Oooh, not bad from Tom Eaves!

The Northampton man loops a lovely volley towards the top right corner but Luton keeper Josh Keeley stretches high to catch it before it drops in.

It is a strange feeling because we are playing well, but as things stand we are going down because it is a draw. They know they need to win.

Luton carve themselves a good opportunity as Kasey Palmer and Nahki Wells exchange passes but the former's strike towards goal is tame to end their attack.

Northampton have a bit of confidence about them tonight, which from what we have heard about them this season, I wasn't expecting.

There's calls for Luton's Liam Walsh to shoot but instead he finds possession pinched by a man in blue.

It's then worked into Sam Hoskins for another pop at goal but he can't guide it on target.

The crowd started quiet but they are beginning to warm up now. Northampton are defending well, they are playing a good game. Pushing forward and closing players down. Some good efforts.

A long ball from the visiting keeper finds Sam Hoskins and it has Luton's defenders on the back foot.

The Northampton winger gets beyond his man but can't thwart Luton stopper Josh Keeley, who gets down low to block any potential strike.

Luton have been a bit sloppy so far. They haven't had a lot of time to prepare for this game tonight after Wembley. They do have some experienced heads out there though.

Cobblers boss Colin Calderwood did say his side haven't "given up" despite relegation fast approaching and so far they aren't acting like a team at the death.

The visitors have already put balls into the box and cut out Kasey Palmer's delivery up the other end.

They look the brighter so far.

Luton Town is a big club. They will be coming into this game so confident after the weekend. If they get on the front foot first it could be a really tough night for Northampton.

Luton make a forced double change from their previous league outing against AFC Wimbledon.

Nigel Lonwijk and Joe Johnson move into the starting line-up as Isaiah Jones and Hakeem Odoffin both miss out.

Northampton make four changes to try and keep themselves in League One.

Tom Eaves, Nesta Guinness-Walker, Tyrese Fornah and Max Dyche slot into the XI.

There's no Elliott Moore or Kyle McAdam but Terry Taylor and Jake Evans are on the bench.

"Is there a more awkward game to go into? Probably not after the weekend."

That's what Northampton Town boss Colin Calderwood told BBC Radio Northampton this week, and it's no small wonder he's got some reservations about meeting Luton Town with the Cobblers needing to win to avoid relegation.

The Hatters are the second most in-form team in the league behind the already promoted Lincoln City, winning four of their past five games, plus they also beat fellow promotion hopefuls Stockport County in the EFL Trophy final on Sunday.

But while Northampton are out of sorts and in the last-chance saloon, their fighting spirit is still alive.

"The boys certainly haven't given up, they're really applying themselves, trying to get better - small individual improvement leading into team improvement, that's what we're striving for," Calderwood said.

"It's quite interesting to watch, and doesn't surprise me, because if you take a backward step or switch off, it's a real assassination of your own personality and character - I don't see that at all."

James Tilley and Patrick Bauer return to the starting XI for AFC Wimbledon as part of their three changes.

Antwoine Hackford joins them as Marcus Browne and Sam Hutchinson both miss out.

Zack Nelson is on the bench alongside Riley Horan, who makes his debut in the matchday squad after a successful loan spell with non-league Walton & Hersham.

Stockport make five changes from their last league outing against Bolton Wanderers.

Che Gardner, Tanto Olaofe, Malik Mothersille, Roman Dixon and Tayo Edun all enter the starting line-up.

Joseph Olowu, Josh Dacres-Cogley and Lewis Bate don't make the trip but Ben Osborn and Jack Diamond are available from the bench.

AFC Wimbledon might not be the club most at risk among tonight's headliners, but it's clear they are in dire straits.

The Dons have lost their past four league games to end up just three points clear of the relegation zone, and holding on to a goal difference that puts them within striking distance of a hunting Exeter City, a place below them.

To make matters worse, tonight they host a side who have only won once in their past five attempts (L4) but who are hoping to strengthen a late bid for the final automatic promotion place.

Stockport may be fatigued from their loss to Luton in the EFL Trophy on the weekend, but Cardiff City's draw yesterday evening may find them buoyed once again.

  17. Cobblers facing relegation head onpublished at 19:27 BST 15 April

    League One table

Northampton take centre stage this evening as they look relegation straight in the face.

A draw will put them back above Port Vale but it wouldn't be enough to save them from a place in the bottom four by the end of the season.

Opponents Luton will seek to close the gap on the top six, while Stockport County can sit safely inside the play-off spaces for another weekend no matter the result.

But Stockport will still want to further the gap between them and the chasing pack. As will hosts AFC Wimbledon, who will be in danger of dropping into the relegation places next time out if they don't pick up a result tonight.
