Paris St-Germain were in pole position to take up one of the top eight spots on the final day of the league phase.

All Luis Enrique's side needed to do to qualify automatically for the last 16 was to beat Newcastle - who have struggled on the road all season.

However, after falling behind early on, Newcastle fought back before half-time and held out for a 1-1 draw. This saw the reigning champions fall to 11th in the league phase and needing to overcome a two-legged tie against Monaco to find their way to the knockouts.

  5. What will the draw for the knockouts look like?published at 19:22 GMT 17 February

Eight two-legged play-off ties will be played over the course of this week and next week and the 16 sides in action have a slight idea of who their next opponent may be in the last 16.

    • Monaco v Paris St-Germain (winners to play Barcelona or Chelsea)
    • Galatasaray v Juventus (winners to play Liverpool or Tottenham)
    • Benfica v Real Madrid (winners to play Sporting or Manchester City)
    • Borussia Dortmund v Atalanta (winners to play Arsenal or Bayern Munich)
    • Qarabag v Newcastle (winners to play Barcelona or Chelsea)
    • Club Brugge v Atletico Madrid (winners to play Liverpool or Tottenham)
    • Bodo/Glimt v Inter Milan (winners to play Sporting or Manchester City)
    • Olympiacos v Bayer Leverkusen (winners to play Arsenal or Bayern Munich)

The draw that will determine the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will take place on 27 February.

Pope: It’s basically a system that lets the top teams who underperform get another chance to reach the knockouts when they don’t deserve it. Paris St-Germain winning it last year is a prime example. It’s designed to boost early viewers by keeping more lower-ranked teams in the running, but then still stacks the odds for the higher-rated sides, beat one team and you’re back in the knockouts. It's all about money!

  19. More drama in Lisbon?published at 18:59 GMT 17 February

Twenty days ago Benfica were heading out of the Champions League despite leading Real Madrid 3-2 with seconds remaining.

    Then something extraordinary happened.

Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin went up for a set-up piece and scored a stunning 98th-minute goal to send Jose Mourinho's side into the knockout phase play-offs - and Real Madrid, who had started in an automatic last-16 spot, dropped to ninth.

Three weeks on and the two clubs meet again having been drawn together in the knockout phase play-offs.

That can only mean only one thing...more drama is Lisbon!
