To be fair, Notts were also denied the chance to beat Hampshire in the last round of matches when 140 overs were lost to the rain.

    Nigel, Derby

Surely worth giving Sam Curran a go -- he makes things happen in T20 & the Hundred.

    Rick, Aylesbury

Sam Curran is down as a batter only in this game, Rick. He's not been cleared to bowl after a groin injury in the IPL in the spring.

Sean Abbott and Dan Worrall, along with Gus Atkinson, are being missed this week.

    Hampshire 83-2 - require 348 to win

Jake Lehmann picks up another boundary with a flick to the rope at fine leg to move on to 20* and the run-rate has ballooned to 2.2 an over.

Reece Topley gets one to rise up at the left-hander who wheels out of the way as Ollie Pope takes it above his head.

For all the rearguard action, the fight there has been and the battle, we've seen some gloriously timed shots along the way.

    Hampshire 79-2 - require 348 to win

Ali Orr whips one off his pads from Tom Curran for a couple to backward square leg.

A no ball follows before Orr ends the over with a lovely punch down the ground to the long-off boundary.

He has 43* from 103 balls. Really good innings this, very sensible indeed.

27 overs left on the slate.

I know a lot of people won't agree with me. As great as it was this morning and it was great batting to watch, I still thought they [Surrey] batted for too long.

I mean, Hampshire were never going to get 300.

    Hampshire 71-2 - require 348 to win

Jake Lehmann ducks under a Reece Topley bouncer for the umpteenth time before Topley wobbles a slower ball past the outside edge and the off-stump to oohs and ahhs from the field.

Lehmann leaves one which nips back at him a touch before a lovely push through the covers for a boundary. Timed to perfection. That's 16*.

Topley beats the outside edge with the final ball which jumps up at him.

Possibly half an hour left in this game if they agree to shake hands at 4:50pm. 5pm is the other option.

At the moment, I think it would be a brave man to say that Surrey will win this.

Finally we've seen a bit of fight with the bat [by Hampshire]. We've seen the best first innings score and some real good fight from these two here.

They will get off the bottom of the table and they've been bottom since they lost to Glamorgan early in May, so that's quite a while at the bottom.

    Hampshire 67-2 - require 348 to win

Tom Curran finds the outside edge of Ali Orr's bat but it squirts along the turf to slip as it's back-to-back maidens for Surrey.

Nice to have, but not what they need with 29 overs remaining.

For those interested in a potential chase, the required rate is up above 9.6 an over.

  9. 'Hampshire should take confidence if they draw'published at 16:19 BST 10 June

It's been terrific work from this pair. Battling display by Hampshire who may well be grateful for the interruptions we've had with the weather.

But all the same, if they leave this ground with a draw, I think they'll not quite be buzzing but will hopefully be filled with a little bit of confidence in their play as they go forward in their season.

Reece Topley returns to face Jake Lehmann, who ducks under a bouncer.

Lehmann then follows one down leg side but Ollie Pope can't hold on diving to his right.

Is that a chance? Topley thinks it was. Might have come off his hip though. Definitely a noise.

A maiden over but a case of what might have been...

That's a repeat as Ali Orr pulls it for four in exactly the same place again.

  12. Postpublished at 16:14 BST 10 June

    Hampshire 67-2 - require 348 to win

Tom Curran drops one in short and Ali Orr swings the ball away off the front foot through mid-wicket for four... the first boundary in 11 overs.

Like London buses, there's another, almost identical. Orr has 37* but has to fend off some chin-music from the final ball with a fine straight bat in mid-air.

  13. Postpublished at 16:09 BST 10 June

    Hampshire 59-2 - require 348 to win

Reece Topley has Dan Lawrence at silly mid-off and Sam Curran at short leg to try and apply some pressure but Jake Lehmann digs out an attempted yorker.

He sways out of the way of a short ball which actually stays pretty low before Lehmann drives pleasantly through the covers for two runs.

They're flowing like wine now. He's on to 12*.

    32 overs remain.

Now we've got cloud cover again and with the cloud cover, that's when things have started to happen.

The floodlights are on but Surrey need a couple of wickets quite quickly here after the tea break.

  15. Postpublished at 16:05 BST 10 June

    Hampshire 57-2 - require 348 to win

Ali Orr picks up the first runs in what feels a calendar month (actually seven overs) with a glance to long leg to take him to 29*, the only runs off Curran's over.

Reece Topley will replace Matt Fisher at the other end after a fine early spell for his 2-10 off six overs.

  16. Final session under way at the Ovalpublished at 16:02 BST 10 June

    Hampshire 55-2 - require 348 to win

Here we go then, it all comes down to this.

Ali Orr and Jake Lehmann return to the middle with a minimum of 34 overs left in the game.

Tom Curran bowls the first over after tea, Orr on strike.

We have a lot of cloud around but no wet stuff as yet.

If this ends up as a draw then Surrey only have themselves to blame - they have not thought about what a reasonable target could be on the final day.

    William, Chelmsford

I think if Surrey had taken two more wickets on the third afternoon and enforced the follow-on all this would be moot, William, and we may not be here now...

A 15-minute barrage after tea changed the entire complexion of the match and seemed to catch Surrey sleepwalking.

If this were to end as a draw, Surrey will get 15 points which will take them to 89 [up to second].

Hampshire would get 13 points which would put them above Leicestershire on 53 points [in ninth].

Both sides will have played one more game than the other eight teams in Division One.

Lehmann has just taken root here.

It's not the Lehmann we've been used to in the short time he's been here at Hampshire, but I like this version.

Rehan and Jofra should replace Stokes and Atkinson... Drop Bashir...Sonny Baker instead... Strong England team... Despite no Stokes.

    Kevin, Sussex

Weather forecast? Is the rain coming to save this game!?

    Michael, Kettering

There are a few showers around in London, Michael, but then there have been all afternoon and none of them has impacted the square at the Oval yet.

Hampshire might not even need Mother Nature coming in at five at this rate, though...
