The last time an opposition opening pair scored a 100-run partnership against England was New Zealand's Latham and Young in December 2024, in Hamilton.

A 27-innings streak has been broken today.

  2. NZ 133-0published at 33 overs

Devon Conway tilts his helmet forward to drain out the sweat before Josh Tongue begins his latest over.

Just the single off Tongue's over. England starting to build a little mini spell of pressure here.

  3. NZ 132-0published at 32 overs

Gus Atkinson with a tight over. Just a single off it.

England need to build some pressure here. All too easy going at the moment.

This has an ominous feel about it at the moment.

  5. NZ 131-0published at 31 overs

    Latham 61*, Conway 65*

Josh Tongue catches Tom Latham by surprise with a yorker which the slams into the pad of the Kiwi opener and he scrambles a leg bye.

Final delivery of the over and Conway drives on the up but edges between first slip and gully for four.

Would that have carried if there was a slip in place? possibly not.

Worse still for Tongue, it's a no-ball and Conway picks off another boundary with a confident thrash through the covers.

Picking three quicks considering the weather has been the wrong choice nothing happening and again not many balls would have hit the wickets. Been very easy this morning for the NZ openers.

    Phil, Trent Bridge

Winning the toss was always going to be important in good batting conditions, one senses that it could be a long stint in the field for England.

    Pete, Birmingham

New Zealand have a good start. If this momentum continues and they score around 400, England may struggle.

    Venkatesh, India

  9. NZ 119-0published at 29.1 overs

A bit of a freebie from Gus Atkinson to start after lunch via a wide full toss and Devon Conway cashes in with a thumping drive through the covers.

Not exactly a session tone setter.

Not a cloud in the sky at Trent Bridge. Most of the fans have left the stands to seek a bit of shade during the lunch break.

Definitely a day for slip, slap, slop as the great Richie Benaud used to say in his familiar mellow tones.

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's been steady going for New Zealand. Tom Latham has been more compact about the way that he's played the ball. He's allowed it to come to him and he's played the ball. He's had a bit of fortune at third slip area, other than that he's looked pretty solid. Whereas Devon Conway is pushing out a little bit more.
