He's certainly got no bat to it in my opinion.

Fisher really wanted that one. It's difficult for us to tell because the batter has his back to us.

  3. England reviewpublished at 38.2 overs

Matthew Fisher returns, changing ends and bowling over the wicket to Daryl Mitchell.

And hello, is this an lbw chance? Nothing from umpire Adrian Holdstock, but Fisher is convinced and Joe Root is going to take a look...

The three quicker bowlers have been the real threat for England so far today. Archer, Tongue, and Baker combined have drawn 32% false shots - Fisher, just 12%.

I think the New Zealand batters are out of form. They had a bit of a poke at Ireland. The pitch at Lords certainly didn't help to let them feel comfortable in their batting.

England have been bowling short of a length, I though this would suit Ravindra a bit today but he was held in check by Tongue. He looked a bit frustrated. At this stage of his development, he wants to score all the time off every ball.

  6. NZ 118-4published at 38 overs

Sonny Baker gets us going again after the drinks break.

A couple of singles from the over, moving Tom Blundell to four and Daryl Mitchell to 10.

This pair hold the New Zealand record for a fifth-wicket partnership - 236, against England at Trent Bridge in 2022.

Bert Ironmonger, from back in the day.

    Ian, Spain

    Jamie Porter, Essex Seamer

    Paul, Market Harborough

Going back a few centuries. Dermot Reeve.

    Ali, Taunton

A porter and an ironmonger are self-explanatory. But we thought it worth clarifying that a 'Reeve' is an Old English term for an administrative official serving the king or a lesser lord in a variety of roles.

Josh Tongue is going for about four runs an over but things certainly happen when the ball is in his hands.

  9. drinks break

    NZ 115-4published at 37 overs

A first four for Daryl Mitchell, flashing at a delivery from Josh Tongue and sending the ball past gully.

We head into the drinks break with New Zealand having scored 40 runs for two wickets in the 12 overs since lunch.

Nice moment there for Sonny Baker. Walking down to fine leg after taking his first wicket, he got a nice round of applause from that section of the crowd. Baker responded with a big first pump. Early signs that Brendon McCullum was right - fans are getting behind him.

Great moment for Sonny Baker. Very loud reception for him.

  12. NZ 110-4published at 36 overs

Tom Blundell is next up for New Zealand, he gets going with a first ball single sent behind square.

Sonny Baker gets a big round of applause from the crowd as he heads down to his fielding position on the boundary.

Alastair Cook said "welcome to the club" on commentary after Baker's wicket - he of course has one international wicket, Ishant Sharma caught behind for 13 at Trent Bridge in 2014.

Baker will be hoping for a few more, but drawing level with the former England captain is a good first step.

What a feeling that will be for Sonny Baker to get off the mark, really good catch again from Jacob Bethell. Ravindra will be kicking himself.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 35.2 overs

    Ravindra c Bethell b Baker 33 (NZ 107-4)

A first Test wicket for Sonny Baker!

A leap and a pumped fist by the young England seamer before he is engulfed by his team-mates.

Rachin Ravindra was just beginning to get going but is now heading back to the pavilion, having offered a flying edge.

It's a smart catch from Jacob Bethell, his second of the day, taking it tight to the body at gully.

  15. How's stat?!published at 15:06 BST 17 June

    Andy Zaltzman

New Zealand have left 26% of balls today.

Despite its bowl-first reputation, The Oval has been a place where you can recover from starting poorly with the bat. India won in 2021 after posting 191; England won in 2023 after scoring 283; and India won again last year after putting 224 on the board.

  17. NZ 107-3published at 35 overs

For the second over in a row, Rachin Ravindra takes two boundaries off Josh Tongue.

And once again, it's a tidy one followed by a bit of a hack.

A lovely drive through mid-off brings up New Zealand's hundred, before a hurried pull goes aerial and crosses the boundary at fine leg.

    Sir Alastair Cook

I've been impressed with England, it's a good contest between bat and ball and they've made New Zealand work really hard for their runs.

PitchViz today so far is 6.4/10 - unsurprisngly, that is easier for batting than on any day at Lord's in the first Test.

  20. NZ 98-3published at 34 overs

A first change for England as Sonny Baker comes on to replace Matthew Fisher - he had figures of 0-12 from five overs in the morning session.

He starts with four dot balls to Daryl Mitchell, before the New Zealand batters take a couple of singles to close the over.
