There's a bit of anxiety coming into Jacob Bethell's play.

A tight single for Jacob Bethell to mid-off is followed by some good fielding by Shivam Dube and a direct hit at the striker's end.

The England opener looks to have made his ground but the umpires want to take a look.

This is what experience is. Ben Duckett just taking on Gurnoor Brar who's only playing in his fourth ODI and his first ever game in England.

    Eng 37-0published at 8 overs

Gurnoor Brar shows a bit of a firey side as he shies at the stumps at the striker's end after Ben Duckett dabs one in front and is marginally out of his ground.

A couple of balls later and Brar bangs it in short, but Duckett is able to pull it for six behind square.

It's a bit top-edgey from Duckett but it sailed over the boundary and into the stands.

This is really good batting from Duckett. Even though he does play this shot very often, he just preempted the length that was going to be bowled.

It's about putting the newcomer under pressure.

Jamie @11:31... Because, unlike in Tests, they want to bat for 50 overs...

Gurnoor Brar replaces Prasidh Krishna and his second delivery is rather more confidently smeared through the covers for four.

A couple of balls later and Duckett skips across to off stump and lap scoops the India seamer for six over the wicketkeeper's head.

The number of plays and misses so far has been 13 out of 42 deliveries, which is 30%. The average for England over the last 15 years has been 20%.

I'm not quite sure that's the case, Jamie. Been a fair few wafts of the willow.

Ben Duckett nearly chops on against Jasprit Bumrah off the final ball of the over. England will be hoping when the ball stops swinging they will be able to make hay.

I don't think is a 400+ score day at Edgbaston.

Can anyone tell me why Baz McCullum's ODI side are batting more cautiously than Baz McCullum's Test sides did?

Ben Duckett gets one closer to the body from Jasprit Burmah and manages to nudge into the leg side for a couple.

Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett are getting a bit edgy now. Anything full and wide, they are absolutely throwing their hands at now.

Sometimes you've just got to take your hat off.

Unlike the T20 side that lost badly to England recently, India have made a few changes and look strong. Jasprit Bumrah will be a challenge on any deck. Thus it will be a more even contest in this ODI series.

Ben Duckett gets the physio on to take a look at his fingers between overs having been wrapped by on the gloves by Jasprit Bumrah.

The England opener has yet another waft at one back of a length which shows good carry through to the wicketkeeper.

Jacob Bethell then does likewise off the penultimate delivery of the over.

A bit of movement through the air for Krishna.

Testing spell for England's opening pair here. A nick feels...inevitable. Hope I'm wrong.

England's powerplay batting has been a key area of concern in recent ODIs - they've lost two or more powerplay wickets in 10 of their 18 ODIs played since the start of 2025 and have gone on to lose in nine of these 10 occurrences.

England's record by powerplay wickets lost in ODIs since the start of 2025:

    • 1 or 0 lost - 5 wins, 3 losses
    • 2 or more lost - 1 win, 9 losses
  16. Eng 16-0published at 5 overs

This really is top-class seam bowling from Jasprit Bumrah.

Final ball of the his third over he draws a rather airy waft from Ben Duckett.

Bumrah and KL Rahul think the England opener might have got a bit of bat on it before calming themselves.

Just a single off the over.

Jacob Bethell scored his first run of his 13th ball. That's the longest it's taken an England opener to get off the mark since August 2012 when Alastair Cook scored his first run off his 18th ball.

  18. Eng 15-0published at 4 overs

Ben Duckett elegantly flicks Prasidh Krishna's final ball of the over square for four. Nicely played.

    I take your point, Mike.

Jacob Bethell, of course, has played relatively little 50-over cricket full stop.

Can someone explain to me why Jacob Bethell is opening in an ODI when we have a quality short format opening batsman in Will Jacks batting at 7 - I don't get it.

Prasidh Krishna takes a leaf out of Jasprit Bumrah's book and goes round the wicket to Jacob Bethell.

He draws the England opener into defending thin air with a teasing delivery back of a length.

Bethell gets himself off the mark with a risky dab to short mid-on but makes his ground.
