  2. Can anyone stop Coventry winning the Championship?published at 12:12 GMT 6 December 2025

Coventry City are in uncharted waters. And they might already be disappearing over the horizon from the Championship's chasing pack.

Never has a side been as many as 10 points clear at the top after 18 games of a Championship season (Middlesbrough did reduce that gap to seven last night but have now played a game more).

It's also 66 years since a team has scored 50 goals by this stage of a second-tier campaign, Sheffield Wednesday doing so in 1958-59.

Frank Lampard's imperious side have won 11 of their past 12 league games and are on course to break all manner of Championship records, including most points, most wins and most goals.

So, with Premier League football on the horizon for the first time since 2001, can anyone - or anything - stop the Coventry juggernaut?

Whisper it but this table is starting to take a little shape.

Middlesbrough's thumping win last night means the top two and bottom two will remain the same no matter what drama unfolds this afternoon, but there is still plenty of intrigue in a tightly-packed division.

Any one of four teams could be in the final relegation spot come 17:00 GMT while four more have realistic hopes of moving into the top six with a win this afternoon.

Every Championship Saturday is a box office occasion, will this be any different?

  4. About last night...published at 12:08 GMT 6 December 2025

    FT: Hull City 1-4 Middlesbrough

Boro have breathing space in the second automatic promotion spot this weekend, while Hull will likely lose ground in the play-off race off the back of a thumping Friday night defeat at a wet and wild MKM Stadium.

Three goals in 12 minutes before half-time ended the game as a contest, the recalled Alex Gilbert firing in from distance, Morgan Whittaker curling home another and Riley McGree poking in to make it 4-0 after David Strelec had lashed in an early opener.

Hull were sloppy in possession before the break, as ruthless as Boro were, but the Tigers improved after the interval and Joe Gelhardt won and converted a penalty after going down under the challenge of keeper Sol Brynn to reduce the arrears slightly.

Two wins from two for Kim Hellberg, though. and things are looking up for Boro.

Hull could have gone third but instead will be looking up at the play-offs from mid-table by tea-time.

  6. League One 'big hitters' meet in Cardiffpublished at 12:04 GMT 6 December 2025

    Cardiff v Huddersfield (12:30 GMT)

This meeting between League One leaders Cardiff City and eighth-placed Huddersfield Town has the potential to be a cracker – weather permitting.

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has been full of praise for the Terriers, who he describes as “big hitters” at this level.

He’s also been impressed by their style of play under Lee Grant, whose time working under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town has left its mark on his burgeoning coaching career.

Considering how attacking Cardiff have been under Barry-Murphy this season, this should be an entertaining encounter.

One possible complication might be the inclement weather in south Wales. The wind is howling and the rain is pouring here.

  7. Early League One & Two actionpublished at 12:03 GMT 6 December 2025

Thanks to round one FA Cup exits, six sides are in action further down the EFL chain.

League One leaders Cardiff host an inconsistent Huddersfield side - victory would take The Bluebirds four points clear at the top.

Plymouth are desperate for a win that would move them out of the drop zone, but they host third-placed Bradford who could end the day top.

There's just one fixture in League Two as 10th-placed Colchester host Gillingham, in eighth.

A point would take Gills into the play-off places, while three points for Colchester would do the same.

We'll keep a close eye on all the action as it unfolds.
