After the sprint race points have been dished out and a five-second penalty for Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, George Russell has cut the points gap to just seven.

Charles Leclerc put 12 points between himself and Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remain in fifth and sixth.

There is one driver who will not be taking part in qualifying.

Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto is out of his car and not looking particularly happy.

He was disqualified from the sprint earlier today because of 'technical non-conformity'.

His team-mate Nico Hulkenberg's car has been fixed in time and the 38-year-old has made his way out to the circuit.

Miami is a very tricky little track and it does put an emphasis on the tyres. They have to do quite a bit of work here and we saw at the end of the sprint, so that was 19 laps, even leader Lando Norris was slithering around all over the place. So the teams are going to have to think about the tyres for the race.

The lights have turned green and the clock has begun - it's a 18-minute countdown for Q1.

Track temperature is a toasty 52C as we wait for the drivers to make their way out to the circuit.

Two drivers did not get the chance to race in the sprint today. Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad retired with a technical issue before the sprint began but is set to take part in qualifying.

Audi's Nico Hulkenberg dropped out of the sprint when his engine went on fire during his out-lap. The TV cameras showed his team working hard to get his car ready in time.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc back-tracked on his radio message about Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli during the sprint race earlier today.

He said: "I was being a bit harsh, maybe, with the adrenaline inside the car. It's true that we've had our moments with Kimi in the past, and I hope this calms down a little bit going ahead.

“Especially as he’s the only Italian driver on the grid against Ferrari. I wish it was with someone else, and I really like Kimi also as a person.

“It’s just sometimes a little bit too close for comfort and not really needed. In this particular case, I was angry in the car but the comments were probably a bit too harsh.”

The five-week break has given teams a much-needed opportunity to bring upgrades to their cars.

One team that seems to be back on top are McLaren. The papaya team showed their speed with the one-two in the sprint race.

Lando Norris claimed a back-to-back Miami sprint race win, his team-mate Oscar Piastri finished in second place.

"We have to do it all over again," Norris said after the sprint.

Now, can they continue their form and qualify on the front row for tomorrow's 57-lap race? We shall find out.

Constructor leaders Mercedes are not having a great weekend in Miami so far.

Kimi Antonelli, 19, said he was "frustrated" during the sprint race and felt he "didn't drive well".

"This weekend has been more difficult, but it was expected with everyone bringing big upgrades" he added after the sprint race.

His team-mate George Russell said he struggles on the track at the Miami International Autodrome.

"The improvements from Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull are daunting," Russell added.

Formula 1 has made a series of changes to the regulations governing power-units for this weekend's race in Miami and after the sprint race, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc gave their first impressions of the technical tweaks relating to energy management.

The changes have been made with two main aims - to return qualifying to a more flat-out challenge for the drivers, and to reduce closing speeds during racing.

World champion Norris called them "a step forward", adding for the majority of the laps in sprint qualifying yesterday, drivers could push and not have to think about things like 'lift and coast'. "It felt a little bit normal and that was a nice thing," he added.

Piastri said there was a "little bit less super-clipping" in qualifying but felt there are problems still to be addressed. Leclerc agreed with the McLaren drivers, adding: "We have to have realistic expectations because we cannot change so much either." The Ferrari man did say the steps the FIA has taken for Miami "have made it better".

While Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen look for improvements in their cars for qualifying, the top three drivers from the sprint shared their views on the changes to the new regulations which have been implemented from this weekend.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton finished the sprint race in seventh. He spoke to Sky Sports before qualifying: "I'm hoping we can change a lot [for qualifying]. Yesterday, I lost three tenths just because the software wasn't working properly. I'm driving the same but losing down the straights and in the race it seemed like that continued from qualifying.

"I think they're going to have to do some software changes or something to make sure that doesn't happen going into qualifying. Hopefully we will have slightly better deployment. The set-up is in the wrong place so definitely we will make some big changes going into qualifying."

Max Verstappen spoke to Sky Sports after finishing the sprint race in fifth: "The starts were not good, after the corner I had no battery release. After that, the car didn't feel too bad. The race was alright, there's still a lot of room for improvement needed from us, the car is not where I want it to be at. It's still jumping a lot but there's just room for improvement from us."

Lando Norris took McLaren's first victory of the season with a dominant drive from pole position in the Miami Grand Prix sprint race.

The world champion was untroubled as he converted pole into a lead at the first corner and controlled the race from there.

Norris led a McLaren one-two ahead of Oscar Piastri, who fell back from Norris as the race developed and was forced to hold off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the closing laps.

Kimi Antonelli won a scrap with Mercedes team-mate George Russell for fourth on track, but was penalised for exceeding track limits too many times and given a five-second penalty.

That dropped him behind Russell and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who had earlier emerged on top after a tense battle with Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari.

McLaren have landed the first punch of the Miami weekend with a one-two finish in the second sprint of the 2026 season. The upgrades seem to be working well and world champion Lando Norris is back on the top step of the podium.

Who will be their main challengers for pole position later on? Mercedes look a little bit out of sorts following the impromptu break, however, Kimi Antonelli still put his car P2 in sprint qualifying yesterday. Ferrari, who are also carrying significant updates, will want to improve before lights out tomorrow, and Max Verstappen seemed happier with his upgraded Red Bull.
