There has been plenty of dissection of the respective tactics of Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Manchester United counterpart Ruben Amorim given they both employ the 3-4-2-1 formation.

When Amorim was asked about in on Friday, he was adamant the systems weren't the same and no-one would claim that every 4-3-3 formation was the same.

Yet in his programme notes for today's game, Glasner says they are similar.

"We had an excellent win away against Manchester United last season but they have improved since under Ruben," said Glasner.

"It's a nice challenge against an opponent who use a similar system. I don't think they'll be many surprises and it could come down to fine margins."

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, speaking to TNT about returning to action after the midweek Conferene League defeat: "I'm feeling fine, I'm used to it now. We have been playing three-game weeks for a lot of the season. Hopefully we can bounce back."

On where Palace can hurt Man Utd: "In their box scoring hopefully. I'm not going to tell them what we are going to do, but we looked at their previous games and how they play. It might be man for man quite a bit of the match.

"Hopefully we can get the better of them. We know what we need to do to overcome that. Hopefully we can stick to the plan the gaffer has given us and I think we have a good chance of getting a result."

A West Ham statement following the news club legend Billy Bonds passed away this morning, aged 79: "An extremely private and loyal man, Billy was completely devoted to his family - wife Marilyn, who sadly passed away in 2020, daughters Claire and Katie, and grand-daughters Eloise and Elissa.

"Never one to crave the limelight, he was universally loved, respected and admired by his team-mates, players and supporters, who will forever consider themselves ‘Billy Bonds’s Claret and Blue Army’.

"The thoughts and sincere condolences of everyone at West Ham United are with Claire, Katie, Eloise and Elissa as they come to terms with their loss, and we kindly ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this sad and difficult time.

"A period of appreciation to honour Billy will be held before kick-off at today’s Premier League home fixture v Liverpool, and a full tribute will take place at our next home fixture against Aston Villa, on Sunday 14 December.

"Rest in peace Billy, our courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader."

People are complaining about the United team and squad, but that isn't Amorim's fault. Years of poor recruitment is the issue. Yes, he has made errors and should change the system but he can't just magically make new players appear.

Crystal Palace v Man Utd (12:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter at Selhurst Park

If Manchester United had won at Nottingham Forest or Tottenham, they would - briefly - have gone second. If they had beaten Everton on Monday, they would have gone fifth, or possibly fourth.

Sadly for Ruben Amorim, they did none of those things.

Today, with half a match round played, they will go sixth, or fifth, with a win.

It is crucial in that respect because the more games they don't win, the further away United get from their stated pre-season aim, which is a place in Europe.

Four games without a win would represent their worst run since April. United have had more time to prepare. This really is a key game for them.

Crystal Palace will go fourth with a victory at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

A healthy win and a significant defeat for Chelsea against Arsenal later today might even propel them into third.

These are heady days in south London.

Palace have joined Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford in establishing themselves in the Premier League with canny recruitment that seems to keep them moving forward even when their best players get picked off.

Their example is one Manchester United and Tottenham in particular would do well to follow.

Ben @ 11:20 - They are far less likely to get overrun if there is a third man there. Amorim's inflexibility and determination to stick to a flawed system, until he gets his extra £200m midfield, is exactly why we shouldn't stick with him. He should have been long gone.

Did they really test Everton that much? It is the same old thing with Ruben Amorim.

I thought we were starting to see Ruben Amorim's team and they were buying into it but then when they miss the players they brought in, it goes back to the old Manchester United.

It is hard to feel sorry for Ruben Amorim. For me, he should have piled on as many players as possible against Everton.

They have improved. But when you lose those players - Cunha is a massive part of that team - the team performs like they did last season.

Once these players aren't available, they underperform.

We need to stay patient with Amorim. He wants to build a fast and dynamic team, but he only really has Casemiro and Fernandes that he trusts in central midfield. They will get overrun regardless of the system. I hope he gets the chance to get two mobile midfielders in.
