They have been almost flawless in this calendar year. 49 points out of 54 and yet they have still fallen short.

It has been 19 years since they last finished in the top two for successive seasons so they are making undoubted progress but now it's that final step.

Fine margins this year saw them fall short, they've got to set the same high levels and standards for next season if they are to pip Manchester City.

Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva speaking to Sky Sports: "The margins are so small. Liverpool in two seasons we beat them by one point and now Arsenal by two points. We've been lucky enough to have these small margins to be in front of them. The achievement is unbelievable. Four in a row, we are so, so proud and so, so happy."

On if there was any fear after West Ham scored: "It creates a bit of doubt because you know they don't need to play very well to do some damage. The team maintained the same level, we created chances and went for the third goal and luckily we scored and won the game."

On which Premier League title is the most special: "All of them but the first one is always the most special. Winning four in a row and something that was never done before is unbelievable, right?"

On the way the team is set up: "The way this team is built, they know if everyone works very hard we are a step closer to winning. As the senior guys right now, we have to make sure that the new guys feel the same way. In this team it is not acceptable to not work and give 100% and that's what we do every game."

I just asked David Moyes if Pep Guardiola was the standard for every coach.

"I guess the thing people ask is if you gave Pep the West Ham job, could he be successful there?" he said.

"I think he could do it anywhere. I am not talking about winning the league anywhere but managing teams successfully.

"He has really good players and has received huge backing. Really he is in the perfect storm."

The worrying thing from my perspective is can anyone stop Manchester City next season?

Four in a row. Is this the greatest Premier League team that we have ever seen? Arsenal came so close. They pushed hard last season. They improved this season and came so close.

These are great moments for football players. This is the ultimate achievement to win the Premier League title - a marathon.

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We changed something at half-time, and after that we had more control. In the end the win is OK.

"We swapped our sixes from the sides, left and right, that was important. We had a lot of problems defending Joao Pedro in the first half but then we had more control and we were better on the ball. You see the goal, it was a movement in behind. The first half was too static."

On Manchester United’s worst finish in Premier League: "It is not good enough by far. Although we had less than 60 points two years ago, 58 points, eighth is the worst performance. It is the truth but we should have done better. We knows the reasons behind, everyone knows, but it is not the right moment to go into it. It’s not good enough."

On Saturday's FA Cup final: "Talking about all the things we had to suffer this season, it was good to bring players back. They worked hard, desperate to play the final games of the season and especially the final next week. We get options and hopefully we will have a g week and everyone is on board. We will put a comp team out and we will fight for the cup."

Arsenal

Arsenal's Kai Havertz, speaking to TNT Sports: "What can I say? I feel sorry for all the Arsenal fans. We gave our best but it wasn't enough.

"Maybe in two or three months we can say it was a good fight. Right now I feel like we deserve more. It wasn't enough in the end but we go again next year.

"We showed great character again, they didn't make it easy for us. They took time with every throw and every ball. In my opinion it's sometimes not fair in football but we have to accept that football is hard. Hopefully we can go again next year and give Arsenal fans what they need and what they're all here for."

On his message to the fans: "Right now I can't even think. It's just so frustrating. It's tough. I can tell them next year that we're going to be an even better team and we're going to give everything again. That's all I can say."

Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo speaking to Sky Sports: "It was an amazing goal. I had the possibilty to shoot and I did. I just wanted to try, I didn't look at my team-mates. I just wanted to shoot.

"It was a good season for us to get Europe. I am so happy to be in this team, we will achieve a lot of trophies in the next season.

"It was good to join Chelsea, one of the best teams in the world. I am sure next season will be a good one."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It summed up our season. We weren't totally secure at the back, but great credit to the players. They've done their job - now we wait and see.

"We anticipated after losing against Manchester United that our control of the [European] situation had gone. It’s never a nice situation, but whatever happens, happens.

"We have issues to solve defensively. If we can do that, next season could be another season of really strong performances. This was a season that could have been better, but a good season overall.

"We're a real united club. I think we're still moving forward, so there's a lot to be positive about."

Newcastle will be in Europe but only if Manchester City win the FA Cup final.

West Ham manager David Moyes has just been into the press conference room.

He is understandably full of praise for Pep Guardiola.

"There used to be an argument that clubs couldn't win the title back-to-back," said the Scot.

"He has blown that sky-high. Four in a row is incredible.

"Everyone in football is in awe of his coaching but there is more to it than that. He is a really good man manager and has the ability to control players. Either that or he has some hairdryer because he has got them on a string because they won't step out of place.

"His ability to manage is second to none."
