    Hants 238 v Somerset 214-7

We are under way in the second session on day two at the Utilita Bowl.

Jack Leach plays and misses the first delivery after lunch by Hampshire's Codi Yusuf, who starts around the wicket.

  2. 'Essex would have taken bowling Warwickshire out for 190'published at 13:33 BST 18 April

    Lunch: Warks 190 v Essex

    Don Topley
    BBC Essex

Resuming on 113-7, Warwickshire enjoyed a better morning as the home tail batted well with the resolute and responsible Sam Hain.

The Essex bowlers had to be patient as Jamie Porter could not add to his overnight wickets tally, but bowled well.

Hain and the returning Keith Barker added a 31-run partnership before Barker clipped in the air, to mid-wicket. Ethan Bamber soon went for a duck before Nathan Gilchrist batted with character to add 45 runs for the last wicket partnership with Hain.

Slightly frustrating for Essex but they would still have taken bowling Warwickshire out for 190.

Sam Cook collected the final wicket, that of Gilchrist, clean bowling the number 11, leaving Hain undefeated for a fine 88 not out. That 10th wicket partnership was worth an excellent 45 runs. Lunch has been taken.

Middlesex hit back strongly after failing to claim a third batting bonus point at Wantage Road.

Toby Roland-Jones and Tom Helm removed Luke Procter, Calvin Harrison and - on the stroke of lunch - Ricardo Vasconcelos inside four overs to leave Northamptonshire tottering at 42-3, still 299 behind.

With effective use of the new ball always vital at Northampton, the home side would have been delighted to see 30 on the board without loss.

But Helm made the initial breakthrough by trapping Procter in front, before Roland-Jones accounted for Harrison - via a leading edge to cover - and Vasconcelos, edging behind.

It gave Middlesex a timely boost after falling nine runs short of a third batting point earlier in the session as Ben Sanderson recorded his 23rd five-wicket haul for Northamptonshire.

This partnership is worth 45 runs but clearly Hain is the man of the moment, he's batted beautfifully.

Gilchrist has just patted the senior batter on the shoulder as he's walked off.

He's probably a little bit disappointed, he may feel as though he's let him down.

    They're applauding Sam Hain here.

  5. 'Undone by some relentlessly accurate bowling'published at 13:21 BST 18 April

    Lunch: Hants 238 v Somerset 214-7

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Not the morning that Somerset were looking for.

They were initially contained and then undone by some relentlessly accurate Hampshire bowling.

James Rew, possibly relaxing after seeing off Kyle Abbott’s opening spell, played a rare loose shot and was caught in the gully while Tom Abell got a good one from Liam Dawson.

In between, Will Smeed took 23 balls to get off the mark and then holed out with only his second shot in anger.

Somerset will be looking to Craig Overton to give them some sort of lead.

They started with excellent discipline from Kyle Abbott and Sonny Baker, both bowled demanding spells.

They didn't allow that fourth wicket pair to get away again after their excellent batting the night before.

They've just hammered in at a good length and line, giving the Somerset batsmen nothing.

The pitch has helped the bowlers a little bit. There might've been a spin there for Dawson, a bit of a reverse swing for Baker as well.

They've totally deserved those four wickets they've taken Hampshire and put the game very much in the balance.

  8. wicket

WICKET and Lunch at Northamptonpublished at 13:14 BST 18 April

    Vasconcelos c Cracknell b Roland-Jones 29 (Northants 45-3 v Middlesex 341)

A second wicket for Toby Roland-Jones and that's lunch.

A nagging line from the Middlesex veteran who gets a delivery to move in a touch and take a feather of an outside edge off the bat of Ricardo Vasconcelos.

Joe Cracknell takes a comfortable catch behind the timbers.

    Game on.

  9. Lunch at Bristolpublished at 13:12 BST 18 April

    Gloucs 136 v Lancs 73-1

Lunch at Bristol and it's been an excellent start to day two for Lancashire.

Fantastic bowling this morning from James Anderson who picked up three wickets as Gloucestershire were all out for 136.

George Balderson claimed his second five-for in first-class cricket for The Red Rose as the seamers did the job pretty comfortably in the sunshine down in the South West.

