    Hampshire 55-2 - require 348 to win

Job done by Ali Orr and Jake Lehmann who have added 36 runs in 20.1 overs and have settled early nerves after Toby Albert and Nick Gubbins departed early in their second innings.

34 overs remain in the day.

If these two stick around we won't see all of them, I'd wager...

Matt Fisher goes in search of a breakthrough, but has to settle for a sixth straight maiden.

Ali Orr and Jake Lehmann are proving a point to the naysayers that Hampshire can indeed bat a bit in 2026.

A draw would take them off the bottom of Division One, though they'd still be on one win from seven games.

Is it going down? It knocked Ali Orr almost off his feet. Must have been going down the leg side. Big shout but umpire Pollard kept his hands to his sides.

These two left-handers have done a good job here for Hampshire though.

Tom Curran joins the attack for the first time with 36 overs remaining in the day, at least, if they keep rattling through them.

    Eight wickets to find.

Ali Orr survives a big scare from the third ball as Curran slams a swinging yorker in at leg stump but it's just sliding down. Nasty stuff.

Orr was almost knocked off his feet.

He leaves the next with a flourish and drives the penultimate ball to mid-on before defending the last.

    Guess what, another maiden...

Matt Fisher sends down a fourth straight maiden over.

One Hampshire boundary in the past 12 overs, and even that was seven overs ago.

Jake Lehmann is averaging north of 50 this summer but seems content to save the game, which you can understand.

He is on 10* from 55 balls.

Jordan Cox in the England squad instead of Dan Lawrence. Should Dan feel slightly aggrieved with his current form, or should we be considering how easy runs are to come by at the Oval?

    Nick, Westminster

Given the Essex man has two digs for England Lions and a T20 appearance against old side Kent last night as his only competitive action since February, it's a fair question, Nick.

Matt Fisher returns to the attack in place of Jordan Clark but Jake Lehmann is content to block and nudge and sway his way through another maiden over.

The sunshine has gone and there's a blanket of cloud again, which might help Surrey's attempts to prise out another wicket before tea, which is 13 minutes away.

Pace bowler Jofra Archer and batter Jordan Cox have been added to the England squad that won the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's by 115 runs.

Those two replace Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, who have been withdrawn following an incident at a London nightclub.

It of course means there is no place for Dan Lawrence, who has impressed with a double century and a ton for Surrey here.

Surrey's Matt Fisher and Hampshire's Sonny Baker, who may be options to replace Atkinson's pace bowling. remain in the squad after being released to play in this game.

So.. what run rate is required to get the win?

    JB, Southampton

It's ticked up to 7.33 an over, though Hampshire have only scored at 2.29 in the opening 24 overs, JB, so I wouldn't get too excited about the prospect of a dramatic chase.

Jordan Clark has posed a lot of questions in his five overs but Surrey will be getting antsy and want at least another one or two wickets before tea at 15:40 BST.

Jake Lehmann shows some good back-foot defence to keep the door closed for now and sways away from a short ball before a last ball no-ball.

    Breaking

Some breaking news coming in this afternoon from the national setup.

Ben Stokes will miss England's second Test against New Zealand at The Oval following an incident in a London nightclub, with Joe Root stepping up as interim captain.

Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson, who is also omitted from the squad, broke the team's midnight curfew in the early hours of Monday morning and were present when a member of England's security staff was struck by Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa.

Harry Brook is England's vice-captain, yet has been overlooked. He was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington in October on the eve of a one-day international against New Zealand.

And so it means a sensational return to the captaincy for Root, who led England in a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022.

    Hampshire 53-2 - require 348 to win

Jake Lehmann gets a slice of luck as he drives at one from Jordan Clark and the edge flies over Rory Burns at slip and away for four runs.

Big appeal from ball three as Clark gets one to swing across to the leg side and the ball pops into the hands of Dan Lawrence at short leg, though it's come off the thigh pad rather than the bat.

Lehmann sees out the over without further alarm.

We live in a world where Joe Root is England captain once again... some breaking news incoming shortly.

Ali Orr on strike to face Jordan Clark and unfurls a big drive to the second ball but it flies past the outside edge of his blade.

Orr leaves a couple while the third comes back a long way as Orr shoulders arms leaving Clark frustrated.

Another maiden over. 20 gone. 44 remain, though if Will Jacks continues Surrey might sneak another few in at this rate.

On the discussion of eight points for a draw...

Well, if it is 16 points for a win then 8 each for a draw is logical. Unlike football which defies mathematical logic.

    Hampshire 48-2 - require 348 to win

Will Jacks returns at the Vauxhall End and Jake Lehmann gets an outside edge to third allowing him to run two.

A punch towards the pigeons at deep cover brings a single before Ali Orr does likewise three balls later for another.

Jacks beats the edge of Lehmann's bat from the final ball, which grips a touch and scoots through, and is left with his hands on his head.

  20. Postpublished at 14:59 BST 10 June

    Hampshire 44-2 - require 348 to win

Ali Orr pulls Jordan Clark away through mid-wicket from the first ball of the over but it loops over James Taylor and drops safely allowing Orr to run two.

Orr whips his bat out the way of the fourth delivery at the last moment but is nearly cut in half by the fifth which nips back and thumps him on the belly button.

Orr shies away from a short final delivery and Hampshire are quietly going about the necessary business.

46 overs remain in the day.
