That just about does us for what I am told was Sunday's action in the Championship. Although if you ask me, it feels like a Saturday.

We have one game tomorrow (Monday, in case you were wondering) in the second tier as Leicester face West Bromwich Albion.

Should the freezing conditions not have an effect on that game, we'll be back in just over 24 hours' time to take you through all the action.

For now though, thank you very much for joining us and stay warm tonight, folks.

  2. 'We expect to win from 2-0 up' - Jonespublished at 18:15 GMT 4 January

    FT: Blackburn 2-2 Charlton

    Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:

"Yeah, really [frustrated]. It wasn't a good game in terms of no team really had any control.

"But after taking a 2-0 lead we expect to win that game. The goal just before half time probably lifted them and poor from us.

"[They] Turn the ball over, [we] allow them to get to the byeline, clip the ball in, we don't pick it up – there's only one in the box – we have three and he gets a free header and scores. That's frustrating.

"Second goal, that one's really frustrating. We lose Miles [Leaburn], Miles has to come off. We can't make a sub, so we're down to 10 men. We have the ball in the corner, we clip it into the goalkeeper's hands. They go up the other end and score from a cutback.

"And these are stuff [sic] that we normally defend really well, these are stuff [sic] we work on.

"In the end it's like a basketball game and you're probably happy with a point at the end."

  3. Heckingbottom hails 'strong' Prestonpublished at 18:12 GMT 4 January

    FT: Bristol City 0-2 Preston

    Preston North End

Preston moved to within a point of the automatic promotion places courtesy of their win away at Bristol City.

Boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire he was pleased with a strong performance on their travels.

“[It was] a really strong away performance. Some big individual performances as well, and a good finish to these four games we’ve had in 10 days. We’ve had six days of travelling and three overnight stays so it’s big credit to all the group, the outcomes we’ve had in the games, because everyone on the pitch has been fantastic.

“Two good goals, I thought we were dangerous all game and probably the only blemish on that game was not creating more goal scoring opportunities.

“I consider Bristol [City] one of the most dangerous teams in the league for two main reasons - how they counter-press and how they counter. They’ve had the most shots on targets from counterattacks, they’ve had the second-most clear-cut chances in the league, which shows you how dangerous they are and shows you how well we defended."

  4. 'We weren't pragmatic enough'published at 18:08 GMT 4 January

    FT: Bristol City 0-2 Preston

    Bristol City

Bristol City were beaten 2-0 at home by in-form Preston North End after Lewis Dobbin and Alfie Devine found the net for the visitors.

Robins boss Gerhard Struber questioned his side's pragmatism following the defeat and told BBC Radio Bristol:

“Big frustration. My boys are really disappointed right now. Between the two boxes, we created a good game but we made it easy for them, the goals that they scored.

“These two times, we were not sharp enough to come out and clear the moments. I think we could be more pragmatic in these moments.

“In the opponents’ box, we were not ruthless or clinical enough today. It’s painful today to play against a team like Preston at home and lose.

“Preston are a really good, organised team, with great physical power, and the early goal did not help us today.”

On Sam Morsy’s debut for the club, Stuber added: “There were really good actions, really good developments in his game, exactly the picture I would have of him.”

  5. 'We knew we'd get chances'published at 18:04 GMT 4 January

    FT: Derby 1-2 Wrexham

    Wrexham

Wrexham are just a point outside the play-off places after making it four wins in a row.

Boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Wales Sport:

"The first 15, we were excellent, we had some great chances. It's exactly how we thought it would go, we had good control and they're a counter-attacking team and they've got decent pace.

"The one moment we allowed that to happen, they got back in it.

"We said to the lads at half-time that if we could play in the same manner with the same quality, we would get chances."

    • Wrexham have won each of their past four league games, as many victories as in their previous 16 Championship matches (W4 D9 L3).
    • Sorba Thomas’ goal and assist for Stoke City took his tally for goal involvements to 15 this season (9 goals, 6 assists), already his most in a Championship season, besting his 14 in 2021-22 with Huddersfield Town.
    • Since the start of last season, QPR’s Rayan Kolli is the only player to score multiple goals as a substitute in a Championship game twice, doing so against Sheffield Wednesday and in December 2024 against Norwich City.

Mark Elliott spoke with manager, Mark Robins, on the 2-0 victory against Norwich City.

Back-to-back away wins for Stoke City have taken them up to eighth place in the Championship and one point short of the play-off places.

Former Norwich forward Mark Robins is in charge of the Potters and has told BBC Radio Stoke:

"This fourth game in this period of time was incredibly tough.

"We have a squad of 20 outfield players and five are out injured and one away on international duty.

"We've got a fairly unhealthy sick list and it's really difficult for everybody but on the back of the four games a lot of players played a lot of minutes and showed incredible courage to take the ball, incredible work rate and ethic and some quality in there.

"The two goals were the epitome of that quality - we were good value for the win in the end and the bits of quality in it were worth the admission fee I would think."

  8. 'There is a lot of work to be done'published at 17:56 GMT 4 January

Norwich City remain in the Championship's relegation zone after a second successive home defeat and a ninth in total at Carrow Road this season.

Boss Philippe Clement has been speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk:

    "I expected more.

"I had the feeling at half-time we could grab the game and make the difference and give an extra push but we did not realise that on the pitch and the changes we made didn't raise our level but Stoke's did.

"In the second half they were the better team and deserved the win, I don't like saying that but it's a reality.

"I know we are by far not where we want to be and there is a lot of work to be done with making players better here and getting new players in to raise the level."

On being linked with a move for Vancouver Whitecaps winger Ali Ahmed:

"As long as somebody hasn't signed yet I cannot say much but it's true we are really close to a player and it is about the last signature and from the other club as we have an agreement with the player."

