Harry Kane's numbers this season for Bayern Munich are ridiculous.

The England striker has already surpassed last season's numbers by some distance and it could turn into a very special season for the 32-year-old.

He starts tonight after doubts over fitness.

There had been a debate about whether Viktor Gyokeres would get a good reception on his return to Sporting.

The Arsenal forward did not report for pre-season training with Sporting as he looked to force through a move to the Gunners.

Gyokeres scored 97 goals in 102 games and won the league title during his time in Portugal.

When the players came out onto the pitch with his Arsenal team-mates, the striker was clapped by fans who are in the ground early and there were shots of some supporters showing t-shirts with his face on too.

Viktor Gyokeres was on his way to the team bus when he spotted a fan holding a sign asking for a statue to be built for him.

He could not help but smile.

"I love you all," the Sweden striker said as he left Lisbon town hall after Sporting's back-to-back Portuguese league title celebrations last May.

Almost a year on, he will be reunited with those same fans tonight as Sporting host Arsenal in the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final.

It is the first time Sporting have reached this stage of the competition in the Champions League era, but that is no accident - the club are enjoying their best spell in modern times, both on and off the pitch.

Over the past five seasons, they have been crowned Portuguese champions three times, have found peace after several years of internal turmoil and reached financial stability.

Sporting have posted a profit in their annual accounts for a fourth consecutive season, making a combined 82.3m euros over that period.

It feels ironic that the player who had the biggest impact throughout that run will now return looking to bring this fairytale to an end.

When Arsenal face Sporting tonight there will be much more riding on the game than just a knockout match in Lisbon.

For many, this is where the Gunners need to show back-to-back defeats, against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and the damaging loss to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final, will not leak into their European and Premier League campaigns.

Arsenal have been tagged as the 'nearly men' under Mikel Arteta with three successive second-placed finishes in the Premier League in the last three seasons.

But the Gunners have played a ruthless style of football this season, which has seen them establish a nine-point lead in the Premier League, reach the final of one cup competition and, depending what happens in two legs against Sporting, at least the quarter-final stage of the two other cup campaigns they began.

Their style of play has been questioned at times but now it is the team's mentality that is coming under the spotlight.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on finding way out of poor form: "It is completely true that performance and results have been very inconsistent all season.

"I think the answer lies in the history of Liverpool. In tough moments, they stand up again. We've had a lot of tough moments, stood up a few times then fallen down again.

"We have to show that mentality again to keep going and keep picking yourself up after disappointment.

"This club has also shown it can do very special things in difficult moments and if we can bring this game to Anfield, as we saw last season and many times, most recently against Galatasaray, we played the best game of our season.

"The answer is already in the history of Liverpool but it is easier said than done. We have shown two many times the face we saw for 20 minutes at Man City. Usually it is only five or 10 minutes.

"This group has shown it can come back after setbacks. Apart from the quality my team has, my team have shown many times in big games - apart from two at the Etihad - that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe."

  7. 'It's almost impossible to better than the team they were last season'published at 19:07 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on last season's tie against PSG: "The reason why I come back to that game a lot - especially at Anfield - is because in both games it was all about football. This season I have seen certain tactics used that you cannot do anything about - I'm talking about time wasting and other things in football. But that was not the case in both legs against PSG. It was just going toe-to-toe over two legs.

"Are they even better now? I said it already, it's almost impossible to better than the team they were last season becase they were already that good last season. But as I said, almost every team, maybe every team, gets better the longer they play together and I think PSG is also an example of that."

"We are at a different stage now because we made a big transition in the summer. But we are trying to go in that [direction]."

  8. Crucial run for Liverpoolpublished at 19:06 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

While trying to keep themselves in the hunt to win the trophy this season, Liverpool remain in a battle to ensure they're back in the Champions League next year.

A key home game against Fulham is sandwiched between the two legs against Paris St-Germain while a first visit to local rivals' Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium follows before the welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield.

It's direct top five rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa after that in the league so it's imperative that they find form quickly.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "I don't think so far ahead, especially when you play Paris St-Germain. They're champions of Europe - fully deserved. Kept the team together and usually, the longer you keep a team together, the better they become. If that is even possible because they were so impressive last season.

"I watched a lot of games of them and they are maybe even more impressive, there are even more rotations. They are still a very good team but details can decide a lot.

"Who takes penalties best is what decided it last season. As much as I want to believe there is no luck in the penalty shootout, Donnaruma was unbelievable in that shootout.

