Meat and drink for Henry Nicholls whatever the state of the ball.

  3. NZ 349-2published at 80 balls

Gus Atkinson angles one into the hips of the left-handed Henry Nicholls and Jamie Smith taking a diving catch to his right.

With Nicholls attempting to work it fine there's a mooted appeal, but Atkinson himself is not interested.

TV replays show it brush the pocket of the Kiwi batter.

Nicholls pulls a single off the final ball of the over to pinch the strike.

  5. NZ 348-2published at 79 overs

Your wish is Ben Stokes' command, John, as Joe Root is brought back into the attack for his third over.

A couple of dots before Rachin Ravindra bunts him for a single.

The crowd at Trent Bridge is starting to thin a little with just over 30 minutes of play left in the day.

Get Root back on. Wicket and great economy. Got a future as a spin bowler has this lad.

    Richard, Northampton

  7. NZ 346-2published at 78 overs

The new ball due in a couple of overs.

Do England take it now? Or consider preserving it for tomorrow when their attack is a little fresher?

I can’t remember the last time a Derbyshire player got 100 in the runs column for England. Bashir is so close!!

    Jon, Derby

  10. NZ 343-2published at 77 overs

England with a deliberate tactic to try to snare Henry Nicholls down the leg side as Jofra Archer bowls round the wicket to the Kiwi left-hander.

It's a plan not without it's merits but Nicholls pulls one off his hips for four behind square.

I would not like to be Henry Nicholls having to live up to a 317 run opening partnership right now!

    Matthew, Billingshurst

We're definitely back in it now. Just nine more 317-run partnerships and we'll have them all out!

    Kian, Chessington

  15. NZ 332-2published at 75 overs

Six overs until the new ball but Jofra Archer is summoned by Ben Stokes.

Archer beats the outside edge of Henry Nicholls' defensive prod with his first ball of the over and does likewise to Rachin Ravindra with his final delivery.

However, sandwiched in between are more runs for New Zealand.

A leg-side flick from Nicholls just misses the fielder at leg slip but races away for four before the Kiwi batter pulls Archer through mid-wicket for another boundary.

  16. NZ 323-2published at 74 overs

Rachin Ravindra joins Henry Nicholls at the crease.

The Kiwi batter plays a trademark straight drive through the covers for four.

New Zealand fans will be purring at that shot.

Devon Conway is attacking by instinct. He's pieced together a wonderful innings. If he could just play out until stumps that might have served New Zealand a little better in the long run.

    NUMBER 10 BUSES!

You wait all day for a wicket and you get two in quick succession.

Devon Conway attempts to heave Joe Root into the leg side and ends up skying it towards cow corner.

Substitute fielder Matthew Fisher is there to take a tricky catch. He dare not drop it.

Another generous ovation from the Trent Bridge crowd for Conway who raises his bat to salute them.

This is just the second time both opposition openers have scored 150+ in the same innings against England.

The other instance was South Africa at Edgbaston in 2003 - Graeme Smith (277) and Herschelle Gibbs (179).

  20. NZ 319-1published at 73 overs

Tom Latham bellowed a little "no" after playing that half-hearted waggle for the ball which dismissed him.

Henry Nicholls with a bit of risky single to Jofra Archer at mid-on to get off the mark but the England quick's throw to the non-striker's end misses the stumps.
