    Target: 220

There's no let-up for Dhananjaya de Silva, who dives to his right at slip to stop a reverse sweep from Harry Brook going to the rope.

I'm old enough to remember when that shot was a rarity, and Ian Botham was once told to stop playing it after getting out in an ODI, but Root and Brook unfurl it with aplomb.

Lovely stuff from Harry Brook off the first ball from Dhananjaya de Silva, advancing down the pitch to drive the ball to the boundary past cover.

The England captain is playing patiently - he's far from a run a ball, unlike Joe Root - and he takes a single from the final delivery to stay on strike.

These are moments that can change games. These deliveries are the ones that as a bowler with the game going away from you, you just have to find the edge.

  4. Eng 141-3published at 31 overs

Spot on, Kevin - it isn't easy, and to prove that Jeffrey Vandersay rips two successive deliveries past Harry Brook's outside edge to keep the England captain honest.

I don’t for one minute think this is easy; but England in Root and Brook have this chase well measured and I hope they keep their head and as Brook said at the toss, play the conditions.

  6. Eng 140-3published at 30 overs

This is a decent Sri Lanka attack in these conditions, but perhaps there isn't anyone that poses a real threat especially to a pair as set as these two.

Dhananjaya de Silva is back into the attack, and he is dibbed and dabbed all around the wicket for five runs that Harry Brook and Joe Root don't break sweat for.

  7. Eng 135-3published at 29 overs

    Target: 220

Harry Brook moves around the crease to work Asalanka from outside off towards the square leg boundary, then Joe Root drops to his knee to essay a safe-as-houses sweep shot.

    Four from the over.

  8. Eng 131-3published at 28 overs

    Target: 220

England are strolling at the moment, there's no need for anything frantic and Jeffrey Vandersay's latest over is worked around easily for seven runs.

  9. Eng 124-3published at 27 overs

Such are Joe Root's high standards that despite sailing past 50, he looks irked when he cannot get Charith Asalanka away but he makes amends with a smooth drive past midwicket to nick the strike off the final delivery.

  10. Eng 121-3published at 26 overs

Harry Brook caresses Wellalage's final delivery to the boundary between point and third with the deftest of touches.

Seven odd the over as England get to below 100 of their target.

  11. 50 runs

50 to Joe Rootpublished at 14:40 GMT 24 January

Joe Root nudges a single from Dunith Wellalage into the covers for his 45th half-century in 50-over games, from 52 deliveries.

It's not looked in doubt since he arrived at the crease.

  12. Eng 114-3published at 25 overs

Charith Asalanka goes for just two as we reach the halfway stage.

England are ahead of the asking rate, but Sri Lanka have dragged it back a touch since the fall of Jacob Bethell.

  13. Eng 112-3published at 24 overs

Dunith Wellalage is improving, nearly forcing Harry Brook into an under-edge onto his stumps but the skipper is relieved to see the ball rebound off his pads and not the timbers.

He runs a single off the final delivery to pinch the strike, just like his illustrious Yorkshire predecessor Sir Geoffrey Boycott often did.

Joe Root reverse-sweeps the second for four, it's not his most elegant effort but it has enough on it to elude slip and slide to the rope at third.

The bowler responds well at the end of the over, turning one past Root's outside edge with a lovely leg break.

  15. Eng 104-3published at 22 overs

    Thank you, Timothy!

Dunith Wellalage keeps it tight, Harry Brook and Joe Root can only eke two from the left-armer's fourth over.

No sign of that thundery stuff that we saw at the interval.

England still in a good position here but with plenty of time left in the game. Will they get there?

Here's Tim Oscroft to see you through the remainder of the match.

  17. Eng 102-3published at 21 overs

Joe Root content to defend the first three balls of Jeffrey Vandersay's over before he competently sweeps it for a single through mid-wicket.

Harry Brook with a block and then a punch which is well fielded by Vandersay to deny him the chance to get on strike.

  18. Eng 101-3published at 20 overs

England white-ball skipper Harry Brook joins Joe Root, who is 40 not out off 35 balls, at the crease.

A beautiful bit of bowling from Dhananjaya de Silva. Disappointment from Jacob Bethell, he just needed to wait for the ball to come to him. He was eager to score, eager to hit the ball down the ground.

Tossed up by Dhananjaya de Silva and Jacob Bethell is snared.

The England batter cannot resist as a delivery from the Sri Lanka skipper which hangs in the air and bounces into the footmarks before he throws the bat at it.

However, the ball sticks in the pitch and Bethell ends up chipping it into the hands of Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka at cover.