"I'm not looking too far ahead. A big game tomorrow then another big game against Fulham in our stadium on Saturday. Then the next one against Paris St-Germain before another big game away at Everton."

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on missing goalkeeper Alisson Becker: "We prepare for the game, if the game goes as I hope it goes, we won't need our goalkeeper. But I think PSG have scored in all their home games apart from one.

"When you play against a team as good offensively as PSG, you need a good goalkeeper. At the Etihad the first 20 minutes I didn't think we needed a goalkeeper, then after that I was hoping he would save a few."

  11. 'It is a challenge for us to be at it from the first to the last second'published at 19:01 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on whether his players can react to the defeat at Manchester City: “That is a very simple answer: the first 35 minutes. Because it’s not the first set-back we’ve had. Losing 4-0 is not the first time that there are 10–20 minutes of a game where we don’t play our best football and we immediately get punished – sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s two. This time it was four.

“The first 35 minutes give me a lot of confidence that we are able to go toe-to-toe with a team that – alongside PSG – is one of the hardest teams to play against in open play, because of their quality and the way they are managed, and we were able to do it very well for 35 minutes.

“But I can tell you, if we have the 20 minutes we had at City here, we will concede four goals. It is a challenge for us to be at it from the first to the last second. If not, it is going to be very hard again, like it was last year.”

  12. Postpublished at 18:58 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on whether PSG are heavy favourites: "I don't think it matters if there is a favourite. It's only about two games, a lot can happen in two games. Both teams have very good players, and last season showed they could go toe to toe.

"Last season I think we deserved to lose here 4-0, but that game was only thanks to Alisson that we didn't lose 4-0. At Anfield I think we deserved to win that game.

"The difference between these two teams is that PSG kept the group together. I think our team will look different to the team that was here last season."

  13. 'We have become quite experienced in negativity'published at 18:58 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "The good thing is that this year we have become quite experienced in terms of negativity because of all the setbacks we've had.

"This was a big one because it was a quarter-final, it was a big loss, it was against our rivals but, for me, it felt just as bad when we were 3-2 up at Leeds and conceded in injury time or when we were ahead at Fulham and conceded in injury time.

"I cannot name all the setbacks we had this season because if other people want to ask questions then that is not possible."

  14. Postpublished at 18:56 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on the mood in the dressing room after Virgil van Dijk's comments after losing to Manchester City: "We talked to the players in meetings but also individually, it makes complete sense, it's normal, the feeling Virgil shared after the game. It's the feeling every player, staff member, supporter had after the game, everyone at the club was disappointed after that result.

"Before you look ahead to the next game we address what we have to improve,. Everyone can see it if you look at those 20 minutes, there's a lot of things to improve.

"We cannot compare City and PSG completely - when we controlled the ball in the first 20 minutes, that had a lot to do with City playing more positional and not being so aggressive towards us. PSG under Luis Enrique do not give you a second to have the ball comfortable on your feet. It's press, press, press every second of the game."

Harry Kane's fitness was the centre of debate during Bayern Munich's media conference here at The Bernabeu last night, with coach Vincent Kompany playing his cards very close to his chest.

The good news for Bayern is their line-up has just been announced and the England captain starts after the "minor issue", believed to be an ankle problem, that kept him out of England's friendly defeat against Japan and the Bundesliga win against Freiburg.

All set for a real heavyweight Champions League clash in Madrid.

  17. 'Hopefully we can show strong reaction'published at 18:52 BST 7 April

    Paris St-Germain v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Virgil van Dijk's comments about team 'giving up' at Man City: "Sometimes in a game of football you want to do things in a certain way but are not about to for various reasons.

"But one of them can definitely be conceding goals when you think you are playing well and are in the game. Usually in football, moments that hurt you most are just before half-time and just after.

"Immediately after half-time we went 3-0 down. Then I saw five minutes where we were too open and players were struggling.

"The good thing was after 4-0 that City seemed to be happy with that and we had constant ball possession so they weren't able to create many more chances.

"I didn't see players giving up but it is good for a captain to have a strong and firm reaction after a game like that. Hopefully it is not only immediately after the game and that, as a team we can show a strong and firm reaction tomorrow evening."

  18. 'Isak won't start'published at 18:49 BST 7 April

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on the fitness of Alexander Isak: "He finished close to a week of team training sessions, he can play a part otherwise I wouldn't take him.

"I didn't take him to the Etihad because we felt he wasn't able to get a performance yet. We think we can get a performance out of him now, but not to start."

Kylian Mbappe is also back on the Champions League stage.