In reply, Lancashire have moved onto 73-1, trailing by just 63 runs, with Josh Bohannon 13 not out, and opener Keaton Jennings 29 not out, after Luke Wells gave his wicket away - picking out Will Williams at mid-on for 27.

    Gilchrist b Cook 7 (Warks 190 v Essex)

Sam Cook nips one through the defences of Nathan Gilchrist and clatters into the timbers to end a super final-wicket stand.

He was the junior partner in a nagging 45-run partnership with Sam Hain who walks off for lunch on a superb unbeaten 88.

The Bears have put on 77 runs this morning for their final three wickets.

    Harrison c Geddes b Roland-Jones 0 (Northants 37-2 v Middlesex 341)

    Middlesex go bang-bang before lunch.

Calvin Harrison looks to clip a straight ball from Toby Roland-Jones through midwicket but a leading edge flies to Ben Geddes. Two-ball duck.

Nathan McSweeney joins Ricardo Vasconcelos who is on 22.

  12. Lunch at Southamptonpublished at 13:02 BST 18 April

    Hants 238 v Somerset 214-7

Lunch at Southampton - and what a fightback it has been in the morning session by Hampshire!

It has been superb bowling on a pitch which has provided some reverse swing on the day two in a much improved performance by the hosts compared to their showing at the end of the day yesterday.

Somerset's James Rew was caught for 86 and Tom Abell fell one run short of a half-century to a terrific delivery from spinner Liam Dawson.

Jack Leach (2 not out) and Craig Overton (18 not out) will return to the crease in approximately 40 minutes or so after Somerset captain Lewis Gregory misjudged an inswinging delivery by Kyle Abbott to see his off stump dislodged for 2.

WICKETpublished at 12:58 BST 18 April

    Procter lbw b Helm 13 (Northants 30-1 v Middlesex 341)

    Breakthrough for Middlesex!

Tom Helm changes to around the wicket and thuds a ball into Luke Procter's front pad.

The dropped catch off the Northants skipper in the previous over costs nothing.

Near the knee roll, but the finger goes up.

    Calvin Harrison joins Ricardo Vasconcelos.

  14. Postpublished at 12:58 BST 18 April

    Warks 183-9 v Essex

Sam Hain takes a step down the wicket and launches an off drive back past Jamie Porter for four to move into the eighties.

This is some knock from the Bears man who came in at 12-2.

A single brings in Nathan Gilchrist who gets in on the act with his first boundary.

Good over for the hosts as the Essex frustration grows.

  15. Postpublished at 12:54 BST 18 April

    Hants 238 v Somerset 209-7

Jack Leach edges Liam Dawson's second delivery of his 14th over but it falls just short of first slip.

Somerset have scored just 55 runs for the loss of four wickets in the opening session on day two.

  16. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 12:54 BST 18 April

    Northants 27-0 v Middlesex 341

Middlesex were three down for 20 on the first morning, but it's been mainly smooth sailing so far for the hosts.

Toby Roland-Jones' delivery sits up nicely and Luke Procter slams it through forward square leg for four to move to 13.

But he has a life next ball as an outside edge flies to a diving third slip who can't hold on with his left hand.

  17. 'Lucky Overton'published at 12:54 BST 18 April

    Hants 238 v Somerset 209-7

    Simon Hughes
The Analyst on The Cricket Social

That was a good angle. It so nearly got through, inside edge on the pad.

I thought it maybe just trickled onto the stumps. A lucky escape for Overton.

I think it's reversing actually, that's what he's trying to do Baker because of the roughness of the pitch.

The ball's 62 overs old and there's a bit of a reverse swing happening.

  19. Postpublished at 12:48 BST 18 April

    Hants 238 v Somerset 207-7

Jack Leach knows all about left-arm finger spin and looks to send Liam Dawson over the rope.

The former gets away with it, however, completely missing the ball and Dawson has his hands on his head - he is probably unlucky just to have picked up a single wicket so far today.

  20. Postpublished at 12:44 BST 18 April

    Warks 172-9 v Essex

Back-to-back wides from Sam Cook as he tries to hide the ball from Bears set batter Sam Hain.

the third/fifth ball is straighter and Hain sets off for a single after a glance into the offside but changes his mind with three balls still to come.

He decides to take the sngle to the next and Gilchrist comfortably sees out another over. Mature innings this.
