Everton supporters would be forgiven for wondering what they have done to deserve such cruel luck at such a pivotal point in the season.

After suffering late defeats to Liverpool and West Ham, then conceding a last‑gasp equaliser against Manchester City on Monday, the Blues have become the first Premier League side to concede a result‑altering goal in the 90th minute or later in three consecutive matches.

    Ouch.

Anthony Elanga makes his first return to the City Ground since leaving Forest for Newcastle for £55m last summer.

The winger has scored just three goals for the Magpies - none in the Premier League - and has just one top flight assist this season.

A goal to help Sweden to the World Cup in their play-off showdown with Poland in March has been his highlight this term but for the price, the former Manchester United youngster has failed to deliver for Newcastle so far.

He was never prolific for Forest, scoring 11 times in 82 games, and clearly needs to produce more to take his game to the next level.

  4. 'Pretty awful against Spurs'published at 13:39 BST 10 May

Fifth-placed Aston Villa were booed off last weekend after losing at home to struggling Tottenham.

Unai Emery had made a lot of changes with his side's Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest in mind and they were pretty awful against Spurs.

Still, even if they are poor again here, I think they will get the better of managerless Burnley.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn looks a very happy man as he arrives at Turf Moor and it's easy to see why.

The Scotland midfielder bagged a brace in Thursday's 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest to reach the final of the Europa League.

  6. Burn at left-back gives Newcastle 'security'published at 13:33 BST 10 May

Nottm Forest v Newcastle (14:00 BST)

Former Newcastle defender Olivier Bernard believes Dan Burn is the safest option at left-back for the remaining three games of the season.

Lewis Hall is considered the first-choice option under Eddie Howe, having started the majority of matches this season in that position, while Burn has also filled in when needed.

When these teams met in October, Palace were in the middle of a club record 19-match unbeaten run. Jack Grealish's 93rd-minute winner ended it and they have struggled to rediscover that momentum since.

The Eagles have lost 16 of their past 42 matches in all competitions, as balancing domestic fixtures with Conference League commitments has taken its toll. They have won only three of their 14 Premier League matches played immediately after European games.

This will be Burnley manager Michael Jackson’s 10th Premier League game in charge and his third in that time against Aston Villa, losing at home and drawing away with them at the back end of 2021-22.

It’s the first time in Premier League history a manager will face the same club three times within his first 10 games.

Crystal Palace v Everton (14:00 BST)

Expect Selhurst Park to be rocking later.

After booking their place in the Conference League final with a victory over Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this week, Crystal Palace supporters are understandably still on cloud nine.

As a result, their remaining three Premier League fixtures - against Everton, Manchester City and Brentford - are likely to be something of an afterthought for Oliver Glasner's side.

All eyes are firmly fixed on the showdown with Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig later this month.

  11. Dubravka tops the chartspublished at 13:24 BST 10 May

Burnley v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

A graphic showing the five goalkeepers with the most saves in the 2025-26 Premier League season. Martin Dubravka is top with 127, Robin Roefs 2nd with 103, Djordje Petrovic third with 101, Bart Verbruggen fourth with 99 and Dean Henderson fifth with 94

Burnley haven't had a great deal to celebrate this season as they prepare for an immediate return to the Championship.

Only bottom side Wolves have won fewer than Burnley's tally of four but there is one bright note that the Clarets can cling to.

Despite conceding a league-high 71 goals, Martin Dubravka boasts the most saves of any goalkeeper in the league - a reflection of the pressure Burnley have faced defensively.

Without Dubravka's performances, Burnley might have been threatening to take Sheffield United's unwanted record of most goals conceded in a Premier League season - 104.

  12. 'How much will Forest's Europa League loss take out of them?'published at 13:22 BST 10 May

Nottm Forest v Newcastle (14:00 BST)

A graphic showing Chris Sutton next to the words 'BBC Sport columnist Chris Sutton'

Nottingham Forest are not quite mathematically safe yet on 42 points and this weekend they play before West Ham and Tottenham do, so they will go into this game still needing something.

Forest have come a long way under Vitor Pereira and are playing really well at the moment and scoring goals, but Morgan Gibbs-White has been key to all of that so they really need him to be available after his horrific head injury.

My other worry with Forest is how much Thursday's Europa League semi-final with Aston Villa will take out of them - but at the same time I am not sure Newcastle can take advantage even if they are tired.

The Magpies' win over Brighton was much-needed for their boss Eddie Howe but it was far from convincing. All things considered, this will probably end up in a draw.

