Charles Leclerc's long run was actually quicker than George Russell's, when using the same medium compound tyres at the same time.

On the race runs, the picture for McLaren looked less positive - Norris was not competitive with Kimi Antonelli when both were using the soft tyres, nor Oscar Piastri with Russell on the mediums.

Although Antonelli looked quick on his race-simulation runs later in the session, it was not possible to make a direct comparison with Russell as they were running different tyre compounds.

Lewis Hamilton - second in the championship, 66 points behind Antonelli - had a difficult day.

After sitting out the first session so Ferrari junior driver Dino Beganovic could have a run, Hamilton was only ninth fastest in the second session.

Two of the drivers who failed to score points last time out in Monaco were one and two on the timesheets on Friday.

After George Russell topped the opening hour in Spain, Lando Norris, who let rookie Leonardo Fornaroli take the wheel of his McLaren in first practice, beat the Mercedes driver by 0.009 seconds in the second running.

Norris' team-mate Oscar Piastri was third, 0.057secs off the pace of the world champion, while Charles Leclerc put his Ferrari fourth.

Title leader Kimi Antonelli ended his only hour on track yesterday down in fifth place, with traffic scuppering his flying lap.

Hello, folks. The first two practice sessions in Barcelona on Friday were incident-free on track but on the reliability front, there were a few teams who struggled to get up to speed.

Luckily, there's one more dress rehearsal this morning to make any last-minute set-up tweaks before qualifying gets under way later on at 15:00 BST.

Tyre wear and tear was a talking point at the end of second practice yesterday, and the weather is set to be hot and sunny at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya again today.
