Last year it was just the relief, there wasn’t that excitement you get with a tournament win, or a major win.

It was sheer and utter ‘thank god I’ve done it’ but this year knocking in that little putt, just the sheer joy on his face without that tinge of (desperation) was just so wonderful to see.

My word he’s going to enjoy this tonight.

You can see his emotions and he’s not afraid to show them either. It clearly means a lot to him, the fact that his parents are here is another massive aspect to it. Poppy’s a year older, she’ll understand it more as well and he knows how much agony he’s had at this place in the past.

It’s now obviously turned into such an extraordinary place for him. I’m not surprised he was emotional there but once again such a great ambassador. He speaks so well and captures that it all not just to him but to everybody.

Rory McIlroy speaking in Butler Cabin: "I can't believe I waited 17 years to get one Green Jacket and I get two in a row. I think all of my perseverance at this golf tournament over the years has really started to pay off.

"It was a tough weekend. I did the bulk of my work on Thursday and Friday but just so happy to hang in there and get the job done.

"It felt pretty similar to last year. I made a double early on the first hole last year and I made a double on four this year and then I played flawless golf after that, I made four birdies and no bogeys going to the last tee knowing that I had a two-shot lead and it's nice to have that two-shot cushion instead of the one like I had last year.

"I looked at the board after I made the bogey on six and I think I went back to nine under at that point and I said, 'if I can get to 14 under I think I've got a really good chance of winning this tournament.' I didn't quite get there. I got to 13 but that was good enough standing on the 18th tee."

What an extraordinary final day though.

You didn’t know where to look next because birdies were flying in left, right and centre. Then you would have an untimely bogey for someone that would just drag them down.

It was Masters magic all the way, and McIlroy magic to top it off.

  5. Rose falls short againpublished at 00:15 BST 13 April

    Rose -10 (70)

England's Justin Rose, speaking after finishing in a tie for third: "Felt like the crowd was amazing to me all week long. They pulled for me all week long. I felt their encouragement and support. At the end it kind of goes a little flat. It's more of a sympathy than anything. But it was still nonetheless very beautiful. But, yeah, another little stinger.

"I think just a chance that got away obviously. You know, I was by no means kind of free and clear and was nowhere kind of close to having the job done, but I was right in position.

"I was playing great, but just momentum shifted for me around Amen Corner."

The thing I love about him is he’s an entertainer, and that is his greatest quality.

He knows that golf’s an entertainment sport and he entertains in so many different ways.

Not just with his ability but with his body language, with his fallibility, with all the things that we all go through when we play golf, but we don’t have his genius.

The Rory rollercoaster of emotions was in full swing at Holywood Golf Club as Rory McIlroy entered the final holes of the Masters.

The small clubhouse nestled in the hills above the County Down town was packed with members cheering on their local hero.

Many were here last year when he won the tournament for the first time on a nerve-jangling Sunday night.

Some were superstitious and sat in exactly the same seat.

Martin Atkinson swears that he was "100% for a Rory victory" and a few tables over, Josh Oliver is counting on a photo finish: “Rory’s going to make it exciting, but I think he’ll get across the line."

He did indeed make it interesting but got the job done.

What a rollercoaster of a tournament from Rory McIlroy.

He seemed to be walking on water heading into the weekend as he took a record six-shot lead.

It didn't go his way on Saturday as his lead disappeared, and after a wobble in the middle of his front nine today, he responded brilliantly to fend off a star-studded cast down the stretch.

McIlroy gives it a lash out of the pinestraw.

It's a good strike but it finds the bunker at the front of the green.

He can take three from there for the win.
