  1. Aus 101-1published at 16.3 overs

Four, four, four for Travis Head!

The Australia opener attacks England captain Ben Stokes, striking three consecutive boundaries at the start of his over.

One through the covers, a pull to the square boundary, then a shot down the ground to bring up Australia's century.

  2. Aus 89-1published at 16 overs

Gus Atkinson returns and Australia's batters take a single apiece of his first over.

As the players take drinks, let's take a look at the one Australia wicket that has fallen in this session.

Brydon Carse dismissed debutant Jake Weatherald for 23.

  4. Aus 87-1published at 15 overs

    Target 205

Just one slip in place for Ben Stokes, who bowls round the wicket to Travis Head.

The Aussie left-hander throws the kitchen sink at a wide one from Stokes but fails to make contact.

Lots of glum faces in the field for England. Have they lost belief?

It's been a great move from Australia to bring Travis Head up the order. Even if he gets out now, he's done his job.

The only thing that could change this is Ben Stokes. He's the man who always brings something for England.

  6. Aus 87-1published at 14.2 overs

England need some inspiration from somewhere.

Captain Ben Stokes brings himself into the attack.

  7. Aus 86-1published at 14 overs

A first four for Marnus Labuschagne, sending Brydon Carse's delivery past mid-on.

A further three comes through mid-wicket.

This is Travis Head's second fastest fifty in his Test career, out of 30 fifty-plus scores. It's also his fastest fifty in a Test in Australia (out of 20 fifty-plus scores).

He registered his fastest earlier this year in Sri Lanka, a 35-ball fifty in Galle.

When you're chasing 205, it's just two partnerships really. England have just got to find a way to get the momentum going back their way. They need to get Travis Head out.

  10. Aus 79-1published at 13 overs

Marnus Labuschagne gets off the mark with a two through square, then takes a single to mid-wicket.

90 minutes left in the session.

What on earth is this field? This is embarrassing. This is going to be one of our worst ever defeats given where we are at lunch and it's totally self inflicted.

    Jim in Bucks

I hate being negative - but the bowling choices they have made are working bar injury. But for goodness sake the batting, why with all the money and the pool of players and the pool of players always taken from other countries, have we not been able to build a solid reliable batting order in the last 15 years? And that has Joe Root and Ben Stokes involved, two of are greatest players. So frustrating as ever. Will it ever change?

    Ollie in Carmathen

I’ve been listening since 4am and despair at our batting. I have zero faith in the top order. Zak Crawley was already out (no surprise there) when I switched on and almost every ball was Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope swishing and missing. Then we have a clearly out of form Joe Root followed by the dancing Harry Brook. It’s been great having TMS back especially with the added bonus of the brilliant Jim Maxwell and Glen McGrath but ruined by atrocious England batting. This is for Glenn - I think we will lose the series 5-0!

Travis Head's half century has featured three sixes and three fours. It's the second quickest 50 by an Australian opener in Ashes history and the third fastest by any player.

    What a superb 50 it's been.

    Half-century up for Travis Head!

Mark Wood fires in a yorker and the stand-in opener nonchalantly whips it square for a single, bringing up the landmark off 36 deliveries.

It just bounced a bit more for the wicket. Weatherald played that shot a few times but the top edge was found, not a great stroke. He was looking to really try and dominate then and it really worked.

  16. Aus 75-1published at 12 overs

Marnus Labuschagne, back in his carded position of number three, sees off the last three balls of Brydon Carse's over without scoring.

A masterclass in aggressive, but sensible batting. Safe to say that Australia has recovered from their shellshock of the first innings.

    Peter in bed

Already feels a bit like the writing is on the wall here. Promoting Travis Head and building a decent base to the innings feels like a winning move. England ought to be well aware that a team like Australia, at home, probably won't bat badly twice in the same match. The English middle-order collapse was a gift to the Aussies. It's going to be a long tour if a group of fast bowlers are constantly obliged to try and salvage poor batting performances.

    Gordon

We’re being out-Bazballed, and we’ve been outplayed and out-thought. The Aussies will be crowing about this one for weeks.

  20. wicket

    Weatherald c Duckett b Carse 23 (Aus 75-1)

    Commentator's curse, Jim.

Two balls after he pulled Brydon Carse through mid-wicket for four, Jake Weatherald departs.

He tries another pull and offers a loopy leading edge to Ben Duckett in the covers.
