His effort tracks left and 10 feet past and when he can't make the return journey is a shot gone.

Having just got a shot back Alex Smalley, drops his fourth of the day, after under clubbing and not finding the green off the tee.

Ludvig Aberg is pretty much pin high on the 13th after his tee shot on the 292-yard par four, but he makes a mess of his chip then has to hit a long-range putt and in the end needs to can a six footer just to save par.

He's got the lead, he just needs to keep doing what he's doing, finding fairways and greens. His iron play has been fantastic.

Aaron Rai stepped off the birdie train on the 12th and having failed to convert a chance on the short 13th hole which is playing well under par today this feels big.

Having shunted a long putt past the pin, the Englishman is faced with a five footer for par. The last thing he wants to do is drop a shot from here and he holds his nerve nicely to roll it in.

Two almighty blows by Jon Rahm sees him just 15 feet away from the hole on the long par-four 15th, coming in at 551 yards today.

Rahm can't make the putt though but with hitting like that he'll fancy his chances on the 16th, which is a par five but only three yards longer.

A rare birdie for Scottie Scheffler at the 11th after sticking it to nine feet with his second shot, and this time his putter managed to get the ball on target for once.

Tee-to-green it's been pretty good by Scheffler but he's made almost nothing on the greens so far. He's still in touch though.

Massive error by Ludvig Aberg who misses a putt of no more than three feet to make a bogey on the 12th.

The Swede is usually so solid and calm but that wasn't the best stroke in the world under pressure.

Nick Taylor, after a five-under round of 65, told Sky Sports: "I hit the irons better today, which is a strength of mine. I had a lot more opportunities and stayed patient throughout the day. My iron game was sharp.

"Why has nobody pulled away? It's really hard to hit it close but you manage with a lot of pars. Everyone is playing quite defensive so you're going to have a lot of two-putt pars.

"You might have to take a few more risks tomorrow to make birdies, but it's nice to be in the hunt."

Rahm would move three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam with a win this week, having also won the Masters and US Open.

Justin Thomas is in all sorts of bother down the par-five ninth as he finds the rough off the tee and then can't escape it with his second.

It means he can't reach the putting surface with his third and when he chips 11 feet past, the inevitable third bogey on the spin comes into view.

A shocking stretch for the two-time champion, who continues to slide down the leaderboard.

Stephan Jaeger's stoic run of 29 straight pars comes to an end.

The German picks up a birdie at the sixth after an 80-foot putt on the green leaves him with a simple tap in.

However, all that excitement must have gone to the 36-year-old's head as he bogeys the seventh and eighth holes.

A double bogey on the eighth, meanwhile, brings Aldrich Potgieter back down to level par.

Matti Schmid has fired himself into contention with a stunning round of 65 putting the German on four under and just one off leader Aaron Rai as things stand.

Six birdies and just one bogey for Schmid, who was low amateur at the Open Championship five years ago and has been one of the best putters in the field today with the long broomhandle flat stick he uses.

Nick Taylor churns out a patient, and bogey-free, round to leave himself a shot off the lead, as things stand.

The Canadian chips out of the sand at the last to leave himself with a slightly tricky putt for birdie from eight feet.

Gasps from the crowd after he misses before tapping in for a five-under round of 65.

For a putter like Chris Gotterup it's a huge chance gone begging on the seventh as he slides a seven footer by the side of the hole so has to settle for a par.
