This is a good opportunity for England to put their heads together and think about what they can do here.

It is like T20 on steroids at the moment. Plan Z is out of the window.

  2. Aus 229-2published at 53.3 overs

Michael Neser's right elbow is receiving some attention. He was struck there with the final ball of day two and has just been hit again.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

England might have to have a go with Will Jacks. They need to do something to change the pace. This is where not playing a spinner counts.

Travis Head might just miss one.

Losing two reviews on the nightwatcher. Questions need to be asked.

    Viren, Croydon

Forgot to mention we also rubbish at using the review system. Two wasted on trying to get Neser out.

    Will, SCG

Awful reviewing. Always looked outside the line. Twice Stokes who should be the ultimate person making the review has shown a lack of leadership. Very much a captain out of ideas and who needs to stand down and concentrate on his batting and bowling

  5. Aus 227-2published at 53 overs

Brydon Carse follows up the unsuccessful review with a wild bouncer... and it's called wide.

England have wasted two reviews on Australia's nightwatchman.

  11. England reviewpublished at 52.4 overs

Brydon Carse is convinced he's got Michael Neser lbw and talks Ben Stokes into go upstairs.

England only have one review left...

Looked like Neser jabbed his bat down to me?!

Michael Neser might have walked in as the nightwatchman yesterday, but he's no mug with the bat. In the Sheffield Shield in the recent past (since the start of the 2020-21 season) for Queensland, Neser has scored three hundreds in 34 matches at 30.1 average.

Zak Crawley's Test career average is 31.4.

Inside the SCG - this bowling, dropped catch and now the field placing are wild. The captain has absolutely no confidence in these two bowlers currently bowling. Abject all round from England.

Shoaib Bashir must be scratching his head thinking what do I have to do to get back into this side!! He has been really mistreated by the selectors.

    Adam

Matt Potts was a quality bowler when he came into the Test team and when he's played since. Serious questions need to be asked about what is happening that means previously proven and consistent bowlers are incapable of bowling more than a single ball in a good area at a time.

Matthew Potts takes the first over after drinks.

Travis Head winds up for a big heave and completely misses the ball.

He and Michael Neser, who took a single off the second ball, both ignore bouncers.

An ugly first hour and 20 minutes for England. Australia saw off the opening bowlers and then went after the others.

    As we predicted.

Travis Head is flying on 126 off 127 (although he was dropped on 121)

  18. drinks break

    Drinks - Aus 225-2published at 51 overs

    Head 126 (127), Neser 23 (78)

Another boundary for Michael Neser, down on one knee to guide a wider delivery from Brydon Carse through point for four.

    Six from the over.

Time for drinks. It's been Australia's day.

Oh dear. I almost feel sorry for England. Almost.

    Dylan, Aussie in Cornwall.

Not enough has been made about the poor selection of Will Jacks. Being honest he's been picked to prop up an under-firing batting line up and not batted well enough to justify being picked as a batter. He's not bowled any better than Joe Root would have. And now dropped a dolly.

    Dave in Guildford

The absolute state of that drop. The absolute state of this bowling. The absolute state of Jamie Smith's dismissal yesterday. This England team are becoming so unlikeable more than anything.
