A flash and miss from Travis Head. He's looked a little skittish in these first few overs.

This story is familiar in English sport, where we hang onto people too long i.e. Broad and Anderson in cricket. Then the next lot don't get enough experience in time.

  4. Aus 173-2published at 37 overs

Travis Head gobbles up a fuller delivery from Ben Stokes, hammering it through mid-wicket for four.

He has his outside edge beaten a couple of time as Stokes gets a bit of movement off the surface. One, however, was a front-foot no-ball.

A single off the penultimate ball takes Head to 97 (98). Michael Neser leaves well alone.

Australia just need to see off Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes.

Michael Neser is better than a nightwatchman and if he can get past those two, he will have done tremendously for his team.

That is a long scrape before the bat brushes the floor. It is very fuzzy but it is the right decision.

  7. Not out - Aus 167-2published at 36 overs

Michael Neser survives. A big scrape of his bat along the ground, no bat on ball.

England have only got one review left.

    He looks guilty to me.

  9. England reviewpublished at 36 overs

Some early screams for a caught behind against Travis Head, Jamie Smith diving to his right and taking a low catch in two hands. Head was trying to flick it around his legs. Bowler Josh Tongue shakes his head.

The over finishes with a more enthusiastic appeal for caught behind, this time against Michael Neser.

The umpire says no. Ben Stokes sends it upstairs.

I like this field. Two slips and a gully and a few fielders on the on-side. You would think Ben Stokes is going to hammer this length.

These bowlers need to be accurate - they cannot go short and wide.

  11. Aus 166-2published at 35 overs

Nightwatchman Michael Neser, who copped a nasty blow on his right elbow late on day two, plays out a maiden to Ben Stokes to start day three.

Australia can easily whistle past this total. You are never safe with any total and if England do not get onto Travis Head this morning, he will run away with this.

Righto. A burst of rain brought day two to a premature close midway through the final over.

Ben Stokes will resume with five balls to bowl in the 35th.

Travis Head is unbeaten on 91 (87) and nightwatchman Michael Neser has 1 (15).

Australia are 166-2, trailing by 218 runs.

England's bowling unit has felt like a nothing attack in this Test.

I felt for Matthew Potts because he did not look great yesterday. It was a hard watch but Ben Stokes cannot do everything.

Hopefully the England bowlers are going to pitch it up and have learned from their mistakes yesterday. Would have loved to be there on Pink day!

The SCG is awash with pink on day three in support of the McGrath Foundation - a cancer care charity set up by former Australia quick Glenn McGrath in memory of his wife Jane.

The players have pink numbers on their shirts and will shortly present McGrath with their signed pink caps.
