  1. dropped catch

Latham dropped on 129published at 63.1 overs

    NZ 276-0

Oh, that should be taken every day of the week.

Gus Atkinson's delivery is a little tight on Tom Latham and it brushes the opener's gloves as he attempts a pull.

It goes through to Jamie Smith who has side-stepped a couple of paces, it should be an easy gather but the ball goes straight his gloves and hits the deck.

Ah wait, no, it's a change of ends for Shoaib Bashir.

His second ball is short and Tom Latham pulls it for four through mid-wicket.

My eyes says this is one of the better wickets have seen here today and I am just wondering if the stats back it up.

You’ve got to feel for New Zealand’s number three batter - sitting around padded up all this time.

    Phil, Leeds

  5. NZ 268-0published at 62 overs

After a torrid spell after tea, Shoaib Bashir comes off and is replaced by Gus Atkinson.

Devon Conway dispatches a four through square - his 22nd of the innings.

As Stephen Shemilt told us earlier, the last time England fielded for an entire day without taking a wicket was on this ground in 1989.

On that occasion Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor racked up 301-0 for Australia on the first day of the fifth Ashes Test.

Australia won that match by an innings and 180 runs.

There's a deep dark sadistic part of me that actually wants to see these two bat through to stumps. Watching two Test openers going about their business like this is both frustrating as an England fan but brilliant to watch as a fan of Test cricket.

    Paul, Devon

  8. NZ 262-0published at 61 overs

Hey, not all that far from Ben Duckett.

Devon Conway drags the ball past the fielder at short mid-wicket - perhaps a taller man might have stood a chance.

After that single, England ask for a ball change and as it isn't passing through the ring instrument they get their wish.

It doesn't help their fortunes - Josh Tongue's first delivery with the new cherry is dispatched through square for four.

  9. 6 runs

    NZ 256-0published at 60.3 overs

    Six more for Devon Conway!

Josh Tongue's bouncer does not really get up and Conway launches it over the ropes at backward square.

Prior to that, a single from Tom Latham brought up New Zealand's 250.

There have been nine instances of England's opposition batting first and the opening pair both making a century in Tests, including today.

England have lost four and drawn four of the previous eight Tests.

  11. NZ 249-0published at 60 overs

    Big call from Shoaib Bashir!

A delivery to Devon Conway ends up in the hands of the slip, and England briefly chat about a review, but decide against it.

That was wise, with the ball seemingly coming off Conway's toe.

Having got through that, Conway slams a wide and short delivery from Bashir through third for four more.

  12. 6 runs

    NZ 243-0published at 59.1 overs

Devon Conway's cracking on after lunch!

Another bad ball from Shoaib Bashir and the New Zealand opener launches him over long-on for the game's first six.

  13. NZ 237-0published at 59 overs

Josh Tongue starts dropping it short to try and make the breakthrough.

It forces Gus Atkinson to do a fair amount of running in the deep on the leg side boundary, as the New Zealand batters send the ball in that direction.

This is a sizable opening stand by Tom Latham and Devon Conway.

However, we are still quite away off the highest ever in Test history in case you are wondering.

That was by South Africa openers Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie, who put on 415 for the first wicket against Bangladesh at Chattogram in 2008.

One thing Shoaib Bashir has done nicely today is he's been more consistent. But it's hot out there, he might be getting tired.

  17. NZ 233-0published at 58 overs

Oooof, bad ball from Shoaib Bashir, sitting up to be struck through mid-wicket for four by Devon Conway.

That takes Conway to 111, one run fewer than batting partner Tom Latham.

  19. NZ 228-0published at 57 overs

Ah, after a tantalising sight of Jacob Bethell it turns out it was just to facilitate a change of ends for Josh Tongue.

Devon Conway adds another four from the England seamer, striking off his toes.
