When we saw the onboards of Max in FP2 it looked like a handful, it didn't look fun to drive. The Mercedes and Ferraris looked the best balanced. We didn't see much of the McLarens but they seem quietly confident this weekend. This track seems to suit McLaren a little bit more than Monaco.

  3. Russell goes quickestpublished at 12:02 BST 13 June

Max Verstappen has put down his first time of third practice but the Dutchman is more than half a second off the pace of new leader George Russell.

The Mercedes driver has leapfrogged Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, plus team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who has slipped into second, to go top with a time of 1:16.258 on the softs.

The gap between the two Silver Arrows is 0.242 seconds.

Oscar Piastri was victorious here last year - his fifth win of the 2025 season - but the Australian, who is third on the timesheets, has just called the pit wall to say his front wing feels off, adding: "No front grip at all."

The world champion goes to the top of the timing tower on the softs with a 1:16.609.

Charles Leclerc was well and truly done with the performance of his brakes last week at his home race in Monaco, so what will Barcelona bring him? For now, the Ferrari man is second behind Norris, 0.076 seconds off the McLaren.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz, Williams team-mate Alex Albon, the two Haas boys and the Aston Martin pair - Fernando Alonso getting a loud cheer from the Spanish crowd in the grandstand named after him - have all headed out on a set of the C4 soft compound.

Albon, who is celebrating a record 96th race start for Williams in Barcelona, goes second on the board after his first hot lap. But he's pushed down the order now, as Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon have just clocked faster times.

Cadillac have two brilliant drivers to bring that car forward, they've just got to work in unison as a team. It's not just the drivers that make the difference in F1, it's everything coming together piece by piece.

Nico Hulkenberg goes to the top of the timesheets with a 1:18.477 on the medium compound, his marker 1.4 seconds quicker than Valtteri Bottas' on the soft tyre.

There are umbrellas up across the grandstands as fans try to shield from the warm sun. There isn't even any action on track to keep them occupied - everyone is back in the pits.

Hulkenberg has also bolted on the yellow C3 rubber and is just starting a quick lap now.

When the Canadian Grand Prix was cold and rainy a few weeks ago, we felt smug here in UK with our one week of good weather. But looking at the blazing sun in Barcelona this weekend, and the windy, autumnal-like conditions we've been experiencing lately, I'm jealous. Bring back that vitamin D.

Nobody else wants to come out to play just yet, so this is the perfect time to go and make a coffee/tea. The Cadillac drivers' times on the medium and soft are the only markers on the timesheets so far.

  17. Tyres overheating quite a lot - Antonellipublished at 11:32 BST 13 June

The warm Spanish sun will be a fixture for the rest of the weekend, so tyre degradation is high on the list of priorities up and down the pit lane.

Pirelli has gone one-step softer than last year, with the C2 as the hard, C3 as the medium and C4 as the soft compound.

"The tyres are overheating quite a lot," said Kimi Antonelli on Friday.

The Italian failed to get a clean time in on the softs during second practice, and he also said there is room for improvement for Mercedes this weekend.

"Just trying to find the best balance. With only one lap, it is always difficult, but overall there is still quite a bit of work to do," he said.

"But I am quite confident ahead of [Saturday]. Long run was good but looking forward to tomorrow and the changes we're going to make."

  20. McLaren are 'up there' - Norrispublished at 11:27 BST 13 June

Lando Norris arrives in Spain following retirements at both the Canadian and Monaco Grands Prix, and has a 98-point deficit to title leader Kimi Antonelli in the drivers' championship.

Barcelona has started off on a positive note for Norris and McLaren. "We're up there with the people we want to be with," he said.

Norris added there were "still a good few things to improve" before qualifying, and also highlighted the weather as a factor this weekend.

"It's hot and I don't think anyone's going to be that happy," said the reigning world champion.

"It's difficult with the wind and with the conditions but it seems to be working better than the last few weeks, which is a good sign."
