Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. NZ 169-0published at 42 overs

Shoaib Bashir, who will have sore shoulder by stumps today you would imagine, continues after drinks.

With his fourth delivery he offers a bit too much width to Devon Conway who shows deft footwork to late cut it for four.

England continue to toil in the heat.

On the bright side, had England won the toss batted, they'd be 150-7 by now, so there's that...

Can't wait to watch us be bowled out for 250

I have tickets for day three, hope New Zealand aren’t still batting then.

    Tilly, Leeds

Been in meetings, came out and had to check I'd not turned wicket alerts off. Are we finally going to get to bat on Saturday when the clouds come?

    Tim, Soulbury

Got in from working in the sun. The wife said she thought I'd be home earlier to watch the Test. I replied that it must be raining as I've not had an alert all day. Logged on. Found out why! Might go back to work!

  7. NZ 164-0published at 40.2 overs

    Uh oh.

Devon Conway would have been out if England had reviewed that delivery from Shoaib Bashir.

Ball tracking showed three reds and it hit the pad before the bat.

    An opportunity missed.

Meanwhile, Jofra Archer is threaded through deep third by Tom Latham for four.

  8. NZ 157-0published at 40 overs

Shoaib Bashir, collar turned up, finds a bit of drifts with his off spin..

A crowd catch into the hands of Joe Root at short cover with his fourth delivery before tickling the pad of Devon Conway with his penultimate ball but there's no suggestion of a review.

Re sweetgate (13:08). Right on the money, Graham in Somerset.

I just have a bad feeling about this Test already... a big total and England chasing the game.

  10. NZ 156-0published at 39 overs

Another yorker with surprise factor from Jofra Archer which Tom Latham does very well to dig out. That was honing in on the stumps.

Archer can only chuckle to himself at his luck, or lack of it.

Later in the over, Latham gets another yorker from Archer but this time he is ready and opens the face to guide it for four through the vacant third.

  11. NZ 149-0published at 38 overs

In the haze of the Trent Bridge sunshine this pitch almost has a subcontinental tinge to it as Ben Stokes turns to Shoaib Bashir.

The Derbyshire spinner spins one past Tom Latham, Jamie Smith and away for four byes.

Are England officially in toiling territory yet?

Just a single off Jofra Archer's over but the England quick is thankful to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith who dives full length to the leg side to prevent what would have certainly been four byes.

Devon Conway and Tom Latham both unbeaten on 70.

Brendon McCullum is clutching his walkie talkie, like Elliott from ET, on the England balcony.

Michael in Andover re sweetgate (13:08), you've got some of the right names but in the wrong order.

That his been Devon Conway's favourite shot today, the drive and punch.

England's best hope to Conway might be a strangle down the leg side. Which is probably the definition of a good pitch.

  15. NZ 144-0published at 36 overs

A pleasing square drive from Devon Conway fizzes along the lengthy square at Trent Bridge for four.

Gus Atkinson tuts to himself and walks back to his mark.

A couple of balls later and Atkinson angles one down leg side which Conway swishes at but misses.

  16. NZ 137-0published at 35 overs

Joe Root's England cap is already quite sun faded and sweat stained. The mesh lining will have perished by the end of this Test.

Jofra Archer beats the edge of Devon Conway's bat with a delivery which found a bit of movement.

About as close as England have come in the 40 minutes after lunch.

Time for Jofra Archer to inject a bit of pace and aggression into England's attack as Trent Bridge continues to sizzle.

The last few Tests here have seen teams picking up 4-500 runs plus - remember the NZ Test four years ago where we chased 300 in no time at all after both sides posted 500 in the first innings? Let's not write us off until we've batted too.

    Dan, Leeds

  20. NZ 135-0published at 34 overs

Two runs off Gus Atkinson's latest over. No boundaries for three overs.

Can England's attack draw a loose shot from Tom Latham and Devon Conway?

"Sweetgate is more entertaining than the actual Test," says Steven in Saltire having proposed three possible suspects (see 13:08).
