  1. 'Hampshire have transformed the game'published at 16:57 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 286-9

    Roushan Alam
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

The last hour has really transformed this game.

It doesn't maybe transform what might be the eventual result but Hampshire went from being some way off a bonus point, some way off avoiding the follow-on.

But within the space of 35 minutes they've gone from a precarious situation to now only 14 runs of a second batting point.

Still a long way to go in this game and you still feel Surrey are favourites, but relief for Hampshire and hopefully that positivity will encourage them.

  2. Postpublished at 16:55 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 286-9

Delano Potgieter gets off strike with a single and then sends Kyle Abbott back when he starts off for a single off the final ball of the over.

    Good cricket.

14 more runs for a batting point which would triple their number for the season.

  3. 'Well-deserved 50 for Potgieter'published at 16:53 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 285-9

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

That is a very, very good innings from the South African.

Very early on he got a very painful blow on the side of the elbow and he was clearly in pain but he's battled through it.

And that is a very, very well-deserved half-century.

  4. 50 runs

for Delano Potgieterpublished at 16:53 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 285-9

Delano Potgieter takes strike on 48* but turns down the chance of a couple of singles off Matt Fisher.

Now I see why, he cuts the next ball with aplomb past point and brings up his half-century in style from 117 balls with his fifth boundary.

He got a painful bang on the arm in his opening minutes at the crease but look at him now. He's delighted.

  5. Postpublished at 16:49 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 281-9

A maiden from Matt Fisher with the new ball and Will Jacks is now withdrawn from the attack with Jordan Clark taking the fresh cherry.

Not sure that experiment after tea particularly worked from a Surrey perspective.

Kyle Abbott lofts an uppish cut to backward point from Clark's first ball for a boundary and then survives a big appeal from the second before getting through the rest of the over without alarm.

Hampshire are 140 runs behind and 19 shy of a second batting point of the match.

  6. 'Positive innings from Fuller'published at 16:44 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 277-9

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

It was a positive innings from James Fuller. He didn't really give us any heart-stopping moments in terms of worrying about the follow-on, worrying about the bonus point.

He got Hampshire in the end, quickly over the line for both. But he's contributed to his own downfall there by coming down the wicket.

The ball just angling across the right-hander and he was nowhere near the pitch of the ball.

Smart bit of work by Ollie Pope behind the stumps.

  7. new ball

New ballpublished at 16:43 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 277-9

A little after the Lord Mayor's show, to be honest... but Surrey have taken the new ball and given it to Matt Fisher.

This is now Hampshire's highest first innings score of the season.

  8. 'Against the flow'published at 16:42 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 277-9

    Roushan Alam
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Well that's against the flow of play because Jacks has been dispatched left, right and centre.

In the end he's taken the important wicket of James Fuller.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:41 BST 9 June

    Fuller st Pope b Jacks 24 (Surrey 421 v Hampshire 277-9)

    Job done, pretty much...

James Fuller charges down the wicket at Will Jacks, misses the ball and is stumped by Ollie Pope.

His vital 24 runs have earned a batting point and potentially saved the game, however.

Jacks has a wicket, though at quite an expense in terms of the context of the game...

Kyle Abbott is last man in.

  10. 'Relief for Hampshire'published at 16:39 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 277-8

    Roushan Alam
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It's a big one and the fielders could do nothing but watch it fly away.

This is turning into a very long afternoon for Will Jacks but a good one for Hampshire because they will now avoid the follow-on.

Relief for Hampshire as they cross that threshold. Surrey will have to bat again.

What an important partnership this has been.

  11. 6 runs

for Delano Potgieter - follow-on avoidedpublished at 16:38 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 272-8

Delano Potgieter follows James Fuller and brings up a major milestone with a whopping six towards cow corner off WIll Jacks.

Just like that, a new phase of the game is here... Hampshire can seek another batting point and Surrey's hopes of victory to go top of Division One have taken a huge hit.

  12. Postpublished at 16:36 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 266-8

Delano Potgieter flicks James Taylor into the leg side for a single to move to 40*.

James Fuller picks up another to reach 20* from 18 balls and Potgieter guides to third for a single to retain strike.

Six away from avoiding the follow-on.

  13. 'What a counter-attacking over'published at 16:34 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 264-8

    Roushan Alam
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

What a way to bring up that batting bonus point.

    We've experienced a T20 over there. What a counter-attacking over.

Suddenly avoiding the follow-on doesn't seem like such a tall order.

Any idea when Sam Curran will be able to bowl? I feel like if Surrey can enforce the follow on they will have some very tired bowlers. Shame he can't have a twirl. James Taylor bizarrely underused.

    Tommy, Norwich

Sam Curran is not going to be bowling in this game, Tommy. You'll have to make do with Tom.

I think it's partly due to his recovery from a groin injury in the spring.

  15. 'No mucking around from Fuller'published at 16:33 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 263-8

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

It's the first six and the second batting bonus point of the season, woohoo!

No mucking around there from James Fuller, let's just get it.

  16. Postpublished at 16:32 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 263-8

James Fuller adds a four through mid-on from the next Will Jacks delivery and pulls another through deep mid-wicket before cracking the last through mid-off for another.

    19 off the over.

T20 Blast stuff from Fuller and all of a sudden the follow-on target is nine runs away.

This begs the question about why Surrey opted to open with Jacks after tea...

  17. 6 runs

For James Fullerpublished at 16:30 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 251-8

Delano Potgieter nudges Will Jacks into the leg side for a single to keep the scoreboard ticking before James Fuller does indeed bring up the bonus point with a HUGE six over mid-off.

What a way to double the batting bonus point tally for the season.

I was actually joking about one ball too...

  18. Postpublished at 16:28 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 244-8

James Taylor is back into the attack at the Vauxhall End for the first time.

We've seen rain in this game, will we see fire?

James Fuller cuts the third ball to third off a top-edge to get off the mark with a single.

Delano Potgieter defends off the back foot but the next ball keeps low and is dug out well by the South African who then dabs the last into the covers for another single to keep strike.

Six more for a bonus point. One ball, maybe?

  19. 'Important for Hampshire to collect bonus points'published at 16:27 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 243-8

    Roushan Alam
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

We talk about these bonus points and it's going to be important for Hampshire to collect as many as they can, especially being down the bottom of the table.

    Survival is crucial.

  20. 'Hampshire not far off bonus point'published at 16:25 BST 9 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 242-8

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Hampshire, as we know, haven't batted particularly well in the Championship this season.

Only one batting bonus point to date. They're not far off the second. That might be the first target.
