Chesterfield boss Paul Cook remonstrates with the match officialsImage source, Shutterstock

Chesterfield boss Paul Cook speaking to Sky Sports:

"I think it was always going to be like that [intense]. Probably didn't have the actual clear-cut chances in the game if truth be known.

"But it's half-time, I think a goal either way for any side, you can see by the quality of players on the pitch, that it will go into the second leg for sure.

"And we're still very much in the tie, that's for sure."

Notts County boss Martin Paterson speaking to Sky Sports:

"Tight games, pressurised games, play-offs, it's fantastic football isn't it? I thought the atmosphere was fantastic.

"It's quite strange really. It's a half-time talk this to the press. That's the first half and then we go back to Meadow Lane.

"We've got a lot of work in the meantime looking at video and making sure that we stay humble and prepare for the best Chesterfield to come into our home stadium.

"A game of two halves dare I say it and we're quietly pleased with some things but also respectful and we know the threat they carry.

"Work as normal the next couple of days."

  5. 'Chesterfield didn't make enough of possession'published at 20:13 BST 10 May

    Jobi McAnuff
Former Crystal Palace and Reading winger on Sky Sports

On seven games in the EFL play-offs without a win for Chesterfield manager Paul Cook:

I was a little bit disappointed with them in the first half from an attacking perspective. They were better second half.

I think he would have asked for a bit of a response. As much as they've had more of the ball, they got into some good areas, they weren't quite able to make enough of that possession.

That will be a little bit of a disappointment for him. Dobra going off in the first half didn't help.

There are some positives to take from the way they finished the game but clearly to lose 1-0 is not ideal.

But there is still so much to play for.

Notts County match-winner Jayden Luker speaking to Sky Sports:

"First of all, just have to thank the supporters, they egged us on the whole game. Loud, bringing a lot of numbers.

"We knew that back post areas, we could get in there, so I'm just happy to make it and score the goal.

"We've just got to go again in the second leg."

He added: "They're a good team. We're both two good teams playing together. We both play football so we just have to show our quality.

    "We go again."

I think it was a little reserved performance from Chesterfield today.

Notts County's shape out of possession was really good, it was hard to break through.

There was just nothing at the top end of the pitch, I think that penalty miss from Lee Bonis really affected him throughout the rest of the game.

There's still a game to play at Meadow Lane. The message from Paul Cook I think will be really positive - we've got to go to Meadow Lane and be on the front foot.

Great away win! Good to finally beat them - only half time though and still a lot of football left to play. Come on Notts!

Advantage Notts, and I would almost say a deserved advantage.

I think both teams could have played better if I'm honest. I think on another day there would be better chances and more chances.

Chesterfield fans were frustrated for large parts of that game, I think they had a 10-15 minute spell in the second half but I think Notts weathered it well.

I think we knew it wouldn't be decided tonight, it's job done today, but there's still a massive job to do on Friday.

That could be a vital win for Notts County in the first leg of this play-off semi-final.

The Magpies will take a one-goal lead back with them thanks to Jayden Luker's close-range effort in the first half.

Lee Bonis hit the post with a penalty in the sixth minute for Chesterfield, who huffed and puffed in the second half but couldn't find a leveller as County's defence stood firm.

Lee Ndlovu does well to be a nuisance for County and holds onto the ball and then wins his side a throw.

Chesterfield boss Paul Cook looks apoplectic on the touchline, feeling that throw should have gone his side's way.

Chesterfield try to thread it through to Will Grigg, but no joy. It runs all the way through to James Belshaw in the County goal and he can lump it upfield.

And now the visitors win a free-kick to run down the clock.

    Big four minutes, this.

Notts have just got to settle down a bit.

They're winning 1-0 so I don't want to be too critical, but had they shown a bit more composure in this game it could have been more.

Is Chesterfield's eight-game unbeaten run about to come to an end?

The Spireites last lost a game on 17 March, going down 3-0 at home to Oldham.

About three minutes plus stoppages to salvage something here.

  20. Postpublished at 86 mins

More groans as Will Grigg does well to keep it alive for Chesterfield and it comes back around to Sammy Braybrooke on the right edge of the area, but his cross is poor and floats out for a goal-kick to County.
