GOAL: Watford 1-0 Birminghampublished at 15:09 GMT 1 January

    Tom Ince (9 mins)

The Hornets hit the front early on!

Tom Ince grabs his second goal of the season for Watford, volleying home superbly a terrific cross from Georgian striker Giorgi Chakvetadze who dropped deep to receive possession.

There were suggestions Ince was ahead of the last defender but the linesman keeps his flag down. The in-form hosts lead!

    Ipswich 0-0 Oxford

Ipswich forward Sindre Walle Egeli slips and fouls Oxford's Ciaron Brown who looks to be in some pain but is eventually okay to continue.

    QPR 0-0 Norwich

A long throw into the middle for QPR is well dealt with by the Norwich defence.

Norwich defender Kellen Fisher is down and looks to be winded following an aerial challenge but looks OK to continue.

    Derby 0-0 Middlesbrough

Boro have started the better as they chase a first win in four.

Callum Brittain sends in a free-kick, but Derby clear for corner with Luke Ayling waiting to pounce.

The visitors have failed to find the net in their past three outings.

Already we've got into an excellent position on the left-hand side and the right-hand side.

You could probably say we should have done better in both situations.

    Hull City 0-0 Stoke City

The home side have top scorer Oli McBurnie back in the starting XI today.

The Scotland international has 10 goals in 16 appearances.

Many of those have been set up by Ryan Giles though and he's out with a hamstring injury.

    Ellis Simms (3 mins)

What a start for the league leaders!

It's far too easy from a Charlton point of view.

Coventry wing-back Milan van Ewijk finds himself in acres of room and crosses the ball into Ellis Simms who sweeps the ball home first time with his right foot, giving Addicks keeper Thomas Kaminski no chance.

That is how to respond to a first home defeat of the season!

  9. Postpublished at 15:02 GMT 1 January

    QPR 0-0 Norwich

We are underway at Loftus Road and, interestingly, QPR boss Julien Stephan has decided to make eight changes from the starting line-up that lost at West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

Only captain Jimmy Dunne, Nicolas Madsen and Richard Kone keep their places while Paul Nardi is back in goal for the Hoops, replacing Ben Hamer who drops to the bench.

There is no captain Marlon Pack for Portsmouth in the squad today.

We have just seen a video going round on social media where the midfielder appeared to injure himself in the celebrations on Monday night's game against Charlton.

After Yang Min-hyeok knocked in a 98th minute winner, Pack was seen sprinting off before clutching at the back of his leg and then limping.

We'll make sure to bring you clarity on that after the game when we hear from John Mousinho.

    Charlton 0-0 Coventry

Charlton boss Nathan Jones has named an unchanged side from the team that suffered a last-gasp defeat at fellow strugglers Portsmouth on Monday.

Coventry head coach Frank Lampard, meanwhile, rolls the changes and there are six alterations from his starters that suffered a first home defeat of the season against Ipswich three days ago.

Central defender Bobby Thomas is available again and starts in what looks like a back three for the Sky Blues.

Table-topping Coventry City head to south London having lost their first home game of the season just before the new year to Ipswich Town.

The Sky Blues have won five of their past six away league matches in the capital, however, winning both under head coach Frank Lampard.

The Addicks, meanwhile, are coming off the back of a demoralising stoppage-time defeat to Portsmouth, in which they had equalised after the 90th minute only to concede again, and are hosting Coventry in the league for the first time since 2018.

Charlton have lost five of their past six home league games played on New Year's Day, with the exception coming when they beat Walsall 2-1 on this day in 2019.

  15. In-form Hornets host Bluespublished at 14:55 GMT 1 January

    Watford v Birmingham (15:00 GMT)

It was a terrific festive period for Watford.

Three wins on the bounce meant the Hornets sneaked into the play-off places as they host a Birmingham City side that have struggled on the road so far this season, losing eight games already in the league away from St Andrew's.

Interestingly, Watford have won each of their past six home league games against Blues without conceding a goal.

Birmingham are themselves winless in their past six league outings since beating the Hornets in the reverse fixture on the first day of last month and will be without their head coach Chris Davies on the touchline this afternoon.

Davies was shown a red card after his side conceded a controversial equalising goal to Southampton on Monday and go into today's match having not won a game on New Year's Day for 35 years, which is the longest ongoing winless streak on this day of any team in England's top four divisions.

It's been a good start to life as Swansea boss for Vitor Matos.

Four wins from his eight games in charge have lifted the Swans clear of relegation danger and another win today would propel them into the comforts of mid-table.

They have a strong recent record against visitors West Brom, with seven wins from their past 10 home league games against the 16th-placed West Midlanders.

Ryan Mason's men claimed a timely win over QPR on Monday but jointly hold an unwanted New Year's Day Football League record.

Nobody has lost more games on 1 January in EFL history than the Baggies and Preston, who have both marked the first day of a new year with a defeat on 29 separate occasions.

  17. Saints looking to bounce back in Millwall testpublished at 14:51 GMT 1 January

    Southampton v Millwall (15:00 GMT)

Southampton will be looking to bounce back to winning ways this afternoon when they host Millwall at St Mary's.

Tonda Eckert's side have now failed to register a win in any of their past four matches with two losses and two draws.

Last time out the Lions bounced back after four winless games themselves, beating Bristol City at The Den to keep them in fifth position.

Millwall have won their last two league games against Southampton and could complete a league double over the Saints for the first time since the 1977-78 campaign in the second tier.

  18. Struggling Canaries head to the capitalpublished at 14:49 GMT 1 January

QPR v Norwich City (15:00 GMT)

It was a difficult 2025 for Norwich City.

The Canaries kick off the new year second bottom in the Championship, four points from safety below Portsmouth, who also have a game in hand.

Philippe Clement's side today take a trip to west London to face Queens Park Rangers, who find themselves just three points outside the play-off places.

Norwich did beat the Hoops in the reverse fixture back in November and are aiming for back-to-back victories over today's opponents for the first time since 2018-19.

  19. Lilywhites look to end New Year hoodoopublished at 14:47 GMT 1 January

Preston v Sheff Wed (15:00 GMT)

Two draws and a defeat in their past three have stalled Preston's play-off push.

Paul Heckingbottom's men will hope to end that winless run today against the league's bottom side and with it claim victory in their first game of a calendar year for the first time since 2014!

A takeover of administration-hit Sheffield Wednesday has moved closer over the Christmas period but their threadbare squad has been hit with more injuries.

They are however unbeaten in their past two games and have won each of their past three games at the start of a calendar year so maybe this isn't a formality after all.

  20. Tractor Boys eye automatic placespublished at 14:45 GMT 1 January

    Ipswich Town v Oxford United

Put simply if Ipswich Town beat Oxford United today and Middlesbrough fail to get a win in their trip to Derby, then the Tractor Boys will move up into second position.

Boro are without a win in their past three matches and have lost twice, opening the door of opportunity for Kieran McKenna's side to pounce should they get the chance today.

Oxford are still without a permanent manager at the helm and despite losing in their last game they were able to pull off a shock on Boxing Day when they beat Southampton at the Kassam.

The U's have only won twice on the road this season and have lost seven times - interim boss Craig Short will be hoping his side can upset the odds again today.
