I don't want to alarm anyone, but the last time England fielded for an entire day without taking a wicket was on this ground in 1989, when Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor racked up 301-0 for Australia on the first day of the fifth Ashes Test.

  5. NZ 194-0published at 49 overs

The mercury is rising at Trent Bridge and England's bowlers look pretty cooked at the moment.

Ben Stokes is trying to lead by example with the ball as he works away searching for something outside off stump but there is no reward.

It'll be a little bit like this for at least half of this game, folks.

  8. NZ 189-0published at 48 overs

Shoaib Bashir has his hands on his head.

He holds the pace off a delivery to Tom Latham who rather fiddles at it as it turns away.

Latham has moved into the nineties now. Not-so-nervous nineties on this deck.

  9. NZ 186-0published at 47 overs

Ben Stokes hits Tom Latham on the inner thigh as he defends. England appeal, but it looks too high.

Latham picks up a single off the final ball of the over with a nice prod into the covers.

Latham is 87 not out while Conway is unbeaten on 89.

Since scoring a century on debut (200 at Lord’s in 2021), Devon Conway has not scored another Test hundred against England or in England. Overall, Conway has seven centuries and 14 fifties in his Test career.

I wonder how long it will be until we see one of the part-time spinners like Jacob Bethell or Joe Root.

Ben Stokes grimaces after Tom Latham inside edges one which bounces downwards and a whisker away from the stumps.

Stokes is on his haunches a couple of balls later when a delivery pops up off the splice of Latham's bat but short of mid-wicket.

The England skipper giving his all here.

Contemplating why England players don’t seem to wear sun hats these days. Stuart Broad is the last one I remember regularly sporting one.

    Jane, melting in SW London

Is anyone else not annoyed by the newer England players not tucking their shirts in? James Rew and Jordan Cox the last game and now Emilio Gay. Someone in the England dressing room please tell them to, it’s doesn’t look very cricket-y.

Lots of heat/weather chat on TMS.

My wife, who is from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, described yesterday as a "pleasant spring day in May back home" moments before I stuck my head under a cold shower.

Devon Conway dances down to Shoaib Bashir and biffs it four straight down the ground.

Ben Stokes brings himself into the attack.

A lovely seam presentation from the England skipper with his penultimate delivery as he finds a bit of nip but Tom Latham is able dab it square for a single.

Flat pitch, hot day. If England had batted first you'd like to think we'd have prospered like the Kiwi openers have done. But if I was asked to bet on it I'd guess we would be three or four down by the same stage.