  13. Moyes already plotting for next seasonpublished at 13:20 BST 10 May

Crystal Palace v Everton (14:00 BST)

Everton manager David Moyes says the results of the next three games are unlikely to influence his plans for the summer as he is "pretty set in his mind of what he'd like to do and what we should be doing".

The Blues are one of several teams still in the hunt for European qualification as the campaign nears its conclusion.

  14. Howe relies on experienced core for bittersweet Anderson reunionpublished at 13:18 BST 10 May

If there is a club who can empathise with how Nottingham Forest are feeling, following a painful European exit, it’s Newcastle United.

Just as Vitor Pereira’s men were very much alive in the tie before suffering a heavy second-leg defeat against Aston Villa on Thursday night, so, too, were Newcastle before Barcelona inflicted a 7-2 loss at the Nou Camp in March.

Newcastle nursed a lasting hangover from that damaging night, but they finally returned to winning ways against Brighton last week.

The challenge now, of course, is to build on that result and Howe has again relied on an experienced core at the City Ground this afternoon as he prepares for a “tough game”.

The head coach will certainly need no advanced warning about the influence of Elliot Anderson, who Newcastle reluctantly sold to Nottingham Forest in 2024 to avoid a breach of profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Although Anderson has felt the clear benefit of increased game time at Nottingham Forest, Newcastle’s coaching staff always believed the academy graduate was destined for the very top and hoped he could realise his vast potential while playing for his boyhood club.

So such reunions are always bittersweet for the visitors.

As a Villa fan, Bournemouth's win yesterday concerned me slightly. Yes we are in the Europa League final as favourites but it’s football and you never know what will happen so we can’t rely on that, meaning a win today is vital to help secure Champions League!

On Thursday night, Unai Emery and his group of players solidified themselves firmly into Aston Villa history.

A jubilant 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest sees Villa into their first European final since 1982 - the year they lifted the European Cup.

It was a huge night for the club, no doubt. But it is the fans that will feel the magnitude of this victory most of all.

Ten minutes before kick off, Villa Park was vibrating. Flags, flares and flashing lights galore. It was an atmosphere that will most certainly be etched into Villa folklore. The fans felt the size of the occasion, with decades of disappointment and yearning for success manifesting into a chorus of 42,000 Villans in full voice.

From the whistle, it was a remarkable performance, with Emery's gameplan executed with precision. The introduction of Victor Lindelof into the midfield stalled Forest in the early stages, while the energy of Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emi Buendia caused problems for the weakened visitors.

Villa have had some sluggish performances this season, but this game highlighted the very best of their capability under Emery - a manager born to coach in knock-out tournaments.

A trip to Istanbul is confirmed. Flights and hotels are being booked by the thousand, with many more looking to travel than the prescribed 11,000 ticket allocation. The streets of Turkiye's largest city are set to be painted claret and blue in just over 10 days' time.

The prospect of European victory for this club cannot be understated. When owners NSWE appointed Emery three and a half years ago, the promise of a return to the top echelons of the footballing world felt a far cry from their dwindling Premier League status.

One more game and the hopes and dreams of all those affiliated with Aston Villa could be achieved. For now, it's time to celebrate this magnificent leap over the penultimate hurdle.

Vitor Pereira had already ruled out Morgan Gibbs-White, Ola Aina, Ibraham Sangare, Dan Ndoye and Murillo for this game.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, John Victor, Nicolo Savona, Willy Boly and Zach Abbott are also sidelined, leaving the head coach with few options.

Forest ran out of legs in their Europa League semi-final defeat to Aston Villa on Thursday and it is easy to see why.

Victory would send them above Newcastle on goal difference and almost seal safety, leaving them nine points clear of West Ham in 18th before the Hammers face Arsenal later.

Crystal Palace v Everton (14:00 BST)

A graphic showing Chris Sutton next to the words 'BBC Sport columnist Chris Sutton'

Crystal Palace are another team who have had Europe on their minds, and it might be difficult for them to shake off that mindset.

Everton have developed a frustrating habit of conceding costly late goals - it has happened in their past three games against Liverpool, West Ham and City - and they have lost ground in the race for sixth place.

I am expecting a different ending for David Moyes and his side on Sunday, however. This time, they will hold on for a win.

After the efforts of Thursday, I get the changes for Villa, but delighted to see Lindelof given another chance in midfield. Absolutely immense last week. This is a golden opportunity today, we need at least some of the intensity from the semi, NOT the Spurs game!
