In their opening game of the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup, Phil Salt was the only England batter to truly rise to the occasion.

He top-scored with a knock of 62 from 40 balls that stood out in an otherwise faltering England display.

In the warm up games, England successfully defended a low score on this ground...maybe hold off all the negative stuff until it's finished?

    Eng 146-9

England stagger to 146‑9 in the end after they failed to build any sustained partnerships.

This might just be well short of a truly competitive total but they will hope the pitch does them some favours when they come out to bowl.

It looked out from the moment it came off Jofra Archer's bat. There was a full length dive but it was the sort of catch you expect to take.

I don't know what's happening. I think we're being gaslit by the England team who said they wanted to play with fearless intent!

  12. Eng 126-7published at 18 overs

Jamie Overton comes to the crease and England need quick runs from the new batter now. But it takes Overton four balls to get off the mark before Will Jacks misses the final delivery despite a swing at it.

Maheesh Theekshana finishes his spell with a brilliant over with a wicket and two runs from it.

I don't think that's a bad thing at the end of the innings. Jamie Overton is either going to come off or not, he's just one of those players. He's got to try and hit everything for six.

Maheesh Theekshana's penultimate over was shaping up to be another good one for Sri Lanka until Will Jacks drives it through the covers for a boundary to make it eight runs from the over.

But England will be far from pleased with the plight they find themselves in at Pallekele at the moment.

Nobody should be surprised by this performance so far. England have been poor all tournament and Sri Lanka have performed pretty well so far. This was always going to be tough for England on their current form.
