Let's take a minute to heap praise on victors Arsenal.

They kept quiet a Man City attacking line-up that had netted 41 goals in 14 games before today, including Golden Boot leader Bunny Shaw.

A large part of that was how they dominated possession, with an 81.7% pass accuracy in the City half, pushing them right back into their own box and keeping them away from areas where they could pose a threat.

And even when the Blues broke out of the high press, Arsenal hunted in packs of two and three to win the ball back, relentless in the high press.

A superb all-round team effort to see out the victory after Olivia Smith's early goal.

  2. 'An amazing start'published at 14:13 GMT 8 February

    Everton

Everton interim boss Scott Phelan says: "It means a massive amount and in terms of the league it's important we win games. The players started to show a bit more belief in their ability and they showed they definitely have quality.

"What an amazing start. Unbelievably proud of the players and the staff that have been a part of it. The staff have helped me so much, they deserve more credit than I do, I've only had two sessions with the players so it would be wrong of me to not mention them.

"We just showed a bit more belief. We were working hard in the first half but the first choices were a bit slow, but we kept the energy and winning the ball back."

  3. 'We had to be at our best'published at 14:11 GMT 8 February

    FT: Arsenal 1-0 Man City

    Arsenal

Arsenal forward Olivia Smith speaking after the Gunners' win over Man City:

"I'm super excited and happy. We worked really hard for this. We knew we had to be at our best to win today. The atmosphere, the fans are amazing, they're our 12th player. I love to score at the Emirates.

"I'll play wherever I need to be. I was running at the back line, stretching them, runs in behind and trying to get finishes on goal.

"I am proud [of our defensive performance]. We pride ourselves on defending our box and our goal. We did really well.

"This will build our confidence and our momentum."

In the grand scheme of things Man City remain out and out favourites to win the title, but the manner of today's defeat will hurt them.

Not only did they fail to find the back of the net for the first time this season, the WSL top scorers looked blunt up top, and quite honestly devoid of ideas.

Just 0.39 xG generated, one shot on target and zero big chances created.

A stark bump of reality after they demolished Chelsea last week that's for sure.

  5. 'City will be disappointed'published at 14:01 GMT 8 February

Former England captain speaking to Sky Sports

Arsenal were dominant from start to finish, and it was a classy finish from Smith.

It won't derail City too much, but they'll be disappointed with the performance.

Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, who gets the player of the match award following a number of saves, says: "It was not pretty but we are so happy to get the three points and a clean sheet.

"In the first half we were struggling on the ball but we kept in defensively working hard and when you do the basics good things will come.

"I'm just very proud of the team and very happy to get the win."
