Ben Stokes' dismissal brought Jamie Smith to the middle and his 46 (76) was filled with nervy moments.

He was handed a life on 22 when he was caught by Marnus Labuschagne off a Cameron Green no-ball.

Unfortunately, Joe Root's team-mates haven't been quite so brilliant.

Harry Brook - on 78 overnight - only added six to his tally before being caught by Steve Smith off Scott Boland.

And captain Ben Stokes was caught behind off Mitchell Starc for an 11-ball duck as England slipped from 226-3 to 229-5.

Before we get onto Jamie Smith, let's give Joe Root a deserved moment in the spotlight.

A second Test century in Australia and unbeaten on 138 (200), including 14 fours, at lunch on day two.

Here are the highlights from his innings so far. Trust me - watch them. They're a welcome tonic.

Thanks Tim - a solid stint there with the extra half hour.

I particularly enjoyed the post you had sat in drafts reflecting on England navigating the end of the morning session "without any alarm". Jamie Smith had other ideas...

    Alarm aplenty.

After an extended session I need to top up the energy levels. Elizabeth Botcherby is here to continue the Jamie Smith fume.

Jamie Smith's horrific dismissal is what happens when your team culture proudly promotes zero accountability for giving your wicket away and where squad selection means you cannot be dropped.

As an Englishman living in Sydney and called James Smith, I wish to offer myself as Jamie Smith’s replacement for the 2nd innings.

An awful innings ended by an awful shot. For that shot alone Jamie Smith has to be dropped. Minutes from lunch and you decide you want to gift a part timer a wicket after spending most of your innings trying to get out. That's nothing to do with coaching, it is just sheer individual idiocy, a total lack of game management and completely unprofessional. What makes it worse is Smith didn't even look angry with himself. How he even got to 46 was beyond me. After that total dereliction of duty, he has to be dropped.

    That's lunch.

We should be discussing Joe Root's second hundred in Australia, but it's impossible to ignore the main talking point - that Jamie Smith brain fade a few moments ago.

  8. Root not outpublished at 78 overs

It's clearly hit the pitch before Alex Carey claimed it. Nothing to see here.

Did that carry? Steve Smith is asking the umpires to do a review but the players are walking off.

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 78 overs

Joe Root steps outside off stump and sweeps Travis Head behind square for four.

Not quite as convincingly, Root reverse sweeps and Carey claims the catch off what looks to be a bump ball from the England batter's glove.

The umpires want to have a look.

Travis Head with the final over before lunch.

Will Jacks ends up yorking himself but the ball skids through to Alex Carey rather than into his stumps.

What do you even say to Jamie Smith when he comes back into the dressing room after that?

  13. Eng 330-6published at 77 overs

Marnus Labuschagne thinks he's Joel Garner now, bouncing Joe Root and Will Jacks.

Root takes on the hook and it's in the air for a bit, prompting some OTT reactions from Labuschagne on his follow through.

Root backs away at the end of the over, seemingly unhappy with some movement behind the bowler's arm.

    That is filthy.

A pure lack of discipline from Jamie Smith.

On the brink of lunch. What on earth was Jamie Smith doing?

What on Earth is Jamie Smith doing? Spent his whole innings playing brainless cricket. Given so many chances and reprieves then does that. Mindless!

    Ben in Stratford

Jamie Smith, no words, I give up. Do none of them have my match or tactical awareness?!!

    Mark, Spennymoor

That’s the worst shot in the history of English cricket.

No, no! You cannot get out to this surely.

One of the worst dismissals I have ever seen.

    Deary me.

On the charge sheet of daft dismissals in this Ashes series this is possibly top.

Another delivery banged in halfway down by Marnus Labuschagne and somehow Jamie Smith, backing away to leg, ends up miscuing a slap to cover.

    A truly horrific dismissal.

Labuschagne bowling bouncers with seven men out is a new low in a poor-quality series.
