    Rahm +6, Gotterup +1, Aberg +2 (1)

Jon Rahm powers his drive 300 yards down the left side of the second fairway and will have a shot to the green on this downhill par-five hole.

Both Ludvig Aberg and Chris Gotterup leak their efforts out right and into a cavernous fairway bunker.

    Rahm +6, Gotterup +1, Aberg +2 (1)

Oh, a great scrambling par by Jon Rahm on the first. He stiffs a 32-yard chip to kick-in range.

And Ludvig Aberg is also safely down for four with a solid two-putt from 42 feet.

But Chris Gotterup pays for the errant tee shot, and marks a five on his card.

This is what makes Augusta National so brilliant - the range of scoring available throughout the course is so volatile.

We had 11 eagles yesterday with three of the par fives (the second in particular) coughing up plenty of shots for those playing them correctly, but also 63 double bogeys or worse with the rest of the course carrying danger everywhere.

Even by Masters standards that's some split, as it was just the second round in Masters history with 60 or more doubles and worse and at least 10 eagles - the other being the second round in 2006 (68 doubles, 11 eagles).

It's not the ideal start by Jon Rahm, who tugs his drive left and into the trees. His second shot squirts out to the front right of the green.

Chris Gotterup is also hampered by tree trunks for his second and he can only pop a low one out on to the fairway, well short of the green.

Ludvig Aberg splits the fairway and takes advantage - although he's left himself a 40-footer for birdie.

Perhaps the surprise package of round one was Jon Rahm. The 2023 Masters champion was among those expected to be in contention come Sunday but the Spaniard did not make a birdie and had his worst ever round at Augusta National. The 2023 champion hasn't missed a cut in nine previous appearances. Work to be done.

His Ryder Cup team-mate Ludvig Aberg was three under after six holes but those shots all disappeared on the ninth and 10th holes. A double bogey on the par-five 13th has left him seven back. The Swede was second on his debut in 2024 and seventh last year.

Chris Gotterup is making his Masters debut. Four birdies and four bogeys in round one was a solid start for the American who has won twice on the PGA Tour this year.

If any storyline is going to come close to the romance of Rory McIlroy's win last year, it would be 45-year-old Justin Rose finally securing a Green Jacket and becoming the second oldest winner in Masters history.

Rose was a shot behind McIlroy and Burns before dropping back after successive bogeys on 17 and 18.

Nevertheless, the Englishman focused on the clear positives after finishing inside the top 10 after the opening day for the 10th time in his career.

"I look at the big picture. It was a good round of golf on a day which was challenging. Small margins but overall a good start to the tournament and I can build on it," Rose said.

It's not quite the same as my usual golf warm-up of a coffee and bacon roll before hitting about five putts on the practice green and getting going (usually slicing the pants of it on the first tee).

But yesterday Aaron Rai hit just 14 balls on the range at Augusta National, out of a total of 6117 and still managed to card a one-under round of 71.

And he's doing pretty well today as well with a birdie on the second moving him to two under for the tournament.

Bryson DeChambeau hit the most yesterday with 241 and shot 76 - go figure! He was probably tired...

Wolverhampton's Aaron Rai tees off in his second round alongside 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia and debutant Jacob Bridgeman.

Bridgeman won at Riviera this year, which is usually a good omen for Augusta, and he's the current FedEx Cup leader - the last four Masters winners have all been leading the FedEx Cup before slipping on the Green Jacket.

He's started with a bogey today though...

Looks like a lovely day for golf at Augusta, could be good scoring conditions with just a light breeze but will depend on how fast these greens are...

  12. Hat-trick for Clarkpublished at 14:29 BST 10 April

    Clark -3 (4)

He's really got the 'wynd' in his sails now (sorry) has 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark as he's made three birdies in a row from the second to the fourth to jump up into contention at three under.

That's a great run but he's about to play two of the toughest holes on the course yesterday, the fifth and seventh, so that will be a good test as to how tough Augusta is playing today.

Would be fascinated to know what Rory would consider a good round today. He's out late, so the greens will be firm - would he take even par if you offered it to him now, or can he go lower again?

    Dominic in Wimbledon

Good question dominic and I think that going out later will help him with that as he can get an idea of how tough Augusta is playing today.

I know players say they just go out and take it a shot at a time and a hole at a time but Jack Nicklaus always had a score in mind he thought would win and he didn't do too badly...

Eight-time major champion Tom Watson had some strong words for those players who made the move to LIV but now want to return to the PGA Tour.

Brooks Koepka is already back playing and Patrick Reed is eligible in August, but two-time Masters champion Watson believes they should have received life bans for leaving the PGA Tour.

  17. Why did LIV golfers struggle?published at 14:02 BST 10 April

Bryson DeChambeau at The MastersImage source, Getty Images

None of the 10 LIV Golf players in the field managed to break par in the first round, with Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm surprisingly struggling after arriving in great form.

Rahm won for the first time since 2024 and has been a constant threat while DeChambeau won the last two LIV events back-to-back before heading to Augusta, so why the struggles?

LIV has switched from 54 to 72 holes so that should help in theory, but is the competition strong enough to battle test them for the Masters? Could the worldwide travel be a factor, or are the courses they play on too easy?

The last event was two weeks before the Masters, but plenty of other top players have had two weeks off and played well at Augusta, maybe it's because LIV players haven't played in the USA at all yet this year?

I'd have MacIntrye DQ'd from the tournament and potentially suspended for a couple years. Maybe I'm overreacting but it's every golfer's dream to play at Augusta, and it should be respected.

  20. Augusta course stats: Hole scoring averagespublished at 13:42 BST 10 April

It was a tough day at Augusta National yesterday, for most of the field anyway, with only three holes playing under par for the round.

No surprises to see that it's three of the par fives, with the second being by far the most accommodating to the Masters contenders, while the seventh was the toughest, playing almost half a shot over par.

And an interesting note on the par-five 15th which played a lot tougher than usual - in fact the hardest it has ever been in a tournament is in 1998 when it played to an average of 5.097, and on Thursday it registered 5.1209.

If that form holds that'll make closing out the tournament on Sunday even more hazardous.
