Mat Sadler's team often don't have much possession and win and that's exactly what they've done here.

They've done well against Gateshead today.

It's been a strong performance.

A good strike from sub Dom Telford gets a nick on the way through and flashes past the Walsall goal.

That's the closest the Heed have come to scoring this afternoon. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

What a save that was.

The lad from Walsall was favourite to score but it's a fantastic save.

The fans haven't had an awful lot to shout about today but that's something.

Kemar Roofe should have wrapped this tie up once and for all!

Incisive break from the visitors and Charlie Lakin intelligently pulls the ball back to Roofe but his side-footed effort is well kept out by Tiernan Brooks in the Gateshead goal.

Gateshead's Fenton John has a dig from distance but it is well blocked by a flying Walsall challenge.

The Heed have got to make this into more of a "Cup tie" if they are going to give themselves any chance of getting back into the game and going slightly longer might be the best way of doing just that rather than playing pretty patterns in midfield.

Kemar Roofe, just on to the field, goes for the spectacular from around 40 yards but his chip goes over the bar.

Seconds later, Gateshead give the ball away once more, and fellow sub Jamie Jellis goes within inches of grabbing a third goal for Walsall but his strike narrowly misses the near post.

Substitutions aplenty now.

Walsall make a double change and Kemar Roofe and Charlie Lakin are on for the last 17 minutes in favour of goalscorer Dan Kanu and Courtney Clarke.

As for the hosts, Alun Armstrong takes off Josh Home and Ben Williams for Tyrelle Newton and Ibrahim Bakare.

It's all gone flat for Gateshead now.

The crowd are quiet, something needs to spark.

There is a bit of a coming together and Walsall's Brandon Comley is booked for a shove after he himself was fouled on halfway.

Just a little bit of handbags, nothing else.

Courtney Clarke receives a yellow card for kicking the ball away, in the referee's eyes.

A tame shot at the other end from Fenton John dribbles into the hands of Walsall keeper Myles Roberts.

That may well have been the first save Roberts has made so far today.

Walsall have asserted their dominance more in the second half so far and are beginning to give the National League side the runaround.

Ryan Finnigan has been one of the best, if not the best today.

He's been a real driving force, especially in that first-half.

He won the penalty and has been excellent today.

Mat Sadler responds and makes a double change of his own for the visitors.

Captain Jamille Matt and Ryan Finnigan are replaced by veteran forward Albert Adomah and Jamie Jellis.

Double change for the home side.

Frank Nouble and Dom Telford are on in place of Kyle Hurst and Curtis Edwards.

Walsall so close to making it three!

Dan Kanu is slipped in down the right and fires a shot towards the near post but it is well saved by the legs of Gateshead keeper Tiernan Brooks.

From the resulting corner, Evan Weir puts a dangerous ball in, and Brooks just manages to claw the ball out on his goal-line without anyone else getting a touch to it.

The Saddlers have improved dramatically since the interval.

Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard on BBC Two: "We were excellent today. To a man, we were unbelievable.

"That is full credit to the players. Nothing other than full credit to the players.

"When they can go and play like that, we (haven't) got to fear no one.

"I like connections. I like relationships and I feel that there is a great connection with this club and community."

Jid Okeke is unable to continue for the visitors following that injury just before the second goal and he is replaced by Vincent Harper.

That's probably the most special moment I've had on a football pitch since that happened.

You can see it's a family-run club with great work ethic.

They try and do the right things all the time and this is the success they get and they deserve it.
