Now it's Cameron Green beating Will Jacks' edge! Wicketkeeper Alex Carey waves a hopeful hand in the air, appealing for a possible caught behind, but is ignored by everyone.

That's drinks. England are ticking along nicely.

This rotation of strike has sort of been forgotten about. It is a really important part of the game.

    Joe Root does it beautifully.

  5. Eng 373-6published at 90 overs

Scott Boland has spent much of this first hour after lunch with his face contorted into a rueful grimace. He's beaten Will Jacks' bat half a dozen times but is yet to add to his two wickets.

Jacks and Root have put on 50 (93) for the seventh wicket.

Enjoying the 5th Test. I honestly think we need to get positive about the way we are playing. Root has led by example yet again. We need to punish the Aussies when we get to bowl. 3-2 will be a good result from this series.

Will Jacks has a small smile to himself as Scott Boland angles another delivery past his outside edge.

Boland has looked more threatening than Mitchell Starc with the new ball.

Joe Root will have the appetite for runs now after these two centuries. He is Mr Dependable.

Will Jacks is helping him along nicely.

I have decided that it is because of me that England are doing better. Arrived in Sri Lanka on the 2nd had a quiet word with Buhhda on the 3rd and here we are. Eat. Pray. Cricket.

Sid here on a nightshift. Firstly great to see Glenn McGrath raising such invaluable funds and support for his wonderful charity. Secondly, you can slate Jamie Smith but he could end up second or third highest scorer in this innings. Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Stokes - we would have liked 46 off each of them. Otherwise keep up the good work.

Joe Root on his own has faced more balls in this knock than the whole England team managed in four of the eight innings so far this series.

That really jagged back. Height has saved Will Jacks there.

  14. Eng 363-6published at 86 overs

Scott Boland has both arms outstretched, begging the umpire to raise his finger. He's convinced he has Will Jacks lbw.

The umpire says no. Steve Smith opts against the review. A wise decision.

Trying to ignore the ‘details’ and re-assure myself that if I’d been offered 347-6 after 80 overs at the toss, I’d have snapped your hand off.

    John, Newcastle

Have the Aussies been taking notes from Rassie Erasmus!? Marnus bowling bouncers (long hops), Webster bowling off spin...some outside the box thinking! I say there's more room for that in Test cricket.

    James, Kent

Oops. Australia are going to really punish England with the bat after that Labuschagne/Smith 'incident', aren't they...

Joe Root takes a single to move onto 145.

With the final two balls of the over, Mitchell Starc beats Will Jacks' outside edge and then strikes him on the body.

The great challenge for this England group is to accept that they have not won big series. It was similar when they played against India.

I love the flamboyance but there is an element of complete stupidity at times.

  18. Eng 361-6published at 84 overs

Will Jacks adds another four runs to his total, nudging through backward point and beating the dive of Michael Neser on the rope.

He's struck a couple of times by nipping deliveries from Scott Boland but doesn't seem particularly fazed.

Clever bowling from Mitchell Starc. He is dangling the carrot for Will Jacks.

  20. Eng 357-6published at 83 overs

Hmmm, I'm not sure about Will Jacks being "in his groove" just yet.

He picks up four through square off Mitchell Starc but is also guilty of a wafty old drive and miss in the 83rd over. That could have been trouble.
