Due to our 23+ goal difference over Salford all Cambridge need to do is get 5 points from the last 3 games. In 2009, Bury missed out on promotion to League One by a one goal difference, and then lost in the play-offs. Essentially all goals matter.

Winners are relentless - they like the taste and don't want it to stop.

With the EFL Trophy already adorning Luton Town's Kenilworth Road boardroom there is still the chance League One play-off silverware could join it.

The Hatters are top of the division's form guide with 14 points from their past six games alongside the leaders Lincoln City.

There is a three-point gap to bridge to reach the top six, and a final day trip to Bolton Wanderers may not be ideal, but tonight's meeting with hapless Rotherham United and Saturday's home game against Barnsley offer a prime opportunity to keep the pressure on those above them.

Rotherham's season cannot come to an end soon enough. Relegation was confirmed last week, and 12 defeats since 1 January with only four wins paints a grim picture.

The Millers did upset Leyton Orient's survival hopes at the weekend but present form would suggest Luton will not be leaving in tears tonight.

  3. Can Boro fend off chasing pack?published at 19:34 BST 21 April

    Stevenage v Barnsley (19:45 BST)

Stevenage get another crack at strengthening their grip on a play-off place after conceding in added time to draw 2-2 against Lincoln on Saturday.

That result meant that Boro remain sixth in League One, but now with a two-point cushion above seventh-placed Plymouth and three above Luton Town in eighth. With a play-off place now in their hands, a win tonight is crucial to keep the chasing pack at a distance.

Mid-table Barnsley go into this on the back of two draws after Saturday's 2-2 against Yorkshire rivals Bradford City. Tonight, they'll be aiming to do the double over Stevenage after winning the reverse fixture 3-1 back in January.

The Tykes will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run on the road to six games this evening and, with head coach Conor Hourihane set to leave the club at the end of the season, they'll want to finish the season as strongly as possible.

    Stockport v Mansfield (19:45 BST)

Fifth-place Stockport County were minutes away from picking up a big win at Exeter City last time out only to concede a stoppage-time equaliser from Grecians keeper Jack Bycroft to draw 3-3.

Dave Challinor's side, who are unbeaten in their past seven league games, are currently five points clear of seventh-placed Plymouth with a game in hand over the Pilgrims. So, although in a good position, the Hatters will know that their play-off spot is yet to be secured and any slip-ups could be taken advantage of as we head for the final straight.

Mansfield go to Edgeley Park unbeaten in their past four outings, with Saturday's 2-2 draw against Luton Town confirming their place in League One next season.

With the Stags now seven points clear from safety in 15th place, they'll have their sights set on a mid-table finish with one point separating Nigel Clough's side from Barnsley, Wigan Athletic and Doncaster Rovers above them.

It has been some freefall for Tranmere Rovers, who have dropped from 17th place in January to 21st place with three games to go, and fans are still waiting for them to pull the ripcord on the emergency chute.

Their last win came on 14 February and it sticks out like a sore thumb as their only three-pointer in 19 games (W1, L16, D2).

A 2-1 defeat by Bristol Rovers continued the slide last time out and left them just a point above the relegation zone.

On the face of it, Cheltenham have little to play for with three games to go, with Steve Cotterill's side long since having secured safety despite him taking over in October with the club rock bottom.

That freedom from pressure seems to agree with them though and they are unbeaten in four coming into tonight's home game at Whaddon Road, winning their past three.

It is hard to know who has more on the line going into tonight's match, with hosts Cambridge United a point clear of fourth in the final automatic promotion spot and Grimsby Town two points off the final play-off berth.

The answer is probably that this game between third and eighth could prove pivotal to the hopes of promotion for both sides with just three games to go.

David Artell's Mariners thumped Gillingham 4-1 away from home to make it five wins from their past seven league fixtures to keep tabs on seventh-placed Chesterfield, whom they trail by two points.

Victory tonight would mean they leapfrog the Spireites into the final play-off spot.

While Cambridge have posted just one defeat in 14, and are a point ahead of fourth-placed Salford, victory tonight could give them real breathing room with two games to go.

The U's come into this flying, fresh from a 0-0 draw with the already promoted table-toppers Bromley.

"I'm massively looking forward to the next five days and what's in front of us, two really different challenges in Grimsby and Barrow [at home], but we're a hungry team with momentum," U's boss Neil Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire this week.

"We have to make sure we play with a freedom and a consistency. Individually [the players need] to be the best they can."

Bradford City v Plymouth (19:45 BST)

Fourth from bottom and 11 points short of the top six at the start of 2026, there weren't many Plymouth fans predicting a late play-off push by their team - avoiding a second successive relegation was more the order of the day.

Just four defeats from their 20 matches since the turn of the year has taken them into seventh place and suddenly those above them are sweating, including tonight's opponents Bradford City.

"We've worked all our lives to be in a situation like this, so we're privileged to be here," said Argyle boss Tom Cleverley and, but for an aberration at home to 10-man Bolton, his side are handling the pressure well.

Bradford have been on a play-off course for much of the campaign but are stumbling rather than sprinting towards that line.

Drawing with the 10 men of Barnsley means there is still work to do, and with a home game against Bolton Wanderers followed by a final-day trip to Exeter City, they are not making it easy for themselves.

    Doncaster v Lincoln (19:45 BST)

There should be quite a party in south Yorkshire tonight.

With Doncaster Rovers returning home after securing their League One status with a win at Northampton Town at the weekend there may well be a few smiling faces and mutual back slaps among their supporters.

"Our form has been great since the first of January, we've come strong again," said Rovers head coach Grant McCann with his side following last season's League Two championship with a more than respectable showing at the next level.

Meanwhile, promoted Lincoln City arrive in town knowing a win or a draw will guarantee them the title to crown a stellar season.

The best side at home, the best side away, the most goals scored and the fewest conceded - all that adds up to being champions. The only question is whether they can do it tonight, or maybe have to wait until Saturday's home game against Wycombe Wanderers?

Two wins from their final three games would guarantee Cambridge United automatic promotion, and they will be hoping the first arrives tonight when they host Grimsby Town.

The visitors can leapfrog Chesterfield into the final play-off spot with a win and keep their destiny in their own hands.

At the bottom end of the table, Tranmere Rovers are looking for only a second win in 20 games to arrest a slump that has left them just a point above the drop zone. They visit in-form Cheltenham Town, who can move into 16th place with a victory.

One measly point for Lincoln City at Doncaster Rovers tonight will crown them champions.

Defeat would mean Cardiff City can keep the title race alive by beating Port Vale tomorrow night.

Bolton Wanderers can secure a play-off spot if Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town both fail to win.
