Have Wimbledon got anything left in the tank to make for a nervy ending for Northampton? They're giving it a bit of a go.

It drops for Marcus Browne on the left side of the area and he hits it low and hard but Ross Fitzsimons can make a fairly comfortable save in the home goal.

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

Seems remarkable to think that Wimbledon were one point off top spot the last time they won a league game.

That was on 18 October against Plymouth. They're 14 points behind leaders Cardiff as things stand and five adrift of the play-off spots.

Bristol Rovers come close to taking the lead against 10-man Crewe as Kamil Conteh's low effort comes off the post. It remains 1-1.

Barrow also almost go 2-1 ahead against Cheltenham but Lewis Shipley's header goes just wide.

And Cambridge are in the driving seat as they have a 2-0 lead over Accrington.

Northampton are making their third change of the night as Tom Eaves and Sam Hoskins are replaced by Jack Burroughs and Elliot List.

The fourth official isn't the only one checking a List twice this week, of course...

AFC Wimbledon also make another sub as Antwoine Hackford comes on for Myles Hippolyte.

  7. 'Credit to Crewe's structure'published at 21:21 GMT 19 December 2025

    Crewe 1-1 Bristol Rovers

    Steve Jones
Former Crewe forward on BBC Radio Stoke

Crewe have got to realise there is strength in numbers when defending, and have to remain calm.

But Bristol Rovers are struggling to find a spare man at the moment when attacking, and you have to give credit to Crewe's structure.

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

An improvement from Wimbledon in the past couple of minutes but no real clear chances to go with it.

A seventh league game without a win is looming for the Dons.

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 76 mins

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

Wimbledon try to squeeze a ball into the box but Ross Fitzsimons is out of his goal well again to clear for Northampton.

The hosts almost launch a dangerous counter but the Dons manage to thwart the danger at the back.

Sam Hoskins has now talked himself into the book after being adjudjed to have handled the ball on the deck.

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 74 mins

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

A couple of changes for Wimbledon. Nathan Asiimwe and Omar Bugiel make way for Junior Nkeng and Matty Stevens, who is still the Dons' joint-top goalscorer this season with five despite missing the past 10 games through injury.

The return of Stevens will be a welcome sight. He bagged 17 goals in League Two last season.

Wimbledon with a fairly rare sight of the Northampton goal as they launch a ball into the box but it's comfortably claimed by Cobblers goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons.

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

"We're going to score in a minute," a pocket of the Northampton fans chant.

They won't have sung that too often so far this season. This is just the second time the Cobblers have scored three goals in a League One game so far this campaign.

    Northampton 3-1 AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon's last point away from home was in-fact a 3-3 draw at Huddersfield. They never trailed by two goals in that game, mind.

The Dons haven't got going at all in this second-half either. Northampton deservedly ahead and well on top.

    Tim Oglethorpe
    BBC Radio Northampton commentator

Wimbledon's Johnnie Jackson is on the sideline looking very thoughtful.

They are playing good football, but they are looking like they are heading for another loss.

As we know it is always difficult for newly-promoted sides in this league.

Cheltenham carve out a couple of chances at Barrow as Luke Young's effort is saved by Wyll Stanway and moments later Jordan Thomas fires wide. It remains 1-1.

Bristol Rovers are drawing 1-1 against 10-man Crewe in Steve Evans's first game in charge of Rovers who have lost 10 league games in a row before tonight.

And Sullay Kaikai's header has doubled Cambridge's lead over Accrington. The U's are up to fifth in the table as things stand.

An anecdote for you... The respective managers of these two teams tonight once played against each other in the Premier League and it's Kevin Nolan who looks to be coming out on top again.

Cast your mind back to October 2004. Northampton boss Nolan was on the winning side for Bolton as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at White Hart Lane. A Spurs side which featured Wimbledon boss Jackson that day.

Northampton are above Wimbledon in the live table and as close to the play-off spots as they are the relegation zone (five points).

    Cameron McGeehan

It's that man again and yet another set-piece has undone Wimbledon!

In almost identical fashion to Northampton's second goal, a long free-kick into the box is flicked on by Conor McCarthy for Cameron McGeehan to turn and fire home from about eight yards out.

Suspect defending once again by the Dons and Johnnie Jackson won't be happy to concede what is effectively the same goal twice.

    Northampton 2-1 AFC Wimbledon

Northampton don't seem too fussed by being a man light for a few minutes. Sam Hoskins drives down the right and tries to float in a cross but it's lacking in direction and lands on top of the net.

And now they have a free-kick inside their own half.

Northampton are momentarily playing with 10 men. Nesta Guinness-Walker has had to run to the touchline to be patched up after suffering a cut and getting blood on his shorts.
