  1. Scottie struggling but Puig picks up a birdiepublished at 20:51 BST 16 May

    Scheffler -1, Puig -3 (9)

More poor putting by Scottie Scheffler on the ninth, firstly with a lag putt from 35 feet that he can only get to 12 feet, and he then misses his birdie effort to let another shot go begging.

By contrast, David Puig was off the reservation with his tee shot but found a way back to the hole then chipped on to five feet before knocking in a birdie to go one away from the leaders.

  2. Rai rises to the toppublished at 20:49 BST 16 May

    Rai -5 (11)

Outright leader. What a round of golf in Aaron Rai is having.

The Englishman rolls in his third consecutive birdie and is on fire on the greens at present.

  3. Postpublished at 20:47 BST 16 May

    Smalley -1, McNealy -4 (4)

Alex Smalley is throwing shots away like confetti in the Pennsylvania wind.

A trip into the greenside bunker on the fourth is the cause this time around. It's been a tough start for him so far with three bogeys in four holes.

  4. Gotterup gets involvedpublished at 20:46 BST 16 May

    Matsuyama -2, Gotterup -4 (6)

Chris Gotterup has gone about his business quietly but steps up on the eighth to roll in a birdie putt to join the ever growing band of leaders.

He's a great putter so it's no surprise - it's a big surprise to see how many players are tied for the lead at the US PGA Championship though.

    Currently there's six of them...

  5. 'I wasn't trying to be critical' - McIlroypublished at 20:41 BST 16 May

    McIlroy -3 (66)

Yesterday, Rory McIlroy said the bunched-up leaderboard was indicative of a "not-great set-up" at Aronimink.

Speaking to Sky Sports after carding a four-under 66 today, he expanded on those comments:

"I wasn't trying to be critical of the set-up. What I was trying to say when you have these big old golf courses that are renovated and their wide fairways and wide greens and you tuck the pins away, everyone plays the exact same way and that's why you see such a bunched leaderboard.

"Very entertaining for the people watching at home, very frustrating for us playing. You heard Scottie [Scheffler], Shane [Lowry], myself. It was a frustrating first couple of days because it felt your good shots weren't being rewarded. I think we were all frustrated coming off the course."

On his chances going into Sunday:

"We'll see what the leaders do this afternoon. The wind is up so hopefully I'm not too far away going into tomorrow. I think I learn and adapt and manage my game pretty well on the fly.

"There were a few things I didn't like in my game on Thursday but I worked on those on the range, went out yesterday and felt better and continued on with that today."

  6. Back-to-back birdies for Minpublished at 20:41 BST 16 May

    Lee -3, Greyserman -2

Australia's Min Woo Lee bounces back from two bogeys with two birdies.

The 27-year-old benefits from a couple of superb approach shots to leave himself with straightforward putts on the fifth and sixth.

Max Greyserman follows a birdie-bogey start with a few pars as he attempts to find some rhythm.

  7. Rai joins leaderspublished at 20:40 BST 16 May

    Rai -4 (10)

England's Aaron Rai does indeed tap in on the 10th. He becomes the 11th different player that has either led or shared the lead today.

  8. Postpublished at 20:39 BST 16 May

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've worked on many many majors and I can't recall a leaderboard like this at a major.

(There are currently 27 players within two shots of the lead)

  9. Bogey for Thomaspublished at 20:39 BST 16 May

    Young -1, Thomas -4 (7)

JT was going along so nicely...and then he careers his drive right off the seventh tee and punches his second out of the rough on the right to the rough on the left.

He pays for that wildness with a stroke.

  10. Great save by Matsuyamapublished at 20:38 BST 16 May

    Matsuyama -2, Gotterup -3 (4)

Hideki Matsuyama was really unlucky on the third as his wedge approach took a huge bounce off the green and arrowed into the crowd, leacing him no chance as he made bogey.

It could've been worse as Matsuyama sprayed his tee shot on the fourth and had to just chip it back to the fairway then hit the green to 25 feet.

But the former Masters champion drained the putt to make an all world par.

  11. Rahm drops backpublished at 20:34 BST 16 May

    Rahm -3 (11)

Jon Rahm hits probably his worst putt of the day to drop a shot at the 11th, but he made a bit of a mess of it all round really, hitting the rough off the tee and then also missing the green.

That came from nowhere as Rahm's been very solid so far, so he'll look to hit back right away.

  12. Bogey woes for Connerspublished at 20:33 BST 16 May

    Conners +1, Taylor -3 (16)

Corey Conners is having a bit of a meltdown on the back nine.

The Canadian had four birdies in a row on the front nine earlier.

Now he's just chalked up his fourth consecutive bogey. All that hard work down the drain in the space of a few holes.

Compatriot Nick Taylor has been a lot steadier, though, and a birdie on the 14th takes him three under.

  13. Rai in the mixpublished at 20:32 BST 16 May

    Rai -3 (9)

England's Aaron Rai reached the turn in 33 after carding four birdies on the front nine to more than compensate for a couple of bogeys.

And he now stiffs his approach into the 10th from 220 yards to give himself another close-range look at birdie. He is right in the mix.

  14. Aberg joins the party!published at 20:31 BST 16 May

    Aberg -4 (9)

And now Ludvig Aberg joins the party by getting to four under courtesy of a birdie on the par-five ninth hole.

It's some brutal hitting from the slender Swede as he smacks a driver 358 then hammers a fairway wood 259 to make the green - two putts gives him a four and a share of the lead.

  15. Schmid joins the leadpublished at 20:29 BST 16 May

    Schmid -4 (16)

Matti Schmid wields that long putter again to knock in a birdie on 16, that's his third birdie in four holes as the German moves to four under and a share of the lead.

  16. Postpublished at 20:28 BST 16 May

    Jaeger -3 (5)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Sounds

That's 23 straight pars for Stephan Jaeger. That's not a bad effort in a major.

  17. Bogey for Potgieterpublished at 20:28 BST 16 May

    Potgieter -3, Jaeger -3 (5)

Aldrich Potgieter misses a fairly straightforward putt from six feet for par on the fourth hole to drop a shot before a par on the fifth to steady the ship.

Germany's Stephan Jaegar, meanwhile, just keeps racking up par, after par, after par.

  18. Ugly miss by Schefflerpublished at 20:25 BST 16 May

    Scheffler -1, Puig -2 (8)

Oh boy, that's an ugly little putt from Scottie Scheffler as he misses from five feet with a little stab down the hill that wanders wide and the world number one makes back-to-back bogeys.

  19. Thomas motoringpublished at 20:22 BST 16 May

    Young -1, Thomas -4 (6)

Cam Young has now gone par, bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey. And his latest misstep arrives on the sixth green where he somehow manages to take three putts from inside eight feet.

JT is starting to motor, with a wedge into four feet setting up another birdie and share of the lead.

The American is at two under for the day and looking pretty good.

  20. Schauffele in contentionpublished at 20:19 BST 16 May

    Schauffele -3 (66)

Xander Schauffele rolls in a putt from four feet to end his round with a par on the 18th.

    The 32-year-old American posts a four-under round of 66.

He is one shot off the lead at the moment, and looks set to be one of those in contention in tomorrow's final round.
