    Brook c Smith b Boland 84 (Eng 226-4)

Gah. Harry Brook has rather foolishly thrown it away here.

Scott Boland angles it into Brook and he just hangs his bat out to a wide one that moves away a tad and edges it to Steve Smith in the slips.

He did not need to play that.

Brook punished for a misjudgment. He closes his eyes and looks to the heavens as he walks off.

On a night security shift at my age, 55 not out. Come on boys let's have some sensible batting! Freezing here in Morecambe.

A tennis-style smash from Harry Brook as he slaps Mitchell Starc back over his head. Brook does not quite middle it so has to settle for three.

  4. Eng 218-3published at 46.1 overs

Mitchell Starc does go short to Harry Brook first up, and the England batter swivels on his heels and whips it square. He's denied a boundary by Beau Webster on the fence, though.

It will be interesting to see how Australia go about this. If I were them, I would go with the bouncer theory straight away to Harry Brook.

  6. Eng 217-3published at 46 overs

Mitchell Starc will bowl the second over of the day.

This pitch might get a bit quicker today. It looks beautiful.

Australia were not on it yesterday, as they usually are, and head coach Andrew McDonald gave a long speech before play.

  8. Eng 217-3published at 46 overs

A single apiece to finish the over for Joe Root and Harry Brook. A calm and composed start by the Yorkshiremen.

England should go big today. They have a good, flat pitch here.

Harry Brook and Joe Root have set this platform up beautifully for the lower order to play their shots against a tiring Australia attack.

  10. Eng 211-3published at 45.1 overs

A thick edge off Joe Root's bat from Scott Boland's first ball to start. Played with soft hands by Root and the ball races away for four.

England up and running on day two.

Things were curtailed early yesterday because of the weather, but thankfully the forecast for today is much improved. All being well, we shouldn't lose a ball today.

We're starting 30 minutes earlier for the remainder of the Test to make up the lost time.

Packs of mince pies going for 30p in the supermarket the other day, Phil.

    Make hay, I say.

Sir Alastair Cook and Graeme Swann have just done a mini pitch report on TNT Sports.

Cook highlighted a few cracks that might open up later in the game, while Swann says there might be some movement early on with all the weather yesterday. They both agree it's 100% a batting day, though.

Evening all. I come to day two armed with mince pies, brandy cream, dark chocolate mints, and lashings of coffee. In for the long haul and hoping to stay awake all night. Having Monday and Tuesday off work has its benefits given the freezing weather and the light dusting of snow hitting Bristol tonight. Best regards and thanks for the commentary.

England cannot throw this away. They need to finish this series on a high otherwise it will be remembered as one that has all gone wrong.

Be sure to watch the highlights if so. Plenty of Joe Root and Harry Brook to feast your eyes on.

  17. Welcome...published at 22:45 GMT 4 January

Two of Yorkshire's finest, Joe Root and Harry Brook, shared an unbroken stand of 154 runs for the fourth wicket yesterday.

It was England's highest partnership of the Ashes. Is the longstanding 'strong Yorkshire, strong England' mantra still ringing true?

Doubtless Boycott, Illingworth, Hutton, Yardley et al would approve.

Welcome to live coverage of day two of the fifth Ashes Test from the Sydney Cricket Ground.
