George Russell takes pole position for Sunday's race in Barcelona.

He sounded happy on the team radio, much happier than the last few weeks.

His former team-mate Lewis Hamilton has popped his car into the second spot.

And his current team-mate Kimi Antonelli is third.

Lando Norris is fourth and Max Verstappen fifth.

Kimi Antonelli takes provisional pole but for how long?

Not very long. Here comes his team-mate George Russell, who pops his car at the top of the timesheet.

There is no doubt the Mercedes has been the fastest car this season, so Kimi Antonelli has all the tools he needs - and he's in the form of his life at the moment with five wins on the bounce.

He's 66 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the championship standings and he's maximised everything so far.

He's not really been tested too much, and I'm quite excited to see into this European leg, how George Russell and Ferrari and McLaren close that gap and start putting a bit more pressure on him.

The three driver that are fastest in theory - Kimi Antonelli, George Russell and Lando Norris - are all out first, and everyone else is behind them. So you're sacrificing the theoretical best of the track conditions.

Lewis Hamilton goes across the line and jumps up into sixth, which is disappointing for him, but he would’ve taken a lot of grip, a lot of time out of his tyres, as he was near the end of completing a lap when Charles Leclerc went into the wall.

Just third for Antonelli, two tenths behind the top spot.

Here comes his team-mate George Russell and it is provisional pole for him.

Russell is 0.031 ahead of second place Oscar Piastri and Antonelli is dropped down a spot to fourth.

I imagine Kimi Antonelli would go back out on the used soft tyres because he hadn't started his push lap, he was starting his preparation lap, and he probably didn't even get through sector one.

We did see Charles Leclerc walking out to the medical car but he did report on the radio after the crash that he was OK.

Drivers are in their cars, helmets on and visors down.

They're all lined up in the pit lane and ready to go.

There are still eight and a half minutes left, so I think the drivers who were on laps will probably go out on those tyres they did a third of a lap on. They'll do a time that is sub-optimal, but at least it'll be something. Otherwise, you're leaving yourself too much at risk.

Before the red flag, Oscar Piastri took provisional pole position in the McLaren.

It was a lap time of 1:15.176 for the Australian.

Max Verstappen was a tenth behind and Leclerc was in third.

Charles Leclerc has had a massive shunt. I think it could be Turn Four, but on your push lap, on acceleration, you can get the rear [of the car] coming round, and it's quite dirty offline.

He's gone a little bit wide, snap of oversteer, can't catch it and into the wall.
