I think if people are expecting similar to the last game then they will be disappointed because there's different circumstances, it's a two-legged tie. This is just the first game so I think it will be quite cagey.

I think the only way this game could explode is if there's an early goal, perhaps by Real Madrid, then Benfica will realise they need to fall into that mindset where they have to go for it.

One thing people forget about that last game because of the way it dramatically ended is Benfica played brilliantly. They really played Real Madrid off the park. They should've been winning by three or four goals. They do know they've got the firepower to hurt Real Madrid.

Madrid are very up and down this season and just changed manager recently, so they'll feel they have a chance.

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid lost to Liverpool, Manchester City and Benfica in the league phase...yet here they are with a chance to join fierce rivals Barcelona in the last 16.

Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Liverpool and West Ham full-back who took charge after Xabi Alonso's exit in January, said: "Our goal isn't to take revenge on Benfica, our goal is to win the Champions League, and beating Benfica is a step in that direction.

"Benfica did not surprise me last time at all, because I know what all of Jose Mourinho's teams are like. It would be the same even if he played with the youth team. It's a new match, nothing like the one three weeks ago."

Benfica v Real Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Benfica's hero from the league phase, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, has touched on the war that is occurring in his homeland Ukraine.

Trubin told Amazon Prime his goal-scoring moment "brings some happiness to people".

He added: "I think he (Jose Mourinho) was so happy. I came into the dressing room, and we just shook hands."

Patty: Simple steps to make this modern circus of a competition more fair and more palatable: 1 - this round should be one leg, 9th-16th placed teams have home advantage; 2 - the round of 16 should be one leg with the teams finishing 1-8 having home tie; 3 - QF and SF home and away; 4 - play two more rounds of league phase to get fairest final table. Job done.

PSG know the Champions League play-offs all too well after taking the same route last season.

Luis Enrique is unconcerned by the extra matches, saying his side can win back-to-back Champions League trophies.

"If any team is ready for the play-offs, it is us," Luis Enrique said.

"We knew it was a possibility that we might have to go into the play-offs. We will have to take the long route, but I don't think anyone else can be considered favourites more than us."

Atalanta finished the league phase with back-to-back defeats, losing against Athletic Club (2-3) and Union Saint-Gilloise (0-1). The only time they have suffered three consecutive losses in the same edition of the Champions League was in their first-ever three matches in the competition, back in 2019-20.

Alvaro Arbeloa's Real Madrid tenure is only five weeks old - but Tuesday's Champions League trip to Benfica already feels like it could be a defining night for the fledgling boss.

The 43-year-old replaced Xabi Alonso last month and, despite no official confirmation, sources close to both the club and Arbeloa told BBC Sport he has a contract until the end of next season.

Real knew the appointment of a head coach with no top-level managerial experience was risky.

And after a slow start for Arbeloa and a less than positive reception from supporters, they quickly started planning for potential replacements - including former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca - in case another change was needed.

But after six wins from their past seven matches, there is a new feeling of calm among the Real hierarchy with the club top of La Liga. However, Arbeloa will know failure in Europe would pile the pressure back on once again.

Anony: It is a curious type of competition where you have a league of 36 teams yet you only play against 8 of them and where you can finish two thirds of the way down the league and still qualify. The format may bring financial benefits for some, but let's not pretend it has anything to do with sporting merit.

Monaco secured a place in the Champions League play-offs on the last matchday against Italian side Juventus. Much like the rest of their campaign, this game was a stalemate and saw them finish 19th, one point inside the play-off spots.

The Ligue 1 side only won twice against Bodo/Glimt and Galatasaray, drawing four and losing two others.

Boss Sebastien Pocognoli will hope his side up their game and hit form at the right time as they have the tricky test of facing reigning champions PSG this evening.

I watch the Champions League for what it is, not what it's advertised as. Rarely does it have anything to do with being champions, but it gives us some of the best match-ups I've ever seen. European football is beautiful, give me Premier League teams playing Champions League football any day.

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho, speaking about his former club Real Madrid: "They are wounded. And a wounded king is dangerous. We will play the first leg with our heads, with ambition and confidence. We know what we did to the kings of the Champions League. [Anatoliy] Trubin won't be in the attack this time! I'm very used to these kinds of ties, I've been doing it all my life. People often think you need a certain result in the first leg for this or that reason. I say there is no definitive result."

Former Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Germany centre-half Antonio Rudiger have both returned after spells out with injury, strengthening Real Madrid's defensive options.

Boss Alvaro Arbeloa was particularly complimentary of Alexander-Arnold after Saturday's 4–1 victory over Real Sociedad, where the full-back provided an assist - and his coach said Real were "lucky to have" him.

"We're not going to discover anything new about Trent," Arbeloa told Real Madrid TV.

"It was a nice surprise to see how he understands the game, how he finds the spaces. Those things are very important for a coach - having players who understand what we want."

However, Real remain without England midfielder Jude Bellingham - who is not expected back until April having injured his hamstring last month.

Victor Osimhen creates another goal for Galatasaray - a one-two allows Boey in on goal which he dispatched neatly away.
