucas Herbert, his incredible round of golf only counts for a quarter of his quest to become the sixth Australian to win a Claret Jug.

Sam Burns has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after his record-equalling round of 62: "I didn't know 62 was the record! Got off to a really nice start. Hit it close on 10, made a nice putt on 11 to get the round going, then capped it off with three at the last.
"I started the day three over par and thought if I could get to maybe one or two under that would be a pretty good spot. I had a couple of things go my way at the end, and here we are."

Best round - not trumpet blowing, but my old local course at Rutland had a winter Stableford, which had to be off winter tees and greens. Our fourball came in with 50,47,45 and 41 points. I was off 18 that day - my 50 got me cut to 13!

Among many, many things, the beauty of the first two days of the Open Championship is you get full value for your money throughout the entire day.
We've had Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele out early, and a couple of record 62s thrown in there for good measure in a pulsating morning.
And now we've got Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau coming out in the afternoon wave.
Oh, and there's still Tommy Fleetwood to come! How can you not love this?

Hmmm, after that visit to the bushes, Xander Schauffele stutters to an untidy bogey six at the 17th and moves outside the cut line. A bad time to make his first bogey of the day.
Although, with the wind picking up, +1 may well make it in for the final two rounds.
Rory McIlroy is on the move as soon as he hits his birdie putt. Misses low left and it's just a par. He just hasn't had his best stuff on the greens this week.
Matt Fitzpatrick makes a birdie but at +3 he may be too far back even with a birdie at the last.

Scottie Scheffler was happy enough with his round of 68 yesterday, although it could have been a couple of shots better.
Still, that 68 is the lowest score a defending Open champion has managed in the first round since 2016 - when Zach Johnson shot 67.
That's now five straight rounds under 70 for the world number one, who shot four rounds in the 60s at Portrush on his way to victory, leaving him just two behind the record of seven set by Ernie Els in 1993-94.

Bryson DeChambeau has missed all three major cuts this year, and four from his past five - but his one made was at last year's Open at Portrush.
The Open has long been the major he has performed worst at, but after a poor start he played three fine rounds at Portrush so his 67 at Birkdale yesterday was his fourth straight sub-70 round in this championship.
And amazingly, those four rounds of 65-68-64-67 would equal Henrik Stenson's record for the lowest winning score in Open history! Could Bryson conquer the links this weekend?

A fairly solid round from Shane Lowry despite a bit of meltdown on the 17th.
He finishes with a birdie at the 18th to go back to three under for the tournament.
The Irishman is among the chasing pack.

'Strategic' Bryson bites backpublished at 15:01 BST 17 July

If you remember, Sir Nick Faldo said Bryson DeChambeau had "zero strategy" for links golf in a pre-Open podcast - and we now know the American very much heard that criticism.
The two-time US Open champion missed all three major cuts this year, but played beautifully on Thursday at Royal Birkdale.
He spoke to the R&A after his first round and you get the feeling Faldo was forefront in his mind.
"I think you've got to be a lot more strategic out on the golf course," said DeChambeau. "I feel like I did a really good job today of being incredibly strategic and focused super hard on placing it in the right places.
"Besides 18, I placed the ball in some good areas. I just need to hit more fairways. Other than that, I feel like my strategy was nice today."

An important putt rolled in from 22 feet by Aaron Rai at the 18th as he shoots a round of 71.
He finishes with a bogey, but it could have been a whole lot worse.
That could be the difference between making the cut or not for the PGA champion from Wolverhampton.
