Powerplay bowling hasn't necessarily been one of England's strengths in this tournament. They have taken wickets but their economy rate has been no better than OK.

That's one of the topics cover in this piece.

Has Geoff got a direct line into Melie Kerr's ear? She charges the first ball of the day from Charlie Dean and clobbers it for four.

New Zealand need to go up a gear. You can't face this many dot balls when you need to set an imposing target.

  5. NZ 47-0published at 7 overs

New Zealand appeared keen to attack Ecclestone in the series between these sides at the start of the summer but England's left-arm spinner makes a tidy start here. There's a reverse sweep at the end of the over which finds the fielder at backward point.

It feels like a turning point. New Zealand have got a decent start but Sophie Ecclestone could just settle in to a spell.

We've seen Sophie Devine take her down earlier this summer and they've got to show intent against her.

Ouch, it looks like it came off Gaze's glove. It wasn't a catching chance, Jones did well to get her body in the way.

Melie Kerr welcomes Dani Gibson to the attack by backing away and slicing a cut for four. She scoops a straight ball later in the over too, resulting in some oooohs and aaaaahs from the crowd.

By the end of the over Izzy Gaze is trying to copy that shot but only scoops the ball into wicketkeeper Amy Jones. You can't really call it a chance.

    Powerplay done.

Melie Kerr is just starting to find her stride but they've got to make this last over of the powerplay a big one.

It's a tricky balance, Tony? Do you risk losing momentum or just keep playing what you see as your best team?

I think I'd go with the latter. England have got something going.

PutneyTony: I am surprised that some of the squad players were not selected in case we need them in the semi-final or final. We are bound to win the group anyway.

Better from Melie Kerr, who swings Linsey Smith's spin over square leg for four.

It's hard not to think about the likes of Sophie Devine sitting in the dugout when the openers are nudging it around and going nowhere.

There hasn't been much power in this powerplay.

As we thought, there's a bit of bounce in this pitch. Lauren Bell gets the ball up around Izzy Gaze's gaze with a bouncer.

England have made a busy start in the field with Charlie Dean buzzing around to set the intensity.

Melie Kerr has struggles against left-arm spin, and especially early in the powerplay. In all T20Is since 2024 in the first six overs, Melie Kerr averages 10.3 at a below-par strike-rate of 81.6 against left-arm spinners. England rightly using Linsey Smith to counter this match-up.

I'm in the outside press seats at The Oval opposite the pavilion. The stand above us is doing an awful lot of creaking, resulting in some concerned glances. We'll be fine, right?

Izzy Gaze gets down on one knee to sweep her first boundary in Linsey Smith's second over.

Just a bit too much width there from Lauren Bell. There's very little room for error on this pitch.

Melie Kerr cuts Bell through the off side now to take the second boundary in the over. Despite the heat, the flamethrowers erupt in front of me.
