The margin was tight for Alex Albon to make it into the second part of qualifying, and team principal James Vowles tells Sky Sports on the pit wall: "We need to make a better car." Williams team-mate Carlos Sainz did make through in P15.

Such an impressive 19-year-old is Kimi Antonelli, we've had to wait so long for an Italian winner, Giancarlo Fisichella being the last one and then Kimi Antonelli comes along and wins five races in a row.

The cars are starting their final laps now, so the likes of Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon need to pull out time to make it through to Q2.

Haas' Ocon crosses the line but the Frenchman doesn't improve and stays in the bottom six. Nico Hulkenberg is on the cusp in 16th place but after his final attempt, the German jumps to 12th.

The fight for the last place in Q2 is between Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon. Who is going to get it?

It's Colapinto. Williams' Albon drops to P17 and is out.

That was not the script we were given, Max Verstappen to be quicker than the two Mercedes. However, let's not get too excited, it is only Q1.

Drivers are slowly creeping out of the pit lane with four minutes left on the clock in this opening qualifying session in Belgium.

Lando Norris is quickest, Max Verstappen is second and his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar is third.

Kimi Antonelli is down in fifth at the moment, but the Italian teenager won't be too troubled by his position on the timesheets at this stage.

Arvid Lindblad has slipped to fourth now, but that was a great lap from the Racing Bulls rookie.

Lando Norris is on a fresh set of soft tyres, like the rest of the field, and the world champion jumps above Max Verstappen by 0.065 seconds and into top spot. The second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar, who has a hefty grid penalty this weekend, is third.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is on the phone to Ferrari to update the team on the tyre preparation.

People have probably noticed Kimi Antonelli has got an advantage over George Russell so far this weekend and it is quite a complicated scenario. What is happening is that Antonelli is able to carry more speed through the high speed and medium speed corners of the middle sector without having to use his battery to fill in any gaps of power which he might get through a snap of oversteer or something. He is more comfortable with the car on the edge. He has got more battery left at the end of the lap and on top of that, he is braking later. He has got more energy to deploy at the exit of the chicane and that is how he is able to build the three and a half tenths advantage he has over Russell this weekend.

Lando Norris is on his out lap so he moves aside and lets Max Verstappen whizz by on his first flying lap. The Dutchman goes straight to the top of timesheets with a 1:45.930.

Kimi Antonelli is next to cross the line but the Italian is 0.261 seconds off the pace of Verstappen's quickest time and slots into second.

Carlos Sainz has gone fifth, which is now sixth because of Liam Lawson's fast time, in the Williams and now here comes Brit rookie Arvid Lindblad...

... second for the Racing Bulls youngster. Well done, Arvid.

Massive overtaking opportunities from La Source all the way up to Les Combes. Then when you get out of Turn 15, through Blanchimont to the Bus Stop chicane.

Sergio Perez puts the first marker on the timesheets ahead of Cadillac Valtteri Bottas. Finn Bottas gave his team-mate a nice little tow and the Mexican clocks a 1:49.307 to get us going.

Lance Stroll aborts his opening attempt on the softs and goes back to the pits.

The top teams are holding back as the clock ticks down in Q1, as just the Cadillacs of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, plus the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll, head out in track. Bottas and Perez look to be sneaking in some early slipstream practise. Can either driver book a spot in Q2 this afternoon?
