  1. Eng 294-5published at 67 overs

Cameron Green bustles in with about 20 minutes until the lunch break. He goes short to Joe Root with his penultimate ball of the over, but it's a controlled pull from the England batter.

Root very much in cruise control here.

With no hundreds in eight Test matches in 2020, Joe Root has now scored a hundred in each calendar year since the start of 2021. Root now has 24 hundreds since the start of 2021, 14 more than the next best.

Most centuries in Tests since the start of 2021:

    • Joe Root - 24
    • Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Shubman Gill and Harry Brook - 10
    • Travis Head - 9

The biggest difference in Root's consistency has been his ability to convert 50s to 100s. Until 2020, he'd converted 26% (17 out of 66) of his 50-plus scores to 100s. Since the start of 2021 though, that conversion rate has jumped significantly to 59% (24 out of 41).

Joe Root looks a million dollars as he deftly flicks Michael Neser wide of mid-on for four. David Gower, watching on at the SCG, will have appreciated the aesthetics of that.

This is a funny old innings from Jamie Smith. It is swashbuckling but he is living dangerously.

    Entertaining nonetheless and proving profitable.

  5. Eng 286-5published at 65 overs

After a rather chaotic previous over for Jamie Smith, he's decided to have a bit of reset, and defends the first three deliveries from Cameron Green.

Last ball of the over, though, and Smith slashes a thick-ish edge over the slip cordon for four.

There are blue skies and a gentle breeze. A lovely day in Sydney today.

Those cracks in the pitch might bake and open up a little bit more.

This partnership between Joe Root and Jamie Smith now worth 51 runs.

Former Australia batter Damien Martyn has woken up from an induced coma and is making a "miraculous" recovery.

The 54-year-old was admitted to a Queensland hospital on 27 December and diagnosed with meningitis.

In a statement on behalf of Martyn's family, close friend and former Australia team-mate Adam Gilchrist said on Sunday: "It's been an unbelievable turn of events in the last 48 hours.

"[Martyn] has responded extraordinarily well since coming out of the coma to the point where his family feels it's like some sort of miracle."

Martyn played 67 Tests, 208 ODIs, and four T20Is for Australia between 1992 and 2006.

This pitch has had a little bit more bounce and movement on the seam. It may have impact for another hour or so.

After lunch yesterday, it did less and the batters looked more comfortable.

Cameron Green collects his cap then trudges down to his fielding position. He cannot believe his luck.

There is a millimetre in Cameron Green's foot over the line. That was a bad shot from Jamie Smith.

Jamie Smith is lucky! He has been reprieved.

    A life for England.

  15. Eng 278-5published at 62.1 overs

Jamie Smith gets an almighty reprieve.

He drills Cameron Green into the hands of Marnus Labuschagne at cover and starts to trudge off.

However, it's deemed to be a no-ball after Green had oversteped.

The hirsute Michael Neser nags away outside Joe Root's off stump with Alex Carey stood up to the stumps. A maiden over from the grizzled Aussie seamer.

Jamie Smith gives himself a mental ticking off after the drinks break.

He throws his hands at a delivery on a length from Cameron Green which definitely was not there to drive so expansively at.

Can we not invent the term "Root" as the word you use when you have ran out of superlatives?

Joe Root just does the job. It is experience and he knows his game so well.

Harry Brook has potential but he is too eager to show all of the shots in his armoury. He has the possibility to be one of the greats.