  9. 'A sense of relief' - Whittakerpublished at 17:52 GMT 4 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 4-0 Southampton

Morgan Whittaker reacts after Middlesbrough's 4-0 win over Southampton

Middlesbrough's double goalscorer Morgan Whittaker speaking to BBC Radio Tees:

"Massive, I think it's not felt too different to the last four games, we know the results haven't been there but we know we've been getting a load of shots, creating a load of chances.

"We knew if we scored first, teams will have to change against us. A sense of relief and [we knew] we can go and get more goals.

"If we get the first goal then that's massive for us, like we've shown today.

"And then starting the second half well. We've been putting one half together and not both. It's a full performance."

  10. 'Players showed belief to keep going' - Hellbergpublished at 17:48 GMT 4 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 4-0 Southampton

    Middlesbrough

    Media caption,

Kim Hellberg reacts to Middlesbrough's 4-0 win over Southampton

Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees:

"It was a well deserved win. It was a very good second half, a lot of goals and a message of belief and keep doing the things that we've done and that will give you results over time.

"You look at it and see that we haven't scored for seven hours or something like that and it goes another 45 minutes.

"But the intensity, how the players trained and worked every day at the training ground, how they are with each other and how they worked with their body language even in tough periods in terms of not getting results and the frustration of playing that type of football and not getting the wins or points from that, it shows the belief in the players in how they kept going."

  11. 'Nowhere near good enough' - Eckertpublished at 17:46 GMT 4 January

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert says their second-half performance in the 4-0 defeat at Middlesbrough was "nowhere near good enough".

    Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:

"I think the game has two parts. We can talk about the game until 55 minutes and we can talk about the part after.

"The second part is nowhere near good enough and not acceptable.

"That first goal today changed everything. I think it's a very tough decision because from what I've heard it's a clear offside situation on that ball coming in.

"We need to become more resilient. I think we can be 2-0 up today but not every game is going to go that way.

"It's two weeks until we play the next game in the league and we need to stick our heads together and find solutions for that.

"Because in the end, even in the second part of the season, there are many points to play for but we need to be more resilient."

Millwall are back in the Championship play-off places thanks to Caleb Taylor's late winning header.

The Lions are fifth and boss Alex Neil has told BBC Radio London:

"I thought we deserved it (the win) over the piece in terms of the chances in the game.

"The first half we were excellent and should have been two or three up - their goalkeeper made two or three unbelievable saves.

"But we didn't start the second half well - they just put the ball down the left channel and we didn't deal with it enough and the goal was really disappointing.

"When the game got to about 70 minutes we started to wrestle back control - their goalkeeper makes two great saves.

"There's nothing better than a late winner and the lads who came on had an influence as well."

Should Charlton back Jones?published at 17:34 GMT 4 January

    FT: Blackburn 2-2 Charlton

Controversial post as a Charlton fan this will split opinion - the board need to either back Nathan Jones now, get some bodies in or get rid of him. To let a 2-0 lead go and just sit back making changes too late again it’s getting shockingly embarrassing now

Hull City’s clash with Watford at the MKM Stadium was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off today due to "player safety concerns".

Watford said earlier they were "disappointed" the game was called off.

The Tigers say the pitch was playable and had been passed by the referee but areas immediately surrounding the playing surface were considered unsafe.

"The decision to postpone the game was agreed by all parties," Hull City said in a statement.

"Despite the continued efforts of the operations and grounds teams to clear the affected areas, conditions failed to improve, and with temperatures continuing to fall, player safety could not be guaranteed.

"We fully understand the frustration of supporters regarding the timing of the decision. Every effort was made to fulfil the fixture, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen after the 3-0 defeat away to QPR.

Sheffield Wednesday fell to a second successive 3-0 defeat as they were well beaten at Loftus Road.

The Owls' boss Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"The boys gave everything - we had a difficult start to the game where they were more dominant.

"We changed the formation after 20 minutes and got defensive control of the game - we got more people in front of the ball.

"From the beginning of the second half the boys were braver and until the 81st minute when they got the second goal it was a more even game.

"We can be very proud but of course there is still a way (to go) to create more but the second half was (a step) in the right direction.

"We had three senior players in the starting 11 but the young guys are doing more than we can expect of them."

The QPR boss chats to the BBC's Andy Giddings after 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

QPR ended a three-game winless run by eventually easing past the bottom side Sheffield Wednesday at Lofts Road.

Rs head coach Julien Stephan told BBC Radio London:

“It’s a good win. I said to the players at the end of the game that I now know exactly what it means to play four games in nine days and what it means to play over Christmas in England.

"It’s a crazy period for the players, to be honest, both physically and mentally.

“They had a good first half and were very dominant in possession and out of possession they didn’t concede any shot in the first half.

“They moved well collectively, even if the conditions were difficult to play good football they still succeeded in doing that.

“After the first half it was not so good in possession, but we didn’t concede anything and at the end they found a solution to score the second and third goals so it was a good win.”

Blues boss Chris Davies reacts after the 3-2 win against league leaders Coventry City

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies told BBC Radio WM:

“I thought we were really strong today against the league leaders. Nobody gave us a chance today and I thought the boys were fantastic.

“I think they had to show all sorts of sides to themselves. Moments of quality, good goals, run hard, battle, tackle, head, everything."

On two-goal hero Marvin Ducksch: “We know Marvin’s got the quality and I think he was really good. He enjoyed it today, he enjoyed his football today.

"He moved well and tried to combine and then a fantastic finish for his first goal. When they come over like that, you can easily go safe on those, but he went hard and it went in.”
