I've been watching England since the late 1990s. A regular line on the news highlight was 'England nearly faced the humiliation of being out for under 100...' I watched us in the early 2010s in the UAE as we collapsed against Pakistani spin. I was woken to Australia chasing 14 to win on day 3/4 on tours down under as my school days began with depressed sighs. I watched Freddie Flintoff fall off pedalos, a team being bowled out in ridiculous circumstances in Antigua, Steve Harmison bowling the first ball to second slip, Rory Burns being castled round his legs on ball one, Stuart Broad and Sir Jimmy Anderson being dropped for a West Indies tour for... reasons. This is by far and away the most embarrassing England tour I've ever listened to. It's not even losing. I don't mind losing, especially not away from home. But just the cricket, in general, we've played has been utterly terrible.

  2. Eng 248-3published at 59 overs

    A maiden for Matthew Potts.

There's an appeal for lbw against Steve Smith early in the over but the umpire says no.

Fortunately for England, who have wasted all three of their reviews, it was too high.

This is a big half an hour for England. They need a couple of wickets before lunch.

It feels like Australia are in control but a few wickets can change things. It does feel flat at the moment.

A Steve Smith single is the only scoring shot of Josh Tongue's 15th over. He has figures of 0-41.

Half an hour to go before lunch. Can England get another wicket? Marnus Labuschagne isn't doing anything - maybe he could come and bowl a few...

You sense Australia are heading for a lead of significant proportion. England just need Travis Head to whack one in the air.

Pretty poor all round by England, but Aussies are still behind by a large amount and its still the first innings, so the doom and gloom may be premature.

    Mo, Darlaston.

Its been mentioned a few times, but who would replace Ben Stokes as captain? Joe Root wouldn't take it, Harry Brook is too busy and no-one else seems able to step up and lead. For better or worse, I'd keep Stokes.

  8. Aus 247-3published at 57 overs

Boundary fielders everywhere for Travis Head. A slip cordon for Steve Smith.

Smith gets off the mark at the sixth time of asking, driving through the covers for two.

Head finishes the over with a thwacked four through mid-wicket. You can put as many people on the rope as you want - he'll find a gap.

It will be interesting to see how Travis Head is going to play now. As a batting side, you can get carried away and they need to be careful not to gift too many wickets.

  11. Aus 239-3published at 56 overs

A couple of ugly attempts from Travis Head - pulling and missing at one before getting in a tangle to a Matthew Potts bouncer - and then he connects, flaying the ball square beyond a diving Harry Brook for four.

Head needs to recover his composure a little. Australia still trail by 145 runs.

A wicket! Brilliant! Here comes Steve Smith, not so brilliant..

    Ben, Pulborough

Right, we are into the tail now. Let’s skittle them out and take a 50-run lead into the second innings.

    Ben, Kent

One decent ball bowled and surprise, surprise they get a wicket. Now for a Smith duck, please.

  13. Aus 234-3published at 55 overs

Steve Smith scratches his mark and spends a bit of time locating and counting fielders. Now he's ready.

He starts with a play and a miss and then has his bat beaten by Brydon Carse.

Michael Neser was playing and missing for fun this morning. He has done his job and frustrated England.

It is frightening what is to come in this Australia batting line-up however.

Finally Brydon Carse gets his reward. England finally have their first breakthrough.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 54.4 overs

    Neser c Smith b Carse 24 (Eng 234-3)

Full delivery from Brydon Carse, outside edge, and safely pouched by Jamie Smith.

Michael Neser is out for 24 (90) and Australia's 72-run third-wicket partnership is broken.

    England's celebrations are restrained.

Out walks stand-in skipper Steve Smith.

Well, these Ashes bowling performances have been well worth pensioning off our greatest ever bowler early for…

    Russ in Upton

What annoys me about this team is I see little anger with the bad bowling, fielding or batting. They constantly don't look bothered bar a few and then they defend the indefensible. While I want Ben Stokes to stay on as an all-rounder in the team, this approach of refusing to admit and learn from your mistakes and defending the indefensible has to stop and it won't until Stokes and Brendon McCullum stand down as captain and coach.

    Stephen, Wheathampstead

There have been many valid negative points raised about this shambles of a tour. To me it's a new low when Glenn McGrath begins to try and find some encouragement for England. It's the end of my love of cricket.

England have now taken 14 bowling reviews this Ashes with only two successful and 12 unsuccessful reviews.

None of the 12 unsuccessful reviews have been umpire's call either to help them at least retain the review.

Travis Head won't mind if he gets out now because Australia are in a good position. It is such a shame because England had a good score on the board but they have just put no pressure on.

  20. Aus 233-2published at 54 overs

Oh, that's a delicate little shot from Travis Head, ramping a short ball over the top of the wicketkeeper. Brydon Carse scrambles around the boundary to save two.

Six from Matthew Potts' 13th over, including a wide.
