Aaaaand breathe. That was a rollercoaster night of Championship action. Reaction on the way...

  2. 'Better second half from Saints'published at 22:11 GMT 29 December 2025

    FT: Birmingham 1-1 Southampton

Ex-Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio Solent

The first half was boring, in the second half we had more pace and more forward running, we should be doing that from the beginning.

It looks like we were set up in a defensive way for this game. Boring is sometimes good.

It ends all square but not without controversy.

Phil Neumann's headed effort after pinball in the Southampton area put Birmingham ahead early in the second half.

Saints equalised through Cameron Archer's deft finish in the 71st minute but Blues feel Tomoki Iwata was impeded by referee Matt Donohue in the build-up and think the game should have been stopped.

Blues boss Chris Davies was sent off shortly after for throwing away the ball in anger.

Six games without a win for Birmingham. Four games without a win for Southampton.

Paik Seung-ho fires in the free-kick for Birmingham but it flies straight over the top. A waste really. That might be that.

The Birmingham reaction is ridiculous. He could easily have run around the ref, and there were 25 seconds between the bump and the ball going in. Birmingham reaction pathetic.

    Birmingham 1-1 Southampton

    Jo Tessem
Ex-Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio Solent

We're moving the ball with pace and we're getting good opportunities but we just can't quite get the ball in.

We just need one more chance, I think it's coming.

    Birmingham 1-1 Southampton

Southampton's Elias Jelert sees his attempted cross from the right well blocked by Birmingham's Liverpool loanee Lewis Koumas.

Saints are still pushing for a winner but Blues are sitting in and defending their area well. Now a free-kick for the visitors about 30 yards out though...

Leo Scienza does well on the left and floats in a cross for Saints. Kuryu Matsuki tries for the acrobatic bicycle kick finish but can't make decent contact.

A point probably doesn't do either side too many favours in the grand scheme of things.

Blues win a free-kick in a promising position on the right but the referee spots a foul in the area on a Saints player and the moment passes.

    Five minutes to play.

Injustice or not, we Saints fans will take anything right now after a miserable Christmas. We just seem to find a way to get under the opposing team's skin. Birmingham have fallen apart mentally. We have them on the ropes. Time to finish them off and continue our march upwards.

Fair play, sat here in the stands at St Andrew's and there is disbelief, the referee definitely got in the way and then compounds his error and embarrassment by throwing out cards. He knew he fluffed it and then tries to hide blushes behind cards.

The tempo has definitely gone up in the second half.

We look more alert and the changes have really brought the game alive. We're getting into the box and we're getting opportunities.

A feisty encounter and it's on a knife-edge as we enter the final 10 minutes of normal time at St Andrew's.

Is there to be any more late drama tonight?
