For the second day running, England have put up a coach - it's Marcus Trescothick today - for media duties.

That tells you plenty about how this game is going.

England's chances are mounting a famous comeback to win the Ashes from 2-0 lie in tatters then.

Having bowled Australia out for an under-par 371, the tourists are set to give up a sizeable first-innings deficit.

The hosts bowled superbly and, for the most part, England's batters can't be criticised for throwing their wickets away with loose shots but you won't win many games on a pitch as good as this with not one top-five batter managing to reach fifty.

  3. 'We'll have another crack in the morning'published at 07:09 GMT 18 December 2025

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's been a pretty tough day, nice and hot out there, but it's been nice to contribute and finally get into the series.

"I just bowl my best and do the basics really well. There's no secret behind what I do, it's just about doing the basics for a long period of time and create a bit of pressure.

"Pretty proud about how the boys went about it. Pat's been phenomenal as captain as always, but the effort from our fast bowlers to get them 213-8 off 68 overs it's a pretty big effort so rest up, recover and we'll have another crack in the morning."

There have been times when we have criticised England for poor shot selection, but that is Australia's day. Australia have got England in a real mess here.

Ben Stokes blocks his way though Nathan Lyon's over and that is stumps.

The England captain will be back with Jofra Archer to start day three but it is another day that quite clearly belongs to Australia.

They have taken another huge step towards winning the urn, leading by 158 with just two more first-innings wickets to take.

England have definitely got themselves in a hole with Shoaib Bashir.

I can remember Australia trips when the batting doesn't fire, and you want that extra batter.

Maiden over from Cameron Green as Jofra Archer defends stoutly.

He is offered some width halfway through it but can't beat the in-field with his cut shot.

Time for one more over and given a wicket will spell the end of the day's play, England will be batting to start day three.

They have done some remarkable things, this England side.

A 100-run lead is a big lead, but it is not insurmountable.

Barring a stirring England fightback to win this Test that involves a big score from Ollie Pope, that must surely be among the options to be considered for Melbourne, John.

Two from Lyon's over, a single apiece for Stokes and Archer.

Surely the way Ben Stokes has batted in this innings and the last Test he would be better at three. With batsmen able to "play” around him, rather than Stokes batting with the tail every time?!

Solid defence from Ben Stokes throughout Cameron Green's over.

After five dot balls, the left-hander nudges the ball to square leg and calls Jofra Archer through for a quick single to keep strike.

Nathan Lyon is coming back on at the other end with a little more than 10 minutes left in the day.

Woke up with some trepidation but this performance is a total capitulation, where's the English bulldog spirit gone?

A couple more singles come from Pat Cummins' latest.

The Australian bowlers are looking a little weary now, which is to be expected after the best part of a day out in the field in near-40 degree heat.

It does make you wonder what might have been had England managed to keep another couple of wickets in hand. Losing Harry Brook just before tea was particularly painful.

I think things will have to change a bit - weight of runs and style of play isn't the only factors here.

It has, perhaps, been a bit this way or the highway.

It has been set out that this is the way they think it is going to work and it hasn't.

I think now the net will be cast a little wider.

What would happen if Sir Geoffrey Boycott or Sir Alastair Cook had been playing at the moment? Would they be overlooked? There is more to cricket than just one way.

Jofra Archer goes after another bouncer, this time from the returning Cameron Green, and top-edges a pull shot.

The ball sails into the leg side, Marnus Labuschagne sprints in from the deep backward square and dives... but the ball bounces just short.

Not only that, it gets through for four. Archer is up to 28 now, Ben Stokes has 42 from 134 balls.

Ben Stokes in the past two Tests (in Brisbane & Adelaide) has played 19% attacking shots and 15% false shots.

He's been the most defensive batter and also been the most secure of all English batters in these two Tests.

All other England batters overall played 34% attacking shots and 22% false shots.

Cheers and applause - only somewhat ironic - from the England fans in Adelaide as a Ben Stokes single to point takes the visitors to 200.

The over ends with Jofra Archer taking on a Pat Cummins bouncer, miscuing it slightly but getting two as the ball lands between the two fielders in the deep.

Australia have bowled well and England have not had an answer to it.

In this innings, it does not seem that they have lived by those values that they have been talking about.

For us at home, that is great they have tried to adapt their game to the conditions, but you have to question what they have done in the last three years if they keep coming into different Test matches like this and change the way they are playing.

What are the team's values, and what are they staying true to?

  19. Postpublished at 06:31 GMT 18 December 2025
